Was down at Wally World picking up Seafire Jr some stuff...and saw the New Shooting Times on the shelf... Don't spend money on those rags anymore.. but they do occasionally have something that catches my eye..

on the cover is a New Savage Model..the 111 Long Range Hunter..
Black Synthetic Stock, Adjustable cheek piece ( I didn't care for that), Large Bolt Handle, Removable Muzzle Brake.. Blued Steel...

Price is MSRP of $664.00.. so it should be available in the $500 to $525.00 range...

Although it is available in several long range calibers, chosen for the article by Lain Simpson, was the 6.5 x 284.. with a 24 inch barrel and a one in 8 twist...

anyway, I thought this was a pretty cool offering by Savage...
especially considering the features, vs the wallet friendly price...

the 6.5 x 284 is still mated to a long action.. which means that a bullet can be seated really far out there...lets hope that they don't put a spacer in there...if short chambered, the throat can be tweaked out by a gunsmith...

a big thumbs up for Savage...as I think they have another winner on their hands... a company listing to what customers actually want...

I too agree that Savage is doing a great job making guns that shooters want, I just can't get passed things like the oversized bolt handle and overall fit and finish. Looking forward to checking out the accustock though. Looks like a great idea.

Yea it has the silly azz new barrel nut on it too......gotta buy a new style nut wrench.....or take it off with a pipe wrench and replace it with old style nut...I'm sure it will shoot though...I'm betting the 260 Rem would sell better..

Those of us here know that the 260 would be awesome, but the average reader of ST has read articles by simpson on the 6.5-284. They know it is faster and flatter at 1000 yds because it is used for comps and is all the long range rage.

I would love to fondle one of these before I buy a barrel in 260 for my 22-250. Hard to break up an accurate rifle.

I skimmed the article at wally world. This will be offered in other calibers, but wasn't specific. Also the Karsten cheek piece will not have the knobs on the production version so the knobs won't hang up in the brush.

Seriously that is what it said. Long Range Hunter that, according to the article, was designed for texas sendero type hunting from an elevated stand is having the knobs removed so they won't hang up in the brush. I'm not getting this decision but then I didn't go to school for marketing.

My sons one year old LH Savage 110 in 30-06 puts three rounds of factory Federal ammo into holes that are touching each other at 100 yards. Nothing else in the house does that with factory ammo except my Savage Model 10 scout rifle.

Although I shoot/hunt with many different rifles and cartridges....Nothing can outshoot my (2) Savage rifles and therefore I keep them...

I'll definitely look into this new offering as well...because Savages just plain shoot

No way around it, Savage makes very accurate rifles

Even the "standard" havy barreled .223 is pretty accurate for a factory job. Mine is not benchrest accuate, but for a test I fired ten shots at 200 yards. The group measued .870". The only thing done to the rifle was a trigger job. By the way, the scope is a Tasco 6-24X. Sopunds like a bird: Cheap, cheap, cheap.

Savage bolt handles are VERY easy to switch out so if that is an issue for you it is an easy one to address:

+1 my small bore favourite is the 6.5x284. Straight out the box first day shooting pop cans at 460yds. 30 inch SS Acutrigger 12F First firings on Lapua brass shooting 142 Sierras. Groups are even better after neck sizing only. This thing can go 1000 yds. Shooting at half mile can hit 5 gal pail size target. Really a shooter but spent more time with the bigger boomers this summer.

Has anyone found out when this new savage model 111 long range hunter.is going to be out to the public and what other calibers that they will make?????

Can't answer on the calibers but rumor I've heard (and saw repeated on another 'fire thread) was January availability.

The recent production 110 FP I saw & worked on had no hex bolt to remove to replace the bolt handle...its the same rifle I used a pipe wrench to remove the smooth barrel nut...then replaced it with an old style nut..and a new Pac Nor 6.5x284 tube.....I wasn't going to purchase a new $50 nut wrench to remove a $15 bbl nut..

Id hope that the 6.5x284 comes with a couple extra barrels, lol!!!
