Is this an Echols pattern McMillan stock? I've never handled an Echols stock but sure looks McMillan to me and the lines look like pictures I've seen of the Echols pattern. Thanks.

Or maybe a Rimrock? The more I look at it, I think maybe its a Rimrock.

It’s a McMillan G&H pattern; long discontinued.

This is an Echols legend stock.

Good to know. Not sure I remember McMillan doing that pattern. Kind of glad it’s not a Rimrock.I’ve handled a couple of original G&H rifles but don’t remember the stocks.

That one has been on there for some time. I've thought about it numerous times. Let us know how it is when you get it.

Yep.

I’ll be curious as well. I suspect it’s well done.

Should be great. Looks like a good one. DMD, if you bought it, keep us posted. Thanks.. As for the stock, it's not an Echols, but still nice. Looks like it has more drop at the comb than an Echols.

It is on the way. Wondering how I will like the G&H pattern stock. I felt like at that price I was paying for the late 1940s action converted to a magnum and the McMillan stock. Will keep ya'll up-to-date.

Looks like a very nice rifle. I think you did well on the price tag. You couldn't have one built for that price. When I buy one like this, I always take it apart in my mind and price everything out. If it looks like all the parts add up to more than the asking price, I'll buy it. How many 338wm's do you have? That is my favorite elk hunting cartridge... Hopefully they glass bedded it really well and it's a tack driver...

If you don’t like it, you could probably get them to swap you for this brown stocked p 64 338 they just listed. laugh

That puppy has been on there awhile, had an eye on it. But a member on the fire has a certain .280 I’m hungering for. I couldn’t tell if that rifle has been coated or not. Looks pretty clean!
Posted By: AKwolverine Re: Echols Stock - 01/30/23
Definitely coated.

And you are correct; been around a while.

Nice rifle. Looks like it's been reblued and the crown touched up. Probably a great shooter. Rifling looks great at the muzzle end. Seller says rifling in the bore looks great as well. I'll be watching that one, to see what it sells for. The one DMD bought looks like it's definitely been coated. Probably cerakote. Nice rifle though. The Brown would probably mitigate recoil a little better than the Mcmillan, but both rifles are still very nice. I'd be happy with either one.

That’s an early 338 Win I think. High 300k on it from what I can tell. I think mines a 458xxx.

The McMillan G&H stock is really nice! A buddy of mine ordered one a few years ago(like 20 years ago😁) for his Model 70 before they discontinued that pattern.

I remember handling it and thinking it was really slick!

I own 2 Echols Legend stocks myself and they are great stocks!
I believe the G&H is very similar….maybe a little more narrow in the forend and grip than the Echols.

I think you’ll be pleased.

Thank you, Lefty. That's great to know. Hopefully, will be able to pick it up next week and see for myself.

That should be a very useful rifle! Looking forward to seeing what you think of it.

Has anyone tried to order a stock from Echols lately?

I don't have either, but the more open grip in the Legend is much more to my taste than the more closed grip on the G&H.

I'd had a Dakota & that was about perfect in that respect, along with the Remington Custom Shop KS stocks.

Picked up the rifle today and really like it. The length of pull is a little longer than I like but the stock otherwise fits really well and the grip doesn't seem too closed to me at all.

The finish is blue and is much like the finish that I've had Roy Bedeaux put on several rifles. He goes over them with a fine bead blast and then puts them in a lathe and goes over the bead blast with a wire brush and then does a caustic hot blue job on the rifle. It makes an attractive, matte finish that looks a little like rust blue but not quite. It appears this rifle has a similar finish.

It's a sweet rifle, for sure. I like it.
