Spent some time in Grand Teton National Park recently and did some "hunting" with my camera. Yes, I was at a safe distance, using a telephoto lens:

Good sized black bear after the berries. He appeared to stand taller than my 6' - though I didn't go stand next to him and compare.

I'd been shooting photos of this mama moose and her calf when they went on high alert - in this photo - and were focused on the bear pictured above:

Bull moose on the move:

Buffalo, feeding and moving in my direction. I moved.

cool pics. thanks

Nice variety of critters. I was able to go to the Tetons a few years ago and actually enjoyed photographing the moose and elk more than the landscapes.

Nice job there, and a good mix as well.

Cookie was hoping for some bear on her last outing, but her chosen local was low on berries/cherries. None to be found.

Thanks all! I've been sticking closer to home here in Central Washington. Have a few more photos to add though:

Poor quality because it was taken well before sunrise, but I thought the elk hunters here would appreciate this. Yes, easily within normal rifle range.

Poor quality? Your your own worst critic. Truth is you got the shot! I like it too!

Thanks! I have to admit that I was imagining crosshairs on the shoulder of each of those bulls... smile

That's a tough tag to draw. If I ever do draw it, I know where to find this bachelor group!

And I've been looking for this fellow this fall, unsuccessfully:

GWB - saw a buck kinda like that once in Wyoming. I could not get a shot at him, or he'd be on the wall. Cool photo. Thanks for sharing!

Some really nice photos there.

OP said he used a telephoto lens. How long a lense did you use? I have a 170-500 but don't do well with handheld shots. I have a good tripod but takes time to set it up.
Posted By: 1minute Re: Big Game Photos - 12/26/23
DonFischer: Not the OP, but once in a blue moon Cookie will let me pick up one of her units. I can hand hold her Canon 500 prime which is a relatively long and heavy unit. Right hand on the camera and left at the extreme end of the lens hood. She has a couple 100-400 Canon zooms that are shorter and considerably lighter. I have to find some sort of support (tree limb, rock, or sit down) to keep those stable. Admittedly, a tripod is a pain in the ass when one is wandering the sticks with a camera. If wildlife would behave like fruit baskets, we'd have an easier time.

Given the slant of this forum, I see the same effects with firearms. I have a 15 lb 45-90 Sharps that works well off hand. With a shorter/lighter 600 Rem in 6-mm I can't do crap without a rest.

Enjoy your stuff. Good luck in the coming year.

Please bear in mind that the following is from a "hack" photographer and not a pro.

The two telephoto lenses I use are a Canon 70-200 and a Tamron 150-600.

typically I use the Tamron 150-600 Telephoto at distance over the Canon and do not crop.

I have both a Canon 7D Mk2 and a Canon 5d Mk4.

In those above it was the 1.6 Crop sensor 7D Mk2 as it extends the range and I can get 10 FPS.

I was riding in the elevated bench seats mounted in the bed of a pick-up. Those were unsupported or I was braced against an arm rest or bed rail, and cherry-picked as there were numerous images that were not up to par.

I typically do not do post-photo processing as most of my pix are for myself, but did so in the pix above and below using "Raw Power" App.

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

Canon 5D MK 2, Tamron 150-600 f/5-6.3 Di VC USD lens, F/10, 1/800 sec , ISO 800, 500 MM.

Considering a 1.6 Crop factor that should be the equivalent of an 800 MM lens, if I understand correctly.

Best,

GWB

Great photos! I am a rank amateur but, I need to take my camera out and work on getting some shots.

Yes. Get it out and hit the shutter. Once in a while one captures a gem.

Nice shot! Need to know, what mm lens are you using?

The best chances I've had at mountain sheep I was driving and didn't have a camera ready. Colorado, Arizona, Oregon and Alaska. Best was in Alaska where the Haul Rd cross's over the summit of the Brooks Range going down to the Tundra. Driving a hwy. truck to Prudhoe Bay and no camera with me! Wised up and started carrying a camera in the vehicle and never got those opportunity's again!
