Last rebarrel job for the year for me. Shaen bought a new reamer for this one and Benchmark turned the #2, 23.5" 8 twist in 2 weeks. .608 at the muzzle which makes the accuracy all the more impressive to me.

Things I learned lately:
1. Decide on cartridge that Lapua makes brass for
2. Buy Hawk Hill or Benchmark barrels, others are great I am sure, but these two worked well for me
3. Have Shaen chamber it
In a total of 33 rounds fired, have drops to 700 confirmed and it is ready to roll. Weighs around 6.5 pounds bare and a little over 7.5 with the 6x SS on it. Grabbed a load off of 6mmbr.com for the 6.5-284, shot a couple quarter inch groups at 100 and then went long. As a side note, the lapua brass comes out of the blue box, gets chamfered, primed and loaded. No prep, no resizing. 140 vld running right around 2875 fps.

For only a 6x at 600 yards, it shot a group just over .5 moa. Very low recoil as well. So for a longish range easy to get to shoot rig, talk to Shooter71. Pics below.

That'll work. Great killing bullet.

Nice . . . other than it's 'wrong-handed'. laugh

Jeez, Kurt. I told you there was tape measure in the fencing box on the quad. Ya didn't have to use that dirty ol' shotshell for a scale....

Of the riflers that Shaen has done for you, there ain't a dog amongst them.

I take direction poorly Don. They've sure been easy to get to shoot well.

Nice Kurt, those 140’s are dandy’s

Hot dang - I love it when a plan comes together.
The load work was far too easy - looks you'll have the knock the new off of it in the field. laugh

Very nice rifle. I agree with you on the brass and benchmark barrels. Is they’re a reason you are not a cut barrel fan.
Also if you are adding barrel to a list proof has blown my mind as of late. I was very skeptical of proof and I was 100% wrong they kick ass.

Very nicely done!! I'd like to build something like that for each of my son's HS graduation present. Both shoot LH so mine are of little use to them.

Pointer, Lot of old lefty bdl rigs around. I'd buy a barrel, pay $285 to have Shaen chamber it, and bed it into the wood stock. They can buy mcmillans later lol.

Fred, My last 3 were Hawk Hills, but their smallest profile I saw wouldn't get me to the #2Hart size I was replacing. Time will tell but this Benchmark seems pretty nice.

Looks nice....did you use a LA?

Who made that scope mount?

I really like the benchmark for a button barrel ease of brake in is top shelf . I have one on a 280ai and another on a 6.5x284 they shoot very well. I believe I still have a dealer account with them as they are a favorite.
Always freaked out about fluting one so I don’t get it done. Those stress relief treatments aren’t for me to taunt.

As far as cut barrels they take a little longer to settle down but seem to get the little tiny extra I always dig for and flutes can be whatever I want.
The proof is just more than I could ever wish for. The wife shoot her 7-08ai into .5 moa at 830 last weekend absolutely jaw dropping. Once my proof high wears off I’ll try a hawk hill.

Shooter71 is a great guy for sure.

Yep, used to be my 6.5-06. So far the 6.5-284 is showing signs of being way easier to get shooting.

Nightforce. Very little leeway in moving scope forward or back. For me, with this swfa, it provides a great solution. That said, I may go to a 0 moa rail and seekins rings so I can mount up a scope with less vertical adjustment. But kind of hate changing anything.

Looks good 30338, hopefully it kills something in the near future.

Definitely a shooter... any issues with feeding?
Posted By: pete53 Re: Easy 6.5-284 - 09/01/19
i would agree 6.5x284 is a very easy cartridge to get to shoot well for target and hunting. my most accurate standard hunting rifle is a Savage s.s. 6.5x284 and my most accurate custom bench rifle for any distance 100-1000 yards is a Bat action 6.5x284 it shoots 2`s and 3`s all day long at 100 yards.

It started life as a 30-06 and feed that and 6.5-06 great. Was wondering how the 6.5-284 would do, but actually feeding great with original parts.

Very nice, it's good feeling when a build works as it should and shoots even better , you have an exceptional recipe, now if some critters will stand still you should have some pics soon!
Posted By: cast10K Re: Easy 6.5-284 - 09/04/19
Nice shooting! Not that it matters, but are you leaving some velocity on the table? What are you expecting for barrel life?
Posted By: 30338 Re: Easy 6.5-284 - 09/04/19
A guy could probably get it up to 3000 fps. After falling into an accuracy mode at 2875 fps I called it good right out of the gate. It gets me well past what I'd kill stuff with. Without shooting long strings, I expect 2000 rounds minimum with it.

Bruin pics perhaps forthcoming, but it sure is an easy rig to pack.
Posted By: cast10K Re: Easy 6.5-284 - 09/04/19
No doubt, that is a purpose built killing rig. Good luck with the bears!
Posted By: Wrongside Re: Easy 6.5-284 - 09/04/19
Another well thought out lefty rig, 30338! I like that setup a lot. Good shooting!
Posted By: Huntr Re: Easy 6.5-284 - 09/05/19
Well done! Shaen's work is top notch, my lefty Winchester is shooting lights out since he did his magic.

Cant go wrong with a Hawk Hill....love them!
Posted By: fredIII Re: Easy 6.5-284 - 09/08/19
I’m fire cracked 8” deep at around 1100 on my 6.5x284 and it’s not shooting for [bleep].

If I get 1100 rounds of 3000 FPS with 140’s I will gladly swap new rubber on the machine for more.

Great looking rifle Kurt, I suspect it will see a lot of use.
Posted By: Oldman03 Re: Easy 6.5-284 - 09/08/19
Good looking rifle and I hope it serves you well.

About 10-12 years ago, my FIL had one built. That was without a doubt the most accurate rifle I've ever seen. IIRC, he took a really good shooting Rem 700 in .260 to a gunsmith and months later brought home a 6.5-284. Predator action, jewel trigger set at a few ounces, 12-42x56 Nightforce scope, and it started out with a Kreiger barrel. I dont remember what chamber specs it was cut to (it wasn't Norma), but after a year of trying to get the rifle to shoot accurately, he gave up, sent the rifle to a gunsmith in Az. The gunsmith changed the barrel to a Schneider and cut the chamber to Norma specs. He worked up a couple of loads that were just awesome. Only thing that made the rifle awkward was the 28" barrel.
