I am looking to customize a Remington 600. What is available out there to build this custom

Composite stocks?

Triggers?

What else? Pillar bedding?

Recommended gunsmith that has experience with the 600

Advice from members who own a 600 that has been customized?

McM inlets for the 600/660 action, but they only inlet for 700 ADL trigger guards reversed, which I don't care for. Boyds inlets stocks for the 600/660 actions. I have 600/660s that have been rebarreled, restocked, and have CVMW bottom metal installed, but I haven't swapped any triggers.

A 600/660 isn't much different from a Seven action, but enough different that Seven bottom metal isn't a drop in fit.

Awhile back somebody posted a picture of a 600/660 installed in a laminated mannlicher style stock. Whoever did the work on that rifle seemed to know what he was doing.

I have a McMillian stocked 600 in a 22 cheetah Mk II . Barrel is a NWPB barrel when they were in Spokane WA. 1/8 twist in a Varmint wt. 26” shoots 75 gr. Pills Real well.

Model 7 or 700 triggers won't work. The rear tang on the 600 is shorter and the rear action screw will not clear the back of a 700 trigger.

For a stock you might check with MPI. I have two of their stocks and will be getting a couple more. I’ve been pleased with their stocks and service. They won’t be able to help with a new floor plate I don’t believe but they do pillar bedding and have several stock style options.

My favorite killin rifle by far. Factory duped hart snout, 8” twist fluted, timney trigger, McMillan model 7 handle, had my smith drill/tap rear base, so I can run model 7 talleys. Great handy little rig. 6ai shootin 80 gr bt’s at 3650. Hurts shiit.

I forgot to mention that I always swap out the recoil lug for one that matches the contour of the barrel shank in place of the style of recoil lug that Remington chose to install on the 600/660s.

Nice.

Years ago, I had a 600, in .308 that I restocked. Can't remember if it was a Brown Precision or a Gentry. Regardless, I kick myself every time I think of letting it go ! cry

Thanks. The 600s make for a handy little rifle.

I did one in a McMillan hunters edge with a Pacnor in 7-08. Timney trigger with the Adl trigger guard reversed. Handy little rifle but it went down the road.... never warmed up to it like I did with my Kimber Montana. YMMV.

I'm half-tempted to get a hold of Brown Precision and see if they still inlet for the 600/660. Got a couple in the safe and would love to re-stock at least one. McM will inlet just about any of their stocks for the 600/660. However, they suggest the M7 version because of the shorter forend. Fine and dandy - I'm just not a fan of Schnobel forends.

Judman;
Good afternoon and Happy Thanksgiving to you all sir, I hope that this finds you well.

In particular if I recall correctly your other half wasn't totally well and I hope that's improving.

With apologies to the OP as "this has nothing to do with that", but holy smokes that's a rotund mulie buck sir! cool

Did you happen to weigh the carcass? He looks just round! grin

The face doesn't look like a really old boy either or am I wrong? He just looks like a really big bodied younger buck that hasn't missed a meal!

Anyways sir, congrats on that buck, I love seeing the rounder ones like that as it usually means the habitat is decent for the entire herd.

Happy Thanksgiving again and all the best to you all.

Dwayne

600 Mohawk action, I added the 4th hole for 2-piece mounts, reprofiled and shortened the shroud, fluted the bolt body, cut off the bolt locking safety and replaced the knob for a sleeker more modern version, 700 style recoil lug, m7 take off barrel, wildcat composites model 7 pattern stock converted to the 600 action and into adl, custom trigger guard. 5lbs even as shown.

What was necessary to convert the M7 Wildcat Compsite stock to the 600 action?

As mentioned earlier in this thread, years ago I had a 600 that I restocked with either a Brown or Gentry - memory fails me. I do recall though that it required the reversed ADL triggerguard. With Willie's bottom metal now available, it sure would be nice if McM, Brown, or Wildcat would inlet for the original bottom metal configuration. I can understand their reluctance to do so based on the old plastic OEM bottom piece. Willie's bottom metal is a blessing to those of us that own 600s/660s and want to retain the originality of the 600/660.

It wouldn’t be bad if the 600 trigger was at the back of the housing like most triggers, but they aren’t. The trigger is at the front of the trigger housing so unless you have freakishly long fingers, the action needs to come back in the stock.
So it took some dicking around, but nothing really hard.

The reversed adl guard works but looks stupid since the 600 trigger sits in the middle of the guard. Hard to see in this pic, but I made my own “adl” triggerguard for the 600/660 where the trigger rides where it should.

* forgot to mention I had a wildcat m7 stock on a 660 in 350RM probably 25years ago, that one used a bottom metal with the factory bottom metal footprint. So that is possible aswell.

Thanks for the info. Maybe a call to Wildcat Composites is in order to see if it's possible to get the M7 style stock inletted for the OEM bottom metal.

I don’t think they will do it, but it’s pretty easy to rework a blank.
Posted By: WiFowler Re: Custom Remington 600 - 12/01/20
bigJ,

Based on your experience, if one were to open up a M7 blank, as delivered, to use the OEM-style bottom metal, where would the trigger sit in the triggerguard?
Posted By: micky Re: Custom Remington 600 - 12/01/20
I have always wanted a 600 custom in a McM M7 stock in something rather dull like a 250 Sav or 243 with a 21-23 inch barrel. Nothing magical, maybe a FX2 6x36. Simple custom rifle built to be carried around and used like crazy.

Not sure if I understand the question. If you use oem 600/660 bottom metal, the trigger will sit where it should. The problem is if you don’t move both the action and bottom metal backwards in the stock the trigger is quite far away from the pistol grip.

HS precision made one for me with a short LOP as requested, almost. They didn't want to go to 12 1/2" just 12 3/4". I'm short and with winter clothing on for the Misery deer season I wanted the shorter LOP. So I would go with McMillan. Be Well, RZ.
