What bullet would you start with for long range hogs and targets?
Posted By: pullit Re: 223 1 in 9 hunting gun - 06/04/19
For hogs, the 62 gr TTSX would be a good one. For target I would look at the 69 gr match king or something in the ELD line.
Targets only after 250 yards... will it kill them further??? Absolutely... will you put the animal down immediately further out??? NO. I have shot an awful lot of .223 ammo on deer and hogs. LIMIT your range, and even then, they run a LOT of the time... I will not shoot head shots over 75 yards with this caliber... not saying it will not do the job further out - it will - but your margin of error is very slim.

Targets - shoot them at any distance you choose.

I've seen very good accuracy with the Sierra 65 Game King in a 1 in 9" twist CZ using H4895 powder.

Whats "long range'? You run out of energy pretty quick with the 223.
Posted By: Jim_Knight Re: 223 1 in 9 hunting gun - 06/04/19
I have a Bushmaster Predator with a 9" twist and the Sierra 69gr Matchking HP worked swell on prairie dogs/rabbits. I never used it on game though. I would agree that the 62gr Mono would be a great one on hogs/deer. I am one of those that believe a faster spin helps in killing power, especially in smaller calibers. I used the Hornady 68 OTM in a 9" twist 22-250 AI with fine results, its also a tough enough bullet to hunt game with. The 75gr Swift in a .224 TTH was awesome too, but it had an 8" twist. I never tried it in the Bushmaster.

62 TTSX
My 20" HBar 1/9 handles the Hornady 75gr BTHP and 77 Nosler. If those work for you it will add some BC and energy downrange,

My 1:9 runs the 75 A-Max at 2950 fps. That load certainly isn’t limited to 250 yards.

If my barrel wouldn’t stabilize that bullet I would be running the Hornady 75gr HPBT Match.
Posted By: szihn Re: 223 1 in 9 hunting gun - 06/04/19
Keep in mind that your range for hits and your range for bullet expansion are likely to be VERY different. TSX bullet usually don't expand much under about 2000 FPS at impact.

In some cases where all you are tying to do is get a bullet in them, it may not matter much. (like fighting the enemy instead of sport hunting) But if you are trying to harvest meat you should consider the BC of the TSX (around .286) and the muzzle velocity you can get with a long barreled AR and you'll see that if you start the bullet at about 3000 it is going 2000 at about 300 yards.

The only thing I'd shoot at a hog around here out of a .223 is a barnes.

I'll defer to the experts shooting hogs in bumbfukk Alaska though......

BTW, again deferring to the western hunters that know everything about hunting every animal they've never seen, most hogs around here are shot at night or very last light which means close range, which means the B.C. of the bullet don't mean much.

You'll defer to your "means","abilities" and "comprehension"...if only by default. Congratulations?!?

I'm using this bullet myself. As for range like others have said short is better. I generally only shoot heads, necks and spine on feral hogs and this bullet so far is just fine if it hits bone. The deer I shot with it at 100 yards or so exhibited a pretty quick death but internal damage was not much, less than what I have seen with the 60 grain Hornady HP flat base bullet. It did exit though. Gearing up for another hog hunt out on my lease soon, mounted my night vision on a 5.56 AR and will use the 75 gr. Hornady BTHP.

Some guys just can't comprehend the whole close range/BC don't matter thing. There are some dense MF's here for sure.

Have shot a good few pigs with the 75g HPBT from the 223 and if I happen to be carrying a 223 I’d just as soon have that bullet than most others. Like the 65g SGK too.

I’d much sooner have a 243 or bigger though.

We have a fair amount of pigs around. I have shot lots of them up to a bit over 250 with subsonic 22lr in the head, out to about 50 yards. Can't be much energy there.

If you have an accurate 223, and many can be really accurate, and a good enough bullet, the retained energy for a head shot should be there a fair ways out. As to longer head shots, I typically stop on heads about 300 or so yards.

Of course the other day, first time I've shot past about 250 or so in a long time, I was offered a chance at a steel wolf at 650, and the lung area was so covered with splats, I shot the head. Missed the eye by maybe an inch or so first shot.

If the energy is there, for X shot, then its only up to the shooter to know if they are capable or not.

As to the original question....the 69 Tipped Match King has accounted for several rock chucks, coyotes, and at least three decent mule-deer so far. BC is well above average, and we've found them to be very accurate in a variety of rifles.

It won't leave you wanting imho.

Neither,
Bought a nice 223 second hand after being told it had a 1in 9 barrel, when I received it took a look and it turns out to have a 1 in 14 twist believe it or not, needless to say it went back.
Was pretty pissed off about the deal, hence my lack of participation in this thread
I have decided to build one, and it will be a 1 in 7.

65 grain SGK’s shoot very well out of my 9 twist rifle. I have no experience with hogs but have killed deer out to 300 with it. Fri3nd of mine who has killed many hogs likes it for that. Now that I’ll be living in SC Inwill probably do some hog hunting.
Y’all are so mean to Big Sheila. Bless her heart.

Take a look at the 75 grain ELD Match. Great BC for long range. Shoots great out of my 1-8” Tikka.
