Have a great load with a 160gr accubond at @ 3,000 fps.
0.020 off rifling on the left, tightened right up at 0.030 on the right.

Did a real good scrubbing, after last range tr ip, and went shooting to verify clicks to 900 yards today.
1st round hit center black at 100, 2nd shot, same.
Went to banging steel, and wind was fickled. At the bench, had a se, but bullets at 800 were going right ??
Returned back to zero, and fired a 3rd on paper.
Zing!!!
It ain't me or the gun. Wind was blowing from west/sw, up on the hill.
I'm real happy with how this thing shoots.
[Linked Image]
Coues deer, is gonna be in big trouble !!
Tikka?
Nice!!
72 grains of MagPro gets me right at 3k. What's your load?

P
Bullets hitting right at 800? Could be canted rifle, spin drift or the wind. Do you have a scope level? Verified crosshairs are level?
Yes, I have a level on it.
We learned a valuable lesson on wind direction.
I'm running a stainless fluted barrel, I bought off Tanner, and fitted it to my old 8mm Rem Mag/300 RUM action.
When it screwed tight, the flutes were off, and it had to be reamed again.
Took a bit off the shoulder to line up the writing and flutes, and cut a new chamber and throat.
I'm running 1 grain over max, of rldr 22. 66.0 grains.
[Linked Image]
My action was opened up, and I have a wyatts mag box in it. Scope base screws are now 8-40's, and bolt has been fluted.
Oh, and a mcswirly.
[Linked Image]
How did you setup your level? Did you verify it was level with your crosshairs? A tall target test will help you a lot.
BTW nice rifle!!!
Could be the loopy is tracking off course...
Not tracking off, was wind.
Wind was shifting bad.
I'll have fellow member, huntr, chime in.
We were shooting together.

We both were amazed at the different wind directions, and the differences in gusts.
One shot we would correct for that hit, then would hit where aimed, because wind slowed.
Very frustrating morning.
Wind is tricky to judge especially if shooting in canyons or over them. At least it was good practice for you both.
Been doing this for some time.
700 yards, 338 Rum.
[Linked Image]
257 roberts. 550 yards.
[Linked Image]
Etc.....
Thanks for your tips, and thoughts.
I'm no expert or know it all.
Using a new to me cartridge, I'm going to ask questions.
splatter, great stuff.. I thought all you did was shoot ducks!! Hey was I wrong.. Anyway, give the lab a pet for me and show us some more rifle stuff..
Good shoooting with the 160 AB.... That being said Id look at other offerings when poking game. I ran that bullet one year....It [bleep] sucks IMHO.
WyoCoyoteHunter,
How bout a pic with wife and lab, myself, an Oryx, and a custom 280AI !!

Kend did the duracoating!

I've been around a bit...
Roe deer from Germany, Fallow deer from a chatue in Belgium, antelope buck from Montana.

There ya go. Some more rifle kills.
Nice shootin' splatter. A 7RemMagnificent and 160AB combo is very hard to beat.
splatter, very nice thanks, and lots of neat rifles..
You should notice spin drift at all times when shooting long range. If you have a 8 twist, you'll get more drift than with a 9 twist. I have a target rifle which is a 223 with 6.5 twist barrel for shooting 90 grain vlds. On the first string in the morning when it's dead calm I'm 6" right with my 2840fps load and 3.5" right with the milder 2650 load at 600 yards.
JG is way too modest.

Here's what a 7RM and 160 NAB's can do.

Of course, throw in a fair to middling trigger man... grin

I chimed in on that thread.
We were to have lunch one day when I was in his neck of the woods, but business obligations prevented that.
Or was it 2 times ?

That's funny you say that. I've never seen anything but awesome out of the 160 AB. From 250 to 500 it puts the pain on elk.
I'm using 72 grains of MagPro under a 160 NAB, where did you get the 71.5 grains of Retumbo? I have a ton of Retumbo.

P
What a great morning at the range with my friend, and fellow member here, huntr.
My 7 mag, rocked 1st round hits at 700, 800, 400, 500, and 300.
Our range. Up on the crest of the hill is a round white plate, that's 900, the berm to the right, has a round 18 inch plate, and a ram.
That's 800.
[Linked Image]straight back from the 2 track is 700, to the right, big white square is 550, in front right, 2 diamonds, is 500.
[Linked Image]
Wind is almost always a factor.
Excellent thread and pics.
Thanks.
This might clear up what's where.

Awesome setup range! Great shooting. I think I'd choose the 7mm for the coues hunt!
Now that's a range!
Love the 7, good shooting splatt.
Not to pee in the pool, as I have both, but I get 2913 and low ES from a 180 Partition from a .30-06, so what can the 7 Rem Mag do that the .30-06 can't, and with 13 grains less powder?

P
I have 3, -06's.
Don't know ?
I didn't put this 7 mag together as a wonder cartridge. If I would have wanted to keep it as a super duper, long range gun, I would have left it as a 300 RUM.
I'm just giddy I can shoot it well, and it's going to be doing duty as my all around coues deer rifle.
I don't feel it's much different than my 280AI, and less than a 300 wsm I have.
It's a cartridge I like, a bullet that performs, and a gun I'm comfortable with.
Plus pride of "designing", and putting together a rifle to my specs.

There's many a cartridge out there that far exceeds the performance of a 7mm Remington Magnum.
I like this one, and what I put together to shoot it in.
Good grief, those are 300 WM numbers.
Oh, and it does have 1/2 the drift with the right bullet. But then stuff can just keep getting worked backwards because 160AB in a 7RM isn't far from a 140AB in a 270.

Sooooo, carry an 8# 7RM or a 6.5# 270?

Quite the conundrum.

2913 is big number for the 30-06. Nothing wrong with that, but definitely at upper limits of pressure. The 7mm 180 scenar has a .661 bc so for shooting stuff past 500 yards for us, it does good things. Use whatever floats your boat.
Very fortunate to have such a nice place to shoot. Great shooting by the way. 7 Rem Mag has always been one of my favorites.
This is about half way down the line of benches. It's pretty much in line with the 100 yard sight in board.
This is my 280AI, banging steel on this day.

338 RUM this day.

30/06, getting some range time.

I thought so too.

30-06 and partitions wins.
Not a big 7mm fan but I've seen it work on moose many times ....
My old mans favorite though, he has put a boatload of moose to sleep with one in the last 30 years, last fall I had a chance to take my dad on a moose hunt to my happy hunting grounds and he put his 7mm RM to work on a nice bull with the 160 gr Fail Safe bullet .....

good times........

Well...we can say this and that beats a 7Rem Mag but that bull looked pretty dead to me.

Which is the way most stuff ends up, properly hit with a good bullet from a 7 RM.
I wonder if that's one of the fluted 7mm barrels that came from my stash? I've got one left and its loosely screwed into a 700 action in a box in my basement. I need to put it in the barrel vise and wrench it down and see what it'll do.

Bb
It came from member, Tanner.
moose video was uber!
531 versus 474 bc wins at long range 😃 Nice rifle.
That's cool, be fun to shoot at that place.
Two friends went to Africa with 162g SST loaded with 71.5g of Retumbo, fed 215, got the 6 plains game, all one shot each dead right there, 3130 fps.

PH was very impressed, he wrote an article showing the distances and DRT effect of the 162g SST on two Eland and 2 Kudu.

Obviously, the Hornady 162 SST is a tough bullet.
