Posted By: Billyc6231 Sub - Moa 6.5x284 info - 09/29/11
I have a 6.5x284 with a Hart 30" barrel.

I have been following the advice and suggestions of different combinations - h4350, h4831, Fed gm210m, cci BR-2, etc..

The gun shoots respectable - 3/4" at 100 yd - just not really good..

Any suggestions on a drop dead great accurate load..??

Would like to shoot a 140 gr bullet that could execute good killing power at 600 yards +++..

H-1000 and a Berger 140 may do the trick.

Each gun is its own entity. I recently found that my 6.5 really liked 140 Amax bullets. I pushed them with Mag Pro and R17. I have a 25" barrel so I was using the 'modern' powders to get the velocity I wanted. You are not so handicapped with that 30" barrel.

I am using Wolf or BR2 primers, Lapua brass and weighing charges.

That said, I am sticking with 130s to get the velocity I want.

what twist? i have shot 139 scenar and 123 scenar and 120 baltip. mrp-2 , mrp and h4350.

IF YOU GO 6mmbr.com there is a bunch on the 6.5-284
Posted By: dennisinaz Re: Sub - Moa 6.5x284 info - 10/06/11
Yes, but it is all with ancient powders for shooting targets with no consideration to velocity. If you really want to make a 6.5-284 shine, you have to dispense with the standby powders like 4350 and 4831.

You can really wake it up with Mag Pro, R17 and Magnum. If you want ho-hum velocity and loads for 1000 yd BR, go ahead and use H4350.

Just saying...

I like the ability to get 3000 fps with a 25" barrel and I can't do that with 4350.

With your longer barrel, you probably can though.

How straight are your cartridges?

Are you a 1/2" or less shooter with other rifles?
Posted By: Cocadori Re: Sub - Moa 6.5x284 info - 10/31/11
what mathman said.

have you checked bullet runout?
How anal are you when you reload your cartridges?

I shot the 6.5X284 in 1k BR for a bit. I was getting aggs of 8" with RL 22 and the 139 scenar. I also had great results with the 140 gr berger over RL 22

Someone else's magic load may not be yours though.

I'm shooting 140 Accubonds with my Sako A7 with a Hart barrel. I'm using H414 and it shoots very well. 1/2 at 100.
Posted By: dennisinaz Re: Sub - Moa 6.5x284 info - 11/01/11
WOW, H414.

I used to use that but it is too unstable for my AZ hunting uses.

I mostly used VV N160 when I shot 1000 yd BR. I don't use V V powders anymore though. I need to try H100V or whatever it is called. Have heard some good things about it.

I have built many 6.5x284's. All have 8 twist barrels around 26 inches. Most all that I have built including mine that is strictly for 1000yd, shoot half moa or less. Most all are using H4831 CCI BR primers and about 50-52 grains with Berger 140's. I shoot 51.5 with velocity around 2950fps.The reamer I use is a Norma Match from PTG. It has a .188 freebore. The ones I worked up loads for did not shine until near max pressure. This load is not maxed out in my rifle.

Billy,

I have a hunting weight 6.5-284 with a 26" med. wt. Krieger sporter on a blueprinted pre-64 M-70 action with Borden's bumps in a Boyds, Jon Sundra laminated sporter stock, pillared, glassed, torqued and freefloated. It wears a Swaro Z5 3.5-18x44 BT with Outdoorsmans turret and has a Jewell trigger.

Best hunting load is 140 gr. SST's at 2,950 fps using Vv N165 powder. On a bench, it will shoot 4 1/2" at 600 yds. with progressively smaller groups back to teens and twos at 100 yds. I can get 3,000 fps, easily with RL-17, but the N165 loads are slightly more accurate with low S.D.'s. With 50 gr. RL-17, it will go to 3,100 fps, but groups open up to 1 1/2" at a hundred. With the Swaro turret, I need accuracy a lot more than an extra few fps., so I stick with N165.

I killed an antelope in NM this past August, one shot in the chest, DRT at 200 yds. I killed a 300# boar hog in Louisiana, last year, one shot behind the ear at 225 yds. Bullet was in and out, hog was DRT. I like the accuracy of 140 gr. SST's, and at 2,950 fps, they perform perfectly.

That is good velocity with R17, I get just under 3200 with 50.5 grains with 130s. I would lock my bolt up with 50 grains behind a 140!! I am getting just under .5 MOA with the R17 load which is plenty good for a hunting rifle and those 130s really sing!
Posted By: Dirtfarmer Re: Sub - Moa 6.5x284 info - 11/04/11
With RL-17, 3,000 fps was pretty comfortable and it would shoot 1/2"-3/4" groups, not teens and twos. At 3,100 fps with 50 gr. of RL-17, pressure signs were starting to show up but I could open the bolt without a mallet.

In my rifle, Vv 165 is the most consistent, accurate powder and the one I use. I worked with progressive powder charges until I found an accuracy node. My scope turret is calibrated to this load.

I tried 130's but they weren't as accurate as the 140's.

200 meters, Lapua brass, 142SMK,CCI, 4350, 2875 fps. Working up loads still on this rifle. 12F Savage-SS tube 30 inch, NF scope. Brand new brass never fired. Once fired should improve. Holes on right are my 338/378 Acumark with 300 grain SMK. Same scenario concerning brass.

i have a 6.5-284 as a hunting rifle . i had it built about 12 years ago and to this day it has never shot a good group at 100yrds ever. but it will shoot 2,3,4,5,6, and out to 1000 very well. i load 50.5 RL22 with 140 gr, noz, barnes, amax and 130 scirroco . my best group is .006 at 200 yrds

Don't be silly Cocadori, that group is so small there is no way you could see it shocked grin

Have magnifying glass at the ready!
I just killed a spike bull at 740 with a 142smk with a mv of 2950. My rifle is 6.5-06, but I thought I would share performance data. This is the 4th elk I have killed at similar range and all have been bang flops. This last bull penciled through on side scapula destroyed the lungs, and broke offside shoulder with the bullet coming to rest under the hide offside. The bullet spit the core but the jacket made the whole trip. I can offer some pics if you are considering the smk.
