No photo but today I shot a couple of prairie dogs at 483 yards with my 204 ar15 with a nightforce shv 4-14x56 on top of it. I verified one kill with a neck shot, the other one was shot in the leg and it dragged itself back into its hole. I'm pretty sure this is my longest kill so far. I guess this was hunting.

I realize that occasionally prairie dogs are victims of non lethal shot placement, but I think if it was me I wouldn't be bragging about it online.

Apparently, common sense is not all that common.

You guys should send huntsman 22 a PM, I hear he's organizing a prairie dog rescue league.

Agree with some of the thoughts but lets not "throw stones in glass houses". This is a Long Range Hunting forum is it not? Who shoots prairie dogs at 100 yards anyway (except maybe with a .22)? Who hasn't had a few make it to their hole? Not perfect or necessarily desirable but it goes with the sport. "PC" is for those who live in a fictional, make-believe world.

You can't shoot em all in the babies....

204's suck!!! There's no way you hit something at that distance with said chambering!! Haha

Posted By: montanabadger Re: 483 yard prairie dog - 12/15/17
Nice to see you again Fred, yeah anyone who's shot sage rats has had a few escape down the hole, including me. But I don't think it's good form to wound one and brag about it online. If that makes me a puzzy in your eyes so be it. I don't really give a flying fuik what you think.
Posted By: smokepole Re: 483 yard prairie dog - 12/15/17
The thing is, I don't think the OP was "bragging" about anything. He was admitting that one of his shots wasn't clean.

Nothing more than that.

If you've never wounded a PD, you haven't been at it for very long.

I had one. It was back in '86. Freak weather phenomenon caused it.

I suppose calling it bragging might not have been the best word to describe it.

1986 you say....well, at least it was before "global warming",....can't blame it on that.
Posted By: smokepole Re: 483 yard prairie dog - 12/16/17
It was caused by global warming, but I was the only one who knew about it back then. Until that one night, I had too many beers and ran my mouth to that prick Al what's-his-name.
I'm sorry that my shot was six inches off. Here's one that didn't crawl away.

Do what everyone else does on the internet and lie about it. Or just tell the sanctimonious twatts who berate you to GF themselves.

Bad plague this year. I don't even go near them!

I'd love to shoot some, someday...

They look like they reek, even worse opened up, I'd imagine?

What do y'all do with the carcasses? Funeral Pyre? Buzzards? Barbeque?

Geez, couple guys come up and just mention the fact that sometimes its not the best to put all the info on the table, and I agree. And get crucified... we all know it happens, just keep the public info non public IMHO. Damn easy and twat be damned.

I have to many years shooting PD's in Montana with wind going five different ways to believe that shot happened with a 204

Yeah, that's 17hmr range.

Aah .......ya that's probably right. Been some outstanding shots made with a keyboard..
Posted By: prairie_goat Re: 483 yard prairie dog - 02/09/18
If you think 483 yards is impossible or even all that difficult with a 204, then you REALLY need to shoot more.

5 direction of wind...Yeah, that may be luck for most..But, not on a windless day in June in MT with a CZ 527 Varmint 204. One died at 521 lased yards. Plenty met their end that day at 400 plus sum yards with our 204’s. Next day, windy, different story...204’s took a nap and the 243 win came out.
Posted By: prairie_goat Re: 483 yard prairie dog - 02/09/18
Yep, when the wind really blows 483 yard pdogs are a really tough shot with any rifle. On calmer days, about anything with enough accuracy and scope adjustment or hold over will work.
Posted By: Beaver10 Re: 483 yard prairie dog - 02/09/18
+1
Accurate rifle, excellent loads, great optics 😉
