I do love small ring Mausers, been on the lookout for a 7x64 or donor for same.

Contacted Jim Kobe about a 7x64 rebarrel, red pad, mounts and perhaps a new bolt and bottom metal.

May hold off on the last two, may commission one of Jim's custom stocks down the road with all the bells and whistles.

Very nice looking rifle.

Congrats on a nice looking rifle at a good price.....even though it's not a M70 (ha!)

What a find and what a score, very nice.

Thanks gents.

If amyone has a kid who can use that scope, let me know.

Cool rifle with some unique features like the checkering and sculpting at the bottom metal. Don't think I'd change anything on that stock as long as it fit me.

LOP is too short unfortunately, hence the pad.

That rifle is just about the last G33/40 I would pick to tear down for just the action.

Mike Conner from Alaska is a craftsman from the Golden Age of American custom stockmaking from the 20th century who was apprenticed to Dale Goens of NM.
Mike Conner and his stocks were pictured in several of Jim Carmichaels books- his work was that good.

It the rifle were mine, I would have a top flight metal man do two things-

First- I would replace that ugly knurled Williams bolt handle.

Second- make sure the feed rails were not opened up too much to accommodate the rebated 284 case so that it does precludes a re-barrel to 7x64.

Even it that is the case, a 6.5 x 284 or plain .284 would still both be sweet chamberings for such a rifle.

Agree.

Way too nice to tear down for the action.

Edited to add, if it’s an 8 twist, and the barrel was in as good a shape as the gun, think I’d stay with the 6-284.

Long bullets should work well and I think OP would be impressed. I really like my M-70 pre-64 6.5-284.

Excellent points on the metalwork jk16. I'd also be curious to see how the fatter rounds are stacking in the mag box itself and if the box had been widened for the fatter cases.

Looks like a great buy!

Kobe will look everything over, of course.

If he says it's possible, 7x64.

6x284 would be a very fast 6mm, if you decide to keep it!

Assuming of course, the barrel is properly twisted.

Nice rifle ..... That would become a 6.5x57 if I owned it.

Wondering if the feed rails may have been altered to work with the 284 case.

I saw that and wondered why. Aren't certain scopes available with the windage turret on the left side?

There may be scopes like that, but I'm not familiar with them. This scope is clearly turned and I have to wonder if this is to eliminate an ejection problem by moving the turret out of the way of exiting brass.

I wouldn’t change a thing, nothing except the scope and mounts.

Mike Connor was a very good stockmaker. You will be hard pressed to find someone to make something that is an improvement.

The barrel is a Douglas Fwt so is relatively easy to replace with another if you want a 284 based cartridge. You are likely to have feeding issues if you attempt to change it to a 7x57 dimensioned cartridge. Besides there are good sources for 284 and 6.5-284 brass.

Don’t eff it up.

Maybe it didn't eject correctly so it was turned so the brass would clear the turret?

Wonder what’s the twist?

Does the 6-284 have a std SAAMI twist? That one’s probably custom, so who knows. I’d hope it was an 8 twist.

Considering when the rifle was assembled I bet it is a 1-10. In those days the 6 Rem had the fastest twist which was either 9.5 or 9.75.
I don’t think Douglas made anything faster than 10.

SAAMI shows chamber specs, didn’t see a specified ROT like the Creed.

10 better than slower, but 8 would to me seem about right.

Hornady gives load data for their 105’s, stating 10 twist won’t stabilize it.

For my use, I’d probably rebarrel to an 8 twist 6-284 or 6.5-284. If one had a .284 itch, the patent .284 round is a good one.

There could be some major issues, converting an action modified for the .284, back to a std round.

The 6mm Remington had a 1-9 twist from the get-go, since Remington wanted to get well beyond the 1-12 debacle.

In fact Remington switched to 1-9 twists in their .243 Winchester rifles at the same time, rather than have to button-rifle two different twists for the two cartridges. I know this because my first .243 Winchester was a Remington 700 BDL, purchased slightly used in 1974, which had a 1-9 twist....
Posted By: Dirtfarmer Re: Bought a G33/40 today - 07/04/22
I guess it depends on how much work was done on the action to accommodate the fatter .284 case.

Often working on the mag follower, maybe a wider box mag and feed ramp tweaking will be sufficient for the .284 family of rounds. Now, if they messed with the rails, that’s different. So, going back from wide .284 cases to conventional sized cases may or may not be a problem. A good smith can make it work regardless. Just a function of time and cost.

Nice score. I like your idea of the oberndorf bottom metal, change the bolt handle to a long either straight or slightly bent oberndorf tear drop bolt handle, remove the charger hump. It looks like it already has a mdl 70 style safety.

If the feed rails have been modified and the cost to repair is too high. I would leave as is if it shot ok or turn it into a 284 winchester. I like the 284 even though I have never owned one.

Good luck with your project. Heck it's still nice if you don't do anything to it.

Agree.

The .284 family of rounds are good ones, although not the most popular.
