I'm looking to start doing photography a little beyond the cell phone or pocket instant camera stuff. Prices on what I want, new, are about double what I'm comfortable spending right now.

There are affordable deals on new stuff that would get me started (APS-C with non IS 75-300 lens)...
Would I be better off buying used with more and better capabilities?

Craigslist is a bust for camera stuff, locally.

I have gotten most all of my cameras and lenses from MPB , KEH, Adorama, and B&H plus a few more that I can't remember. There are some more places to get good used equipment but the ones I posted are the most popular and trustworthy.
I belong to a couple camera forums, and the above businesses are spoken very highly of!
Check the Ugly Hedgehog forum it is extremely busy and very informative and these members are very good at what they do. The bird and wildlife pics are mostly all pro quality.
I am not one of them by the way.

I haven't tried buying camera gear on Facebook. But i have bought lots of other stuff. Sometimes people just want out and don't care about price. If you don't use FB ask your kids nephews to look for you.

I think the only issue I would have with B&H (and the same may be true about Adorama) is they do not designate between US or non-US (grey market) when it comes to used lenses. that used to be the case anway. If you find a deal on a lens and it is grey market, you probably will not be able to send it in to the USA operations of the manufacturer for repair.

The D7200 and 18-140 has been a great camera. The D7000 is as well.
