I may be overstepping my bounds here but I "think" I "may" be able to shed some light on the subject as it pertains to hunting LR.

Bench rest bullets are typically more accurate then hunting bullets, all else being equal,,,,,,,is that a fair statement?

If these LR "shooters" are using a bullet that gives them repeatable accuracy from the bench at 1022 yards then doesn't it make sense to use the same "accurate" bullet to use when hunting? As "they" have already said, time and time again, the Match bullet(s) they use are not only accurate but kill game animals very well.

I must be really dumb, because I don't see any problem with using a "bench rest" bullet to kill animals as long as said bullet kills well,,,,,,and by all accounts from the LR guys, it does just that.

Am I missing something?

By Don I think you've got it.............:)
Sure, it's mostly about bullet placement. I have used match hollow points in .22 caliber for deer. The bullets I used had thicker jackets than the "varmint" hollow points. I had good results with those bullets even though every one said THOSE ARE NOT GAME BULLETS! I was pushing them pretty fast out of a 220 Swift and I was using them at what I considered to be long range for a .22. The proof is always in the pudding. If it works for you under the conditions you are hunting then go for it.

prarie dog shooter,

How ya been?

Like you, I too use a bench rest bullet out of my 22 to kill deer (doe). So far I have had good results to 400 yards which isn't really a long shot for that rifle. My 22 CHeetah MK 1 pushing a 52gr berger bullet at 4280 FPS. It gets there real quick too.
Nice hearing from you again,

Have a good one,

Don, interesting. The 52 Berger is the bullet I was talking about. I found them to hold together much better than any other bullet in that weight range. In my .222 they are the most accurate bullet I have tried but they do not exand to my liking at the velocity of the .222. They do kill dogs, I just like to see the red mist. [Linked Image]
