i have been long range shooting for a few years now and have taken some great shots and killed many different animals at 500 plus yards. I have had several rifles built up and have a couple that shoot better than others. Out of my best shooter i consistantly get 3/4/-1 inch groups at 300 yards and around 1.5-2 inch at 500 3-4.5 at 700, just curious how other rifles you guys have shoot at longer range. Meaning 3-5 shot grouping.

Depends on the day, and me. Most important is me. My rifles and ammo are up to it..and you`re talking a minute or less at those yardages. I`m not to interested in multiple shots, more where my first shot impacts. And that depends on me, and how I call conditions.
Posted By: RIO7 Re: long range hunting rifles - 09/09/21

Forthyfour, If your talking long range groups I can show you pic's all day long as can many others here, shooting critters at long range is up to the shooter and what's happening that day. what ever they choose to do at any range is on them.

6 Creed?
Posted By: RIO7 Re: long range hunting rifles - 09/10/21

David Walter, 6 creed? NO, 1000 yard 3 shot group is a .243 1x8 twist 24" barrel and a 107 gr smk.

The other 2 targets 1200 yrds and 1 mile targets. are with a GAP 6.5 PRC and 147 ELD-M Rio7
My 1,000 meter shooting is normally ten rounds, been playing lately with a 244AI which is a really cool cartridge, but II have had a 6.5 Creedmoor barrel on the same rifle that works very well too.
Even the little 6mmBR will put ten into a 1MOA group with no problem.
Most of the guys at my club that are running long range rifles have them braked and are shooting stuff like 7mm RUM, 300 RUM, 338 Lapua, etc.
These guys are shooting some crazy groups with these rifles, bur their first round hits are at times phenomenal .
watched one fella last week round first round hits from 600 to 1,000 with a Cadex 300 mag that were all absolute kill shots.

I can hit a deer a 629 yards with a 7mmRM 140 gr or 6.5-06 120 gr.
I have made those two hail Mary shots with no wind.

I can miss a deer at 400 yards with a 270 130 gr with 15 mph cross wind.... but the second shot hit the heart.
Best NOT to infer Rio7’s groups as representative.
They are superlative.
If your can get .3 MOA you’re doing as well as any LR guy could hope for.

What powder do you like in that 243 with the 107?
Posted By: RIO7 Re: long range hunting rifles - 10/01/21

JPro, Retumbo, it works, very well with no pressure signs in my rifle, start small and work up, to be safe. Rio7

This^^^^. WOW 😳
Rio curious on the scope your using?
Posted By: Drpguy Re: long range hunting rifles - 10/02/21
you should go to a couple of the matches at rio salado. 500 yards 66 shots. they are fun. educational. usually the third saturday
Posted By: Drpguy Re: long range hunting rifles - 10/02/21
I dont normally shoot groups at LR... Just shoot kill sized rocks to make sure my turrets on and that the deer would be dead....

I shot thie group at 510 prone, bipod, no rear rest with my sporter weight 257 wby and 100 TTSX. Not a true long range rig, but it does shoot well and I am comfortable to 600+, altought I missed a 100-105" buck at 672 last year! (damnit!)

Davies,

I have heard of the Rio Salado Shoots, but I shoot long range for the Hell of it, not to compete. Rio7

How many shots do you fire before letting your barrel (chamber) cool?

Multiple shots tell you how competent you are and how precise your rifle is. It also tells you how good you are at reading wind. Of course first shot is always the most important thing to consider, but when practicing, you should be shooting multiple shots, even if you are practicing at closer distances. Never a bad thing to fine tune your skill...and trust me, if you are taking a shot on a big game animal, you owe it to them to take them cleanly. Practice is how you do that.
I may have to break into my stash of 107 SMK for long range plinking with my 243 AI.
Posted By: CGPAUL Re: long range hunting rifles - 11/05/21
BSA...I`ve shot enough shots over the years in HP to know how competent I am at 6, 8,9,and 1k....but never had the opportunity to shoot a 20 shot string at a game animal. I`m also experienced enough to know when to shoot, and when not. That comes from all those 20 shot strings I mentioned.
I have been able to shoot groups 3-3.5" at 1K for three shots with my lone dedicated long range rig. Conditions were perfect and this was shooting off a bipod using a rear bag. This past Saturday , I shot a whitetail buck at 705 yds. Weather was warm and no breeze to mention. I had no doubt about the out come at the shot. Just squeeze the trigger and down he went.

This thread makes me want to go out and get a decent 243 that I can work on/with for long range.
Posted By: pete53 Re: long range hunting rifles - 03/05/22
i have few long range rifles but my 338 Lapua i built with a Brux barrel is my favorite for very long range hunting rifle on game animals ,its very accurate 1/2 inch and under 5 shot group at 100 yards ported and easy to hold , with a soft recoil but with a 8 -32 x 56 NIghtforce scope and a boot with 8 cartridges it weighs 14 lbs. 225 Nosler bullets shoot 2850 FPS and is so accurate at that speed and fun too shoot but 90 -100 grains of powder a 1- lb. can of powder don`t last long.

That's incredible. One of my early full custom rifles is a 243 win on a trued 700 with an 8 twist 26" brux. It's always shot pretty well with 105 amaxes or 105 vld hunting bullets over a case full of h1000. I hadn't shot it for several years but took it to the range last year to sight in a new bushy dmrII 3.5-21 scope. I got it on paper and then shot a few groups under 1/2 moa and called it good.

Seeing what yours does makes me want to try some 107 smks and do a bit more load work up. I've shot some decent groups with it but nothing like your doing. Impressive work with a 243. I have a bunch of a good lot of Norma brass I bought a dozen or more years ago. What brass do you use?

Burleyboy, Mostly range pick up Hornady or Winchester, I have found brass does not make much difference. YMMV Rio7

Some may know......been busting p/dogs for 20+ years...

Main set ups have been Savage s/shot actions using custom ordered/built Pac Nor barrels

Calibers ?

223AI...20 Vartarg...20 Practical...20-222...204R...6 BR..6 XC...260 AI...6.5x55......even a 300 Win (briefly)

20's are where its at for p/dogs....3900 fps with a 40 V max...fuggin laser

Winding down now in my later years....have a 222 Mag to break in this spring

These all set up break the scales at 18# when on the portable table...less recoil......(:

When you 'dust dogs' @ 600 you know your loads & rifle set is working

Crazy...600 yds...shoot..watch the dog do a 180...feel the pat of the recoil...

this pic.......targets start at 485 yds....223 AI...53 V Max

Longest kill ? You wouldn't believe me....260 AI w.142 SMK's

The 6GT has been running near the top for awhile now. Creation of George Gardner (GA Precision) and Tom Jacobs (Vapor Trail Bullets).

It’s a slick setup for PRS. I’m not sure about having one as ownership requires a sticker of a rainbow tiger on the stock.

Seekins just put out a factory chambering in their HIT rifle

Those 53's have been working great for me for quite a while in 223's and now my 22-250's. I guess they don't shoot well for some guys though. Glad to see someone else using them with good success..

I had a stock Tikka T3 6.5 swede that shot almost identical to what you have described. Recently I screwed the barrel off and added a 6.5 creedmoor CTR barrel, KRG Bravo Chassis, Bushnell DMR3 Scope, Area 419 Muzzle Brake, Area 419 20moa Rail, Vortex Rings, Mountain Performance Bolt, Shroud, Trigger Spring, Bolt Stop and KRG Accurate Mags with the 2.095 coal. First trip out we found 2 loads with RL23 that put 5 bullets touching but still not what I'm looking for. Will play with 23 some more and suspect it will dial in nicely but going to do a load with NV555 also and than pick the best of the two when I'm done. Only 26 140 eldms I have down the tube but having some fun. I want close to 100 down the tube before I stretch it out to 500 yds. If I can get repeatable 1" groups at 500 I'll be happy. This stuff is no doubt a ton of fun!!! I have 2000 140 eldms along with 3000 CCI 450 primers and 200 pieces of Lapua small primer brass just waiting to play

I have a M98 with a $100 "Finnish sniper barrel" in 30-06 purchased from Sportsman's Guide. It's heavy contour (rifle weighs about 11 lbs), 27 inches long with what looks like a (flash-hider cut? ) inch long smaller diameter OD right at the muzzle. It came already parkerized too. Standard Leupold VXIII 3.5 to 10 scope.

I've not hand-loaded for it, but it puts 3 into an inch at 300 yards, 150's, or 180's, any factory brand I've tried. Different POI of course, between bullet weights and brands. I've not even bothered with 5 shot groups or other ranges, other than initial sight in at 100 yards. I killed a caribou with it at 370 yards (150 factory Corelokt) with the 11th round I put through it.

I'd be a" long range hunter" with it maybe if I wasn't only a 500 yard shooter, but then, I am a semi- adequate stalker. ...... smile

While I can't find 260 or 243 ammo at LGS locally, they have always had a good supply of 6 Creed through the shortage. Probably because no one has one up here.

. Yeah, I know- you want to load your own... smile

15 rounds from 1000 yds. The diameter of the bolt holding the plate on is 3/4".
I built an 8-twist 6XC and it shoots awesome. The downside to 243 is you are pretty limited on cartridge length if you want it to feed from a magazine. 6XC was designed to solve this problem, among others. I still think its the best designed 6mm, as far as maximizing velocity and minimizing downsides.

Lets hear the longest kill, I will believe. Mine is 960 yds on a p-dog in 12mph wind. However, I can't say its confirmed kill as I knocked him down, but he made it back down the hole. But hell I'm counting it!
