... the more it sounds like it's very similar to my 375/350 Wildcat. No longer have a chronograph, but have one available to me next trip to the range. I've settled on 325gr Speer Cor-Loc and Barnes TSX bullets on top of IMR4064. No dangerous game intended, a Nilgai trip and hopefully a couple more moose hunts are on the radar. The little rifle shoots very well with the bullets/powder chosen, but I need to add some grip to the wrist of the stock. It's uncheckered and smooth and the trigger guard hits my knuckle on the middle finger and it hurts! Lol! Don't intend to even try to make it a bigger 375, I like it just the way it is.
Which would make it nearly identical to the 375 Whelen. I believe the 376 Steyr is larger. One source says it's the 9.3x64mm Brenneke necked up. I've always looked at the 376 Steyr and thought what a neat looking cartridge. Never any complaints and only raves from those who use it
9.3 x 64 Brenneke necked up but length reduced from 64mm to 60mm to fit in a Steyr action with the shoulder pushed back.
I picked up some new 376 Steyr Hornady cases last year. I always liked something different. Have a Model 50 FN action that shouldn't be too hard to make it fit to. Hoping to fall into a decent .375 barrel or may have an old Krieger .308 rebored.
I like different stuff too, kinda why I got this thing. I know that with sticking with 235gr bullets, it's not far from the parent case, 350 Rem Mag. But it is different and I really like this rifle, so....

I put a 1-4x20 Leupold heavy duplex scope on it, but thinking I'd like a little more magnification. Maybe a 1.75-6 heavy duplex, if I can find one. Really hoping to have some woods/field pictures from using it this fall.

I've built more than a few .376's and several 9,3x64's. Less modification required on that FN50 than on a milsurp. Used to buy up take off CZ550 Safari barrels, and repurposed them for the 376 Steyr.
I had this one made up on a Mark X that started life as an '06. Specs are:

McGowen #5 contour cut to 20 1/2"

Robar NP3 finish

NECG H&H style irons

Bell & Carlson Medalist dipped in "Reaper Black" "Skull-flage

Leupold Fire-Dot 2-7x

Warner QD mounts (NP3)

I've primarily loaded the discontinued Hornady 270gr RN in it.

I've had different rifles that had the habit of rapping my trigger finger. My 375 Whelen AI doesn't do that. I think the wrist has something to do with it, but I could be wrong. Weight or lack of may be the biggest issue.

Two rifles that stand out in my foggy memory: my 350 RM 600 with an aluminum floor plate had that habit until I learned how to hold it. My light weight 45-70 Marlin has that habit too and no matter how I hold it.

Do you mean the 235 grain Speer? I'm not aware of a 325 grain Speer for the .375" diameter. Just checking.

The idea of a milder .375 cartridge is appealing. Rather than seek one out, I do just download my 375 H&H when I want less suds.

Someone mentioned the discontinued 270 grain Round Nose soft point. I sure liked that bullet! It shot very well from my 375. I've stayed with the 260 grain Nosler Accubond for my bear hunting 375 bullet and it's done really well, both for accuracy and results on game.

Re the scope - I've got the 1.5-5x Leupold, but I've had a 2-7x on the rifle, and that worked out really well. A 375 can easily be effective at 300 & 400 yards. A bit more magnification in that case isn't a bad thing.

Enjoying this thread!

Very useful looking rifle!

Thanks for posting that.

Yes, 235gr, as posted in my first post (went back and corrected my error in my subsequent post). Every once in a while, this damned dyslexia kicks in! Wouldn't mind finding a 2-7 Fire-Dot either... As far as distances, I know my rifles will outshoot me every day! Lol!

I haven't shot game with the 235 Speer, but a good buddy of mine used his 375 H&H for bear, mule deer & elk and relied on that bullet a lot. Said it caused a lot of damage and killed quickly. I don't think that he was running them at max velocity either.

Thanks Guy. I'm pushing them a little less than the info I was given, want to see how the rifle liked them before adding more, but haven't chronographed them yet. But I really like the accuracy I'm getting with them where they're at. Take care...
I've tried holding it differently, nothing works so far. I have bigger hands and the middle knuckle on my middle finger sure takes a pounding from the trigger guard. I'm either going to checker the wrist area or wrap something around it for some grip.

It's just too smooth and not a lot of room between the pistol grip and the trigger guard.

Also going to wear some leather shooting gloves next time out with it and see how that works.
Would an 18" barrel be sufficient for the 376 without blowing your hat off or is 20" the minimum? I've considered doing a Mannlicher full stock and think the shorter barrel would handle and look better.
It's a 20" barrel on this 375/350. I don't notice the bark shooting it, but people around me sure do! I get comments every trip to the range with it.
I have used mostly the 260 accubond ,however I have a very accurate load that is a hammer. 300gr Hornady RN . 1 load is 2348fps with Tac
and the other is 2418 also with Tac.
My son has a Styer with 19 inch barrel doesn't seem to give up much against my 21inch gun. Kills black bear like lightening.
Hadn't thought about TAC, I have a bunch of TAC....
I compare loads for the 376, 375 Whelen and the 375 Whelen AI and go from there. Have to start looking at loads using TAC powder.
It's a shame that it isn't one of the chamberings for the new Mauser 98's.
Mine. The original

What’s the barrel length on that?
20”. Long forearm makes it look shorter
