I have picked the brains of a few guys here on 6.5 Lapua loads but I wouldn't mind building a bit more data on powders/primers/bullets guys are having luck with...

Specifically, has anybody had much luck using IMR-4064? I liked it quite a bit in the .308 and have a good supply on hand, and it seems to be in the right area for burn rate... Thinking mainly 123gr Scenars and 130gr Berger VLDs here.

The go to powder for the 130 VLD's in the 6.5x47 Lapua is H4350.
Lapua brass, CCI 450 SRM primers, 41.1-42.2 H4350.

Varget is kind of a standard with the 123 scenars also. 37.5 grs. Varget, CCI 450, 123 Scenar seated .010" into the lands usually shoots. I agree that 4064 should work well too but I couldn't find anyone who's using it. It seems strange because it should work.

I noticed the same regarding 4064.... There's a distinct lack of info with that powder. I've got plenty of CCI-400's, but will grab 450s if that is the way to go.

CCI 450's or BR4's are what you want to use with the 6.5x47, they've got thicker cup material than the 400's & will take pressure better. The BR4's are just the match version of the 450's but most people say they can't tell the difference.

123g Amax 38.5g Varget with a CCI-450.

With 5 different barrels.

Never cared for H4350 with the 140g Bullet.
You will have a hard time getting any speed out of it.
VV550 is the powder for the 140s in a 6.5x47.

450's are a magnum primer, BR4's are a match standard primer.

They're marketed as such but looking at the specs the BR4's pretty much match the 450's. Only CCI really knows for sure if they're identical. The BR4's aren't the same as the 400's, that's for sure since the cup thickness is heavier. Maybe the 450's are hotter since they're labeled "magnum" but most guys that I've read who've tried the 450's vs. the BR4's in the 6BR and 6.5x47L say they can't tell the difference. I've tried both of them and I can't tell any difference so now I just buy the 450's and save $20 a brick. Federal will tell you that their match primers are the same as their standard primers with the exception that they go through an extra inspection step. I'm inclined to believe that's the same with the CCI450/BR4 but maybe I'm wrong.

A full case of RE-17. I'm around 41.5 gr, IIRC. Tossing 130 gr AB's at 2850..nice load. CCI 450's as the spark...

Tanner, consider, the L as the BR, noted for top shelf accuracy, those who use them want the cutting edge best in precision, and speed.

True, like most rounds, a few powders shine best, though don't let that keep you from using the 4064. Long ago it beat Varget for me in the 7/08 in accuracy, w/same speed. It was a close race.

I have some myself, and may well torch some under 120-123s. I see the 47 as ideal for 120-130s, 136-142s can do very well in many rifles, though not all depending on ROT and throating.

As Dave mentioned, a few recipe's are almost foolproof and go to, but I bet you will get all the accuracy and speed needed for practice or even varmint/general deer. Now if you are like Alan and want to bust an Elk at near 1k - those are moments when you grab THE CHOICE recipe, or if you are in a serious competition.

I'm trying to burn up all of my Scenars so I haven't gotten to run them much, but out to 500 .580 has worked for me.

I plan on switching to them once my Scenars are gone.

In my heavy -47, my two favorite loads are

140 Hybrid, 40.8 H4350, CCI 450
130 VLD, 40.25 H4350, CCI 450

This gun doesn't get played with much when it comes to testing a large variety of components. Once I found a load, I locked it down and simply shot it. I've made numerous hits on my 2k yd plate with the Hybrid load, though it runs out of umph around 1800+ yds and I have to add an extra 4 moa to make the hits.

My light -47 get hunted mostly though I did use it for the 2012 24 Hr Sniper Adventure Challenge, where I carried 65 lbs of gear over a 36 mile mountainous course for 28 hours. That load was the 130 VLD, 38.6 Varget and CCI 450.

I've tested, successfully, 100 PT, 123 mk, 127 LRX, 130 VLD/AB, 140 MB/CC/VLD and 142 Matrix VLD.

IMR 8208 has great accuracy but lower velocity with the 100 PT.

The 127 LRX and Varget killed a Montana mulie @ 500 and a large Utah cow elk @ 450 with Varget.

I used the Canadian 142 Matrix VLD and Rel 17, 2917 fps, to kill a spike elk at 950 this past October. I dare not give the load 'cause it was a lot of powder in there. In several of my Rel 17 trials, I discovered the Fed 205m primer out performed my beloved CCI 450 primer.

A sleeper powder was the IMR 4007ssc with the 140 VLD. Hunted it but didn't kill anything. The burn rate is right between Varget and H4350.

You won't find load data with some of these powders so I used 6.5CM or 260 data to extrapolate where I want to start/stop. I then let the rifle tell me where to stop as well as where the accuracy node it. I run pressure ladders, adding .2 gr increments.

Well, I think it would suffice to say that I'm very impressed with both the cartridge and this rifle. I took some brand new Lapua brass, VLD chamfered the mouths, and threw together a completely random load with an arbitrary seating depth, looked like this:

140 A-Max
2.700" COAL
38.5gr RL-17
CCI-400
Lapua Brass

I moved to 330 yards after zeroing to see how the load would hold together. I doubt I could duplicate the group on the right again... But the one on the left is under 2" as well, including the low shot...

That'll work! Approximate velocity? Thinking the x47 may be the best thing going for a 2.8" box…

Two 6.5x47 Lapua's. Target is at 1000 yards. Top and bottom shots are from the back rifle, the two center shots are from the close rifle.

John, right now I'm using a simple set of Forster FL's that I got from RenoH414. I may look into some bushing stuff but I'm pretty pleased with the dies for now.

Forster are my favorite in dies. Just want to let you know you just cost me a pile of money. As soon as I read your post, I ordered a Bartlein Barrel 6.5 barrel, 8" twist, 100 Lapua brass and a set of Forster dies. I was already going to have an 8" twist Bartlein 22-250 barrel screwed on a Remington action I have, but now I have to have the 6.5 Lapua chambered up as well! Couldn't find a micrometer seater die, but I'm pretty sure the ones from my other Forster dies will screw in to their regular seater.

An 8" 22-250 and a 6.5 Lapua strike me as a fairly wicked combo; I know the last time I shot 75 A-Maxes at 3400fps they impressed the heck out of me. I think you'll be pretty fond of the 6.5x47.... I already want one in a lightweight...

Bartlein 2Bs on these. Not too light to shoot well, not too heavy to carry... Figure both should work well from the 2.8" box.

Understood - figured a 3 Bart is similar to a 700 Mag contour.

#3 Bartleins are quite a bit bigger than a 700 Mag contour.....

Decent! I need to put together a 6.5x47, i have 6.5 creedmoors, but i feel the Lapua has a slight advantage in a rem S/A, one of the great cartridges to burn up bullets with.

My deer hunting load is a 100 TTSX in front of 40.0 gr. varget with a cci450 primer. 3075 fps out of my 22" barrel.

I just got done working up a load for my new 6.5x47L.

The target below is with RE17 on the bottom (40.0 left and 41.0gr right) and H4350 on top (40.0gr on the left and 40.5 on the right). The H4350 was running about 2750 FPS and the RL17 was around 2890 FPS. I think either one will work. All are 139gr Scenars. Also tried Varget with similar results around 38.5 gr but started seeing pressure signs.
