I am not at all familiar with anything 338.

Could someone list all the 338 options out there?

338/06
338 winchester magnum
338 RUM

That is all I know.

What else is there?

Is anyone winning or coming close to winning at Williamsport with a 338?

For clean kills of white tail at 1200 yards is a 338 absolutely needed or can a 308 baer do the job?

Thanks
i know there are a couple more like the 330 dakota, 338 scovill and there are probably a few more that i can't think of right now.......blake
There are about 100 of 338's out there......The 338-416 being at the top of the heap. There are "very" few 338's shooting at williamsport.I remember someone last year shooting a 338-408 Chey-Tac.Pushing a 300gr MK to 3400fps..In a 16 pound gun to boot....The 308 Baer will work well for you out to 1200....Might wanna look at the 300 RUM also.....
338-378 Weatherby Some like it. I do not own one.
Mr Heaton;

Do you rub shoulders now and then with Bruce Baer? He is a real nice fellow... I am sure you must know him.

How does a plain old 338 winchester magnum do at 1000 yards and beyond? I am thinking I could save some money by getting something less exotic and in a factory rifle. My goal would be to learn the "trade" with the idea of eventually shooting white tail at the 1000 yard mark, maybe out to 1200, nothing further.

What do you think?
340 weatherby and 338 lapua
If I were doing what you are looking at doing I would be looking at the 338 Rum if a 338 is necessary and no wildcatting. You should use the search function on longrangehunting.com and look through all of the posts there. Lots of info and good tips.

Yep know him well....Bruce is a good guy....And VERY FUNNY!!!!!!One of my buddys was shooting my 16.5 pound 6.5 Heaton in a Match one day and Bruce was pulling his target.I was running the pits that relay and walked down to the target.Bruce said "WHAT THE HE!! DO YOU WANT??'.I told him Brian was shooting one of my guns.He then did a little dance and PUT THE WHAMIE on the target. ...In the end Brian won the relay and Bruce said it was thanks to him... ...Anyway...The 338win mag just does'nt have the powder cap to make a true LR round...If you want a 338.I too think a much better pick would be the 338RUM

I think you'll find most factory guns aren't accurate enough for long range work. I'd also think that if you built a 338 hot enough for long range work, it'll either be too heavy to tote in the field, or have too much recoil to shoot with the accuracy needed for long range work.
I have not owned any 338, prefering the big .300's instead. Based on your desire to use a factory round and rifle, I would suggest looking into a Remmy Sendero in 338 RUM. Myself, I would use the .300 RUM and 200 gr bullets for long range whitetails. I would also use a muzzlebrake. I shoot an 8.5 lb .300 Jarrett pushing 200 gr Accubond's at 2980 fps from a 24" barrel. With the brake recoil is relatively mild. The .300 Jarrett is identical to the .308 Baer. Both are based on the 8mm mag case.
What happened to the .338 LAPUA in 1000 yard matches? Is the .300 RUMMY a favorite @ 1000yards?
I am wondering if there are any 338 bullets that would expand on a whitetail after traveling 1200 yds? They would have slowed a bit. I am also wondering about the accuracy of hunting bullets at that range. From what I understand Match bullets are not made for hunting and hunting bullets are not made for reliable expansion at those kind of distances. What about a Sharps buffalo rifle in 45-70?
Great White North
Where I hunt in Northern Minnesota by the time you got to your deer someone else would have it gutted and tagged.
I get chewed out by my brother in law for taking a 200 yard shot, he says that is a long shot (for him).
dont forget the 338 Lapua.
We have been getting some awsome results with them.

Deer at 1200? Hey, if you've got a round that will do that, and the practice to make it happen, that's one thing. But even the fastest round will take about 1.5 to 2 seconds to make it that far. A deer can make a lot of moves in that amount of time, with just a little shift in position making a sure shot into (hopefully) a clean miss, or worse.

Not knocking the ambition to get that good at that range, 'cause if we all got good enough to keep our field shots inside of 8" at 1200, hunting would be much better off. That said, deer ain't paper, and your skill and practice is just part of the equation.

Just figured I'd throw in those $0.02...
Dixie Freedom,
I just thought of a cartridge for you. Its called the 338/50 Talbot. It is a Browning 50 machine gun case necked down for a .338 250 gr bullet at 3700 fps. That ought to do it.

If you are interested in a 338 Lapua on a SUCKS - I would call CELT. I got to see one of his 338's -- has monster SAKO extractor and dual ejectors - really a neat set up - IIRC he said it tosses the brass so it doesn't come up and hit the scope. (possibly bouncing back down into the action)
Here you go:

Dakota LongBow rifles
would a 300win work on whitetails out to 1000yds?
would a 300win work on whitetails out to 1000yds? .......................Yes it will
boyed are you saying that my 338 winny mag is not a good long range shooter . Because i thought it was now let me ask you this between the 30-06 and the 338 which one goes the distence and what load to use next year i want to have a good long range shooter built until then this what i got oh yea and maybe a 280 if the deal gos through.
Whats long range to you....The 338 Winny loaded with a 200gr BT would have enough left at 1000 yards to kill a deer..If the gun is accurate enough at those ranges
