Any one have any information on performance on these new bullets? If they shoot in my rifle, Ill be running them in my 28 Nosler for the year. Ill hunt Coues deer with them, and have my buddy shoot his cow elk (hopefully) with my rifle.

Casey,

LRH has a thread dedicated to these bullets. It is over 100 pages long. There has to be something in it you can use:

http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f19/hornady-eld-x-official-thread-161172/
I've sparatically read the thread, with out seeing the information I'm after.

They should work well at long range, but at that velocity, the splat factor will be an issue at moderate range. I would worry about penetration on a cow elk. These are basically a interlock with a sleek profile and a tip that will make them expand fast. If you shoot an elk off the shoulder, it should be OK.

I too have thumbed through the thread and found little info. Just another forum with members engaged in pissing matches.

There was a thread on the Nosler site where a fellow from memory had spectactular expansion and shallow penetration shooting them into water filled jugs.

IIRC it was a heavy 30 cal ELDX launched well above 3000fps.

Here it is...

http://forum.nosler.com/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=32851

Looks like it held together a lot better at around 2700fps which would be expected.
Posted By: bobnob17 Re: Hornady ELD-X Reports? - 07/02/16
I haven't shot the ELD bullets so shoot me down for speculating, but all I've heard about them (the X version anyway) makes me think they are just a revamp of the SST.

I HAVE shot LOTS of the SST in 270 Win, 308 Win, 30-06 and 338 WM, and in my experience on lots and lots of pigs and goats and the odd deer, they are very good killers IF you keep impact speeds below 2800fps.

The more impact velocity drops below that, the better they work.

I will gladly give the ELDXs a run but only in heavy for calibre weights.

Again, sorry to speculate but I suspect my instinct serves me well....

I called Hornady and was told to keep impact velocity at or below 2,500 feet per second.
Posted By: bobnob17 Re: Hornady ELD-X Reports? - 07/02/16
And at those speeds the SST and Amax are Specials.

I'll be hunting with the 143grin ELD-X next week. I'll be Axis hunting and most mature bucks weigh 220-245 on the hoof so I won't be able speak to penetration on an Elk size animal. I expect a shot no longer than 300yards but we will see!

OBTW my loads are averaging 2780fps.

Ok so what LR bullet is good for impact velocities above 3000 ft/sec.

Barnes LRX
I called the Hornady Tech line last week about the 212 eld-x from my 300WM. The tech advised that for impact velocities to 3k one should expect 24-26" of penetration in ballistic gel with 65-70% retained weight.

Hornady published tests with the 200 gr eld-x vs other LR bullets and got similar results.

That's a straight line of bullchit. 178 and 212gr bullets at 3100fps will go vmax on deer, sheep, hogs.

When I called Hornady they told me impact velocity needs to be below 2,500 feet per second. blush

The 162's shoot great in my heavy 7 and to the same POI as the 162 Amax at 100 yards. I'm also extremely interested in the terminal reports as they start to come in this fall. I'll be using them for deer and spike elk (as my LR bullet).

Casey, what about an Accubond LR or Scirocco?
No thanks in the ABLR, they're no bueno. I think the heaviest scirocco is 150 in 284 isn't it?

Casey
What about some bergers in 195gr?
Posted By: rcamuglia Re: Hornady ELD-X Reports? - 07/13/16
The .264" 143gr out of a 6.5 SAUM killed two oryx in New Mexico recently with stellar performance
Posted By: Ringman Re: Hornady ELD-X Reports? - 07/13/16
rcamuglia,

What was the impact velocities?

What's not to love about the 175 ABLR? Do they not shoot in your 28 Casey? I killed my elk and moose last year with my 28 Nosler using the Nosler factory 175 loads as I didn't have time for load development and they shot .5 moa anyway. Two one shot kills - 200 yards on the elk and 568 yards on the moose. Perfect bullet performance, just like the 190 ABLR's I used the year before on my moose out of a .300WM. I love them.

When my rifle was a 7 lrm, I had crushed bullets during seating, sparatic accuracy, and a lot of 2 in 1 out groups. I originally thought it easy bedding, but after having the amity double check the bedding, and research it a operated the 2 in 1 out was pretty normal for amino peers over 3000.

805, in my opnion, after running the numbers of the 195 @ 3000 and the 180 Hybrid and 175 eld at 3150-3200, there wasn't enough gained until I believe 1200 yards or so to warrant using that bullet

Casey
I understand the numbers with the 195vs 180 hybrids. IMO I'd load both and see which shoot better. Both bullets will get it done on elk!
Ha. Me having an Elk tag more then once a decade! That's funny!

My rifle is also 1:9 reisted, so I'm nit sure I could even stabilize those 195s

IME, you'd come within 100fps of your 180 load with the 195. I'm betting you'd stabilize them in your 9 twist...
Posted By: 805 Re: Hornady ELD-X Reports? - 07/14/16
I'm betting it will stabilize the 195s. What I meant was load both and test for groups and drop. Whichever shoots better from your rifle I'd go with. Either bullet will be a hammer. My buddy is using the 180 hybrids over retumbo with excellent range results so far. RL33 is also a great powder in 28nosler.

None. Not if you want picture perfect mushrooms at 3k plus FPS, and good expansion at 1,600-1,800 FPS. They are called "Long Range" bullets for a reason. The whole purpose of bullets such as the ELD-X and ABLR is to offer great expansion/fragmentation at low impact velocities, while having just enough "control" to make it into the chest cavity at 3K plus FPS.

Bullets such as those and Bergers and even AMAX's kill just fine up close but they won't look pretty when pulled out of the animal. Big deal.
Posted By: Jeff_O Re: Hornady ELD-X Reports? - 07/19/16
Agree, though even in my small sample of 162 Amax deer kills I had one come completely apart and not reach the far lung on a broadside shot at 200 yards. MV was ~ 2950 fps. So....... I'm all for giving the ELD-X a whirl.

Elkhunter 49 how did the Eld-X do on the Axis?
