If you are heading west on I-90, as you near Big Timber, you will swear you will run into them. They are directly in front of you.

I took the picture from the exit to Big Timber. It is about 80 miles west of Billings.

There are also many nice views of the Beartooth Mtns. on your left from about Billings on!

I actually sent that picture to the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission. They said that is was a run in with a big cat. Tough old doe, I'd say.
That picture was in the early fall of 2014.

Congrats on the Canon.

Good job and like the pup. Depth of field is a bitch (pun intended) though, and Cookie struggles with such mostly on her deer images. Eyes are great, but nose and antlers are a little blurry. Mostly a big lens and low light issue that's hard to overcome.

I assume spring in the air there? Have some swans and snow geese showing up, but not great numbers yet.
Posted By: duckster Re: Some photos for 2021 - 03/09/21
Yes, migration is in full swing. Lots of Canada geese, snow geese and sandhill cranes.

The shallow DOF is fun to play with but I usually shoot at wider apertures for sports and wildlife. If it gets dark and you need to be wide open it can get hard to get everything in focus. New camera seems to handle the higher ISO much better.

We have been trying to take one day a week to drive out in the country on roads not yet travelled. Looking at older buildings - Abandoned Alberta (FB site) as we both have ties back to farming and a person needs a break from the lockdowns. The majority of sites are from the late 1890's to early 1900's. Very distinctive changes in the building types in areas settled by Eastern Europeans vs those settled by Scandinavians at approximately the same period. Here are a few recent shots from this year.

Up here large older farms when sold off many times the older buildings are pushed up into burn piles. The connection to that piece of land is just not there with the new owners. Hopefully over time some can be saved.

I find the workmanship on these old structures incredible to think on for how they made, tools used, design, where the materials (logs) came from. Squares, strings, levels, hand saws, axes -- no power tools.

Some of these homes (grey 2 story below) are in aspen only areas so the logs were hauled in from quite a distance. Buildings at times started small based on what the man / men could build for that season (2nd picture) and then larger homes were built over time in new and better locations. I know where there is a very remote home built from field stone and will try to get back in there this summer. It was built and abandoned in a period of time less than 10 years. Very harsh conditions back then to make a living and raise a family. Injuries or illness --- who knows but the site was walked away from. Very good workmanship on the home so obviously a person that knew stone work.

All pictures are from roads and some at quite a distance as we do not tresspass.

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com] [Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

This one has an interesting history as it was converted to a 2 story pig barn at some point in its past. The animal chute to the 2nd level is evident, same for the added wall vents and the larger central exhaust duct.

HughW: Great pics and thanks for capturing such treasures. We have a few such places in eastern Oregon, and yes, some of serious substance were built and abandoned within a decade. Seem to see more in the Palouse Prairie region often out in the middle of wheat fields. Likely substantially more folks around when they were trying to scratch out a living on a paltry 160 acre claim. Good scale for eastern bottomland with 30+ inches of precip and a perennial stream. Not so much out west with 12 inches of winter precip and no surface water.

I use Smugmug and then can pick the size of the embedded photo.
Posted By: 1minute Re: Some photos for 2021 - 07/07/21
We use Photoshop, Paint, Topaz, or our Canon digital camera software to downsize originals and convert the files to jpg formats. Makes uploading to the various server sites a much quicker deal as well. If one thinks of a digital image as a spread sheet with each block filled with color and intensity data for each pixel, today's huge images are a boatload of data. Cookie's images that I post here are about 90% smaller than her original Canon raw files coming up at about 1040 x 655.

The images I upload to Postimage are typically at a 1920 x 1200 resolution as that's the pixel count for my computer screen. Most PC screens have about 72 pixels per linear inch, and images exceeding that resolution are watered down to fit the display anyway. The CampFire software resizes those images further, probably to speed up data flow.

High resolution images mostly come into their own when being printed given that todays machines can handle 600+ pixels per linear inch.

Being old, I can recall early Windows days when an 800 X 640 image would take 5 minutes to render. We've come a long way.
Posted By: duckster Re: Some photos for 2021 - 07/08/21
I will sometimes do RAW but mostly JPEG and generally very little on the post-processing side of things. No patience for learning all the new skills, I guess.

Dingo that is one cool old piece of equipment. Any idea what that flywheel used to drive?

This will give you an idea..................................

Apart from threshing work, portable engines were used to drive corn-mills, centrifugal pumps, stone-crushers, dynamos, chaff-cutters, hay-balers and saw benches. They were even used to generate electricity for floodlighting at football matches, the first instance being at Bramall Lane, Sheffield in 1878.[5]

In general, the portable engine is hauled to the work area, often a farmyard or field, and a long drive belt is fitted between the engine's flywheel and the driving wheel of the equipment to be powered.

In a number of cases, rather than being towed from site-to-site, the portable engine was semi-permanently installed in a building as a stationary steam engine, although the wheels were not necessarily removed. In this configuration, they are generally called Semi-portable engines.

A more extreme use occurs where the engine is removed from the boiler and is re-used as a stationary engine. Often, the boiler is also re-used (without its wheels) to provide the steam. As of 2007, there are still examples of such dismantled portable engines working commercially in small rice mills in Burma[6] (and, no doubt, elsewhere too). Such examples are easy to identify due to the curved saddle, below the cylinder block, that was used to mount the engine to the boiler. Thousands of 1 horsepower portable engines were built in China, during the Great Leap Forward of 1958. Every village and peasant was encouraged to build a small iron smelter and produce pig iron. To power the blowers to sustain the retort temperatures, small straw burning engines were built. It was all to no effect as the end pig iron was of very poor quality for any use.

Just put a bunch of Cookie's recent images up in the Hunter's Campfire realm. They seem to get a few more looks up there. Have a good one.

Thanks RIO7, she's a GSP from Chris Riddle at 6R Kennels outside of Des Moines. My coworker has a GSP from there and said he was the best bird dog he'd ever owned so I made a few trips out to check out the kennel/dogs and pulled the trigger.

Thanks for sharing !!!
Took a photography class in college, we only shot B&W and learned how to develop, etc.
This thread makes me really wish I'd stuck with it. Not sure why I didn't as I sure did enjoy it.
Probably had something to do with whiskey, weed and girls. ha

Thanks again for sharing! Awesome shots!

Just a pic of a couple of pieces of old farm equipment.

The old man and his tractor.

The tractor survived a barn fire couple of years ago.

'...it works fine, why do I need another one...'

He was fixing fence this past Monday................ he's 93...............
