Groundhog zapper?
Posted By: dave7mm Re: 22/243 Middlestead - 08/06/22
Nope.
Doe getter .
Gonna put the zap on some deer šŸ¦Œ and see how it works out.
Parker Ackley said the 220 Swift with the proper bullet.
Was the best one shot deer killer of all time.
Just have to try it myself.
I didn't have alot of interest in using the Swift case
Looked around and came up with this one.
A 22 CHeetah with a 30 degree shoulder if you will.
Got some 55g TTSXs .
Time will tell.

I think you might have a lightning bolt on your hands.

Yep thatā€™ll leave a mark! I/we used the 62 tsx in 22-250AI a couple of years. My wife shot more than I did but she never had a deer take a step. She tends to aim more into the shoulder than I do.

The only reason we switched was the 75 Amax has worked great too and I stopped switching loads for deer and used the amax year around.

Evnin, a bud uses one in a R.E.M. Pump (not my choice) it simply electrocutes coyotes, no spinning, no flopping around just DRT. Have fun with it!!! GWP. šŸ¾šŸ‘£šŸ¾šŸ‘£šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦

Was the 62g TTSX exiting on those shoulder shots?

Dave I look forward to how that Hawk Hill barrel shoots once you get load development done. Also report on how it cleans up?

Looks like a fun project.

Seems a good fit for the 70 grain Accubond.

Different gun but my Beanland built 22-250 with a hawk hill 2 is a hammer and cleans like a dream

Should push a 55gr to 3900ish, no?

I think thats a realistic estimate.
Won't know for sure untill I get some ladders shot and see where the pressure is.

They'll push 52 grainers 5000 fps.

I think Iā€™ll just take Dober at his word though grin

Well hell, i was wrong, you may have no interest in Warp 50 speed, but, called my old Bud, he said 30gr Bergers went 5300 fps over 51gr RL-15 in 26"s of barrel, he just wanted to see how fast he could go, also said 52gr Amax's will run 4650 with RL-15, says you "may" find a beak left if you hit a crow this side of 200 yards LOL!
Posted By: Idaho_Shooter Re: 22/243 Middlestead - 08/11/22
I had Sharp Shooter Supply rechamber a 26 inch 112V from 22-250 to 22-243 AI 40 degree. I never really pushed the pressure with it. Shot 60 gr Hornady spire point at 3800 fps comfotably. I would have to dig out notes to tell you what powder I used.

Let me know if you are interested.

Iā€™ve got the Hawk Hill 1-7 224 barrel for my sons gun you gave me the stock for. Along with a TriggerTech. It should be a dandy when itā€™s all done.

Hope it shoots like that.

dave7mm;
Good evening to you sir, I hope the day behaved for you and all who matter to you are well.

Thanks for the thread and the build specs, it looks like an interesting project for sure.

Just looking at the cases, that is a .22-250AI that I've got and a .243 case, I can't see why 3900 with a 55gr would be a problem to hit or exceed.

Years and years ago I built a long range coyote bomber with a 1:14 twist in .22-250 because that's what we did then. It's a 26" Douglas Premium Air Gauged No 4 contour so not really a lightweight rifle, but it'll push 55gr VMax or Ballistic Tips to 3850 with either IMR or H 4895.

When our youngest daughter started hunting, she got a whitetail doe draw and we were hunting the hayfields of the fellow we bought horse hay from, so packing the gun wasn't an issue. I went as far as loading up some 55gr Hornady Spires in it and also bought some 60gr Partitions, but she killed her young doe with her .250AI without needing help from the Old Man, so that was that for testing it out on deer.

As GWP said, it's absolute death on dogs. Crazy really compared to almost anything else we tried.

I want to say that Eileen Clarke has been using a .22-250 on some smaller big game the last few years too and the reports have been all great, so yours should be just a bit better than great, you know? wink

Thanks and good luck on your hunts with it.

I have a 14 twist Swift and have been thinking of a fast twist .243 Middlestead or Swift for medium size game. The problem I find with .224 is the same with 6mm, there aren't many (any?) high bc hunting bullets that will take the high impact velocities consistently. I'd like a 75 grain .224 mono hunting bullet or even a very good bonded bullet with a bc around .450 that would work in a 7 or 8 twist, just like I'd like a 90 grain 6mm mono (or decent bonded) hunting bullet with a bc near .500 that will work in a 7 or 8 twist. But they haven't been developed yet, at least not by the large bullet manufacturers.

No way I'll get to 48.
Not happening.
But I like to know where the top is.
Well I found it.
I'm thinking I should be able to operate at 4100 or at least in that range.
Thinking as the temps drop so will the feet per second.
Time will tell what lower temps will give me.
Now I'll see if I can put some groups together.
Make some more cases.
I'm liken the way the Hawk Hill barrel cleans up.

Notice an exit wound in the hind quarter, full length penetration, Not sure you could capture either load in a bull elk

46.3g Reloader 17
55g TTSX -.050 off.
.256 neck . .251 loaded round diameter on neck.
CCI BR2.
Lapua 243 Win case.

Three rounds fired.
Low 4154
High 4164
Diff. 10
Avg. 4157
SD. 5

I wish I could say it shot well but it didn't show me much as while monkeying around with it I had taken it apart.when I put it back together I had the magazine box pinched... That's bad juju.
Only 22 rounds fired so far.

I feel your pain, both of mine were 14" and only one remains(though I'm sure the other barrel is somewhere). Pass the 7" 224 Kreed and hold The Fluff. Hint................(grin)
Posted By: TrueGrit Re: 22/243 Middlestead - 10/17/22
The 22 - 243 or 22 - 243ai would be me if I thought I needed more than a .223ai. The longer neck of the Middlestead is interesting but I've been hooked on the .243 for close to 50 years, and haven't seen any reason to give up on it.

The 55g TTSX just wasn't shooting very well .
I'm thinking one of the reasons is because the rental reamer has a very short free bore.
Called the guy at Hammer bullets. Gave him the story and he recommended the 52g Hammer Hunter. At .020 off.
First time out.

For those interested the Hawk Hill barrel seems to be first rate.
It cleans up pretty quick .
I've been keeping up with thorough flush and thorough clean. Stuff works.

This stocky's stock is interesting.
I got because I could .
Don't mind the shape of it at all .
But it's got a marshmallow rubbery butt pad that drives me nuts .
This gun is not in its final configuration
Going to try to limp it through this season as a proof of performance type of thing.
From there will see.
