I have a stainless 700 SA that currently is a 243. It does not get used a whole lot. I think it will be my next donor for a build but what should I build???

I already have a 7mm-08, 338FED, 223 (7 twist) and a 30-06. I was thinking one of the more modern cartridges like a 6mm Creed or have another 338Fed built. Hmm... I wonder if anyone has necked up the Creed case to .338? What are some other ideas?

260 Remington

If you go 223 you will need to do a bolt swap.

Would a 6mm Creedmoor get more use than a 243?? Seems like the long way around the block for same unless you're going to be shooting the long heavies from the Creedmoor.

For me it would be a 22 Creedmoor if changing anything.

260 or 260AI, 1:8" with a Wyatt box.

Add me to the .22 Creed list. It can do everything the .243 can do if you twist and throat it right and feed it a steady diet of 88 grain ELDMs.

If you are going to build a "duplicate" then my answer is build a 7-08AI. Twist it fast and throat it to shoot the 160 class bullets. Mine will push the 162 grain ELD-X bullets to 2800 out of a 20" barrel.

If I had a spare short 700, and wanted to build a hunting rifle, I would build a 6.5 Creedmoor. I was in the local Bass Pro the other day and there was more 6.5 CM ammo than any other except for 223 and 308. There was no 260. GD

22 Creed or 22 GT would be my vote.

Depends on your use. I made a 220 swift on a Rem 700. SA.

This.

As much as I like the 6 creedmoor if you don’t use the 243 I can’t see another 6mm blowing your skirt up. That said would you like it better with a different stock scope barrel length suppressor? Maybe it’s the rifle you don’t care for not the 243 part? Just a thought.

I can’t think of a single reason to chamber a 260 or 260AI starting from scratch unless you already had a lot of good new brass and or a high quality set of dies. I have a 260 but bought a nice ctr used and already had 100 pieces of lapua brass. I don’t own a 6.5 creedmoor but it’s a no brainer if someone is debating it and a 260.

I’m with Scott though 22 creed or gt. I will go creedmoor when my 22-250AI gives up because I keep finding 6mm creedmoor brass ive apparently ordered.

6GT. Factory ammo...brass...dies. My next purchase will be 6GT and 100 rounds of factory Hornady ammo to get me started.

Isn’t the 22 Creed nothing more than a 22-250 AI but with the Creed shoulder angle?
Posted By: 10gaugemag Re: What to build... - 02/05/23
Pretty much.

But with the Creedmoor there is no fireform needed.

450 bushmaster. .473 bolt face. You have the rest covered. Just a thought

What's your use case and do you reload?

I reload almost exclusively unless brass is hard to find like with my 338Fed. I have no specific use as I have pretty much everything covered for North American hunting. It would mostly get used for whitetails in GA and PA. The 450 Bushmaster sounds intriguing.

.358 Winchester or 9.3 B-S.

As I get older, I like recoil less and the ability to shoot more during a range session. That steers me more towards the smaller calibers. If not invested in a 6 Creed, the 6 GT would be worth a look.

Also, I've found that a do all rig simply doesn't exist. I'm more inclined to grab the lighter rig when hunting and the heavier contoured barrel when at the range. Rifles are like golf clubs, you can't drive with a putter and be effective.

The 6 BR or something on that case can be fun. Have a 25 BR AI. Scary accurate. I let kids and women use it. Has been deadly. Low muzzle blast and no recoil to speak of. Everyone has tried it wants it.

What are the particulars of the existing rifles? Be specific, including stock, mounting system and optic. Hint.

If making 338 Fed brass stumps you,it's uphill both ways and a slippery slope. Hint............

This. Love my 6BR's. Very easy to load for and consistent....

6mm/22-250. Almost a 243, feeds better, more efficient, easy to load, great barrel life, plenty of room in the magazine. Great cartridge.

I've never had a 243 Win bobble, whether Self Shucker,Trombone,Lever or Turnbolt and a 6-250 is simply fhuqking STUPID. Hint..................

Or a 6mm Creedmoor for the easy button.

240NMC or 6XC. 105-108gr bullets at 2900-3000fps. Been running a 240NMC for 15 years out to 1200yards. Uses 22-250 brass and fire forming loads shoot as accurately as formed. The Creedmore is the “new” version of the old song.
