Thought I'd share some pictures with everyone of our weekend trip to the Oregon coast.
Newport bay marina and bridge. This is the area where Keiko the killer whale lived for several years.

The tuna fishing charter boat had just come in, looks like they did pretty well.
My boy and our friends daughter. There's not much better then getting "shanghaied" by a couple kids.

We caught 16 Dungenous crab and cooked 'em-up. Ate until we almost popped.
Found this guy in a slough. Hard to see in the picture but he's got a fish in his beak.

Spike,

Thanks for the pictures.

One of my favorite pastime's is walking the docks with my youngin', looking at boats. (I've got my heart set on getting a bigger one [Linked Image]) That first one in your picture looks nice. The wife insists any boat we get has a flying bridge.

The first time I had to cook the crab at a hunting camp, it was just me and one other guy who had not done it before either. All the self-appointed 'experts' were out pulling the pots again. Anyhow, when the returned, it was quickly and clearly pointed out to us by the head 'expert' that the crab were never to boiled in the water. They had to be 'steamed', by keeping the crab suspended in a basket, or even placing rocks in the bottom of the pot to keep the crab out of the water.

Just thought I'd share my experience, I wonder if anyone else has heard likewise? BTW, I'm not suggesting you were doing it wrong, as I've had crab like that before, and it tasted just fine.

Those guys let us off easy about the 'boiling rather than steaming' thing. But when the found out we used fresh water, and not salt water, they about hit the roof! [Linked Image]

Say, did you use Old Bay seasoning? Good stuff!

I too appreciate all the pictures you all post, I was taught to boil crabs too, and always in saltwater. Until BW mentioned it, I had never heard of steaming them.
