Does anyone have a McMillan stock on a Winchester pre- 64 Model 70 they could post a picture of? Any experiences with the various styles of stock? I'm looking at their standard Model 70 stock with the monte- carlo comb as my foul weather stock for my Model 70.

My experience is with the current Winchester Classics, which do not differ much from the pre-64. I do not care for the Winchester patterns that McMillan uses. They have clunky lines, or no checkering, or too much drop for me (if I was using open sights my thoughts might be different). But I really like a winchester in their Compact pattern, which is not shown on their website. It is the same pattern as the EDGE, but in standard construction.

About a month ago I was talking to McMillan and they were planning on bringing out a new classic pattern to replace their G&H model. You might call Lynn and she what she knows about it.

Mine is a Classic from Rick Bin on a .30-06 featherweight bought from Rick Bin painted and bedded by Rick Bin, with a VXIII 2.5-8x36 bought from Rick Bin mounted in some Talley steel QD's bought, well, you get the picture. He did me right for my first pre-64 and first .30-06. The ugly pool table cover doesn't help so I need to take some good pics outside this year...

Are the stocks set up for the rear sight band on the pre-64s? It looks like you guys all have rebarrels there.

I went with a Brown Precision because I was told I couldn't get one to fit the factory barrel...

Totally agree......the Compact / Edge is the only one I'd use other than the G&H. I have an Edge ordered that I'm waiting on now.

Putting a plastic stock on a classy pre-64 mod 70 is like spray painting a Dusenberg with camo paint.

I thought so as well till I did it.Feels great looks good and no more soaking wet and cracking wood stocks in the rain and I have more pre 64 guns than most.

I'm with 284 on this one; my pre-64 has a decent original stock that someone cut and put a pad on decades ago, it will go in a bin when the rain starts to pour here in Oregon. Keeping metal sealed against rain is much easier than sealing wood. It can be done but I'd rather not do it...

I totally agree! Don't get me wrong, plastic stocks have their place but a Pre '64 is NOT one of them.

Hunterbug: I will sorta,very respectfully disagree with you guys on the plastic stock/pre64 combo.While I understand where you are all coming from,I have put a few in fiberglass and they have been,by and large, the best hunting rifles I've owned.I recently put a 30/06 FW in a Bansner stock that went from being a so-so shooter to an absolut tack driver; I could have bedded the original stock but rather than mess with a wood stock,the Bansner made more sense.I have a number of wood pre64's but the ones that go hunting, with a few exceptions, are the synthetics.

Not all are candidates for this treatment;the real cherries stay in wood,if they shoot.I am not a collector,and am not in this for posterity.But if you think they are good in wood, wait till you see 'em shoot in fiberglass!

With true, 100% original, collector-grade pre-64 Model 70s (and I've owned over 100 of them) I agree that plastic stocks are out.

But if you take an altered or exterior-worn specimen, an aftermarket plastic stock won't hunt anything. In fact, it'll be of great benefit in every area but blessed-tradition and cosmetics.

I've long felt that the best way to fundamentally improve a pre-64 Model 70 is to find a worn specimen with a sound action, pull the stock and barrel, blueprint that action, screw in a modern, quality custom barrel, then screw the whole thing into a plastic stock.

Then you've got the best of all worlds.........

I have ten near mint P-64s from a .243 FWT through a pair of .270FWTS, a .30-06 FWT, a .264 Westerner, four .338 Alaskans and a .375H&H Alaskan. These are from 95-98% original metal finish, except one .270FWT.

They ALL wear "plastic" except for my favourite .338 and near pristine spare .270 AND there are Micky Edge blanks currently on order for those two. P-64s, of which I have had about three dozen, including an Al Biesen .270, are among the best HUNTING rifles ever made and I use mine, live in wet B.C., so, "plastic" works for me!

I might put my original Brno 21H "roundbolt" re-chambered in .280 Rem. from 7x57 into a "plastic" stock as well, man, what a barbarian I am, eh?

Mine's the original barrel. FWIW.

Allen: Ditto that; but I am growing a bit sentimental these days. I set up what I need and leave the rest original, telling myself they are "spares" in case I wear out the others..Ha!, fat chance!

This is my Mod 70 pre 64 .270, blue printed, Douglas turned to lighter contour, 1.75X6 Leupold, Weaver 4 screw rings, Redfield flip-up peep, weighs 7 1/8#. on my scale with the walnut stock, and just a little more maybe 1/4# with the McMillan Which I got from Rick, I forget which style it is maybe GH or Super Grade, I had to move the rear screw hole and rework the rear tang area to make it fit, then sent it back to Rick for paint job, and yes it shoots very well with the light barrel .36 inch for 3 shots 130 gr Speer,.563 with 150 gr. NP the last time to the range 3 130 NP & 3 150 gr NP went into .85 inch. thats in the French stock and it shoots even better in the McMillan. I think it's a keeper.

OlBlue: Beautiful rifle! I've got a piece of California English I'm going to send to the Biesen's to be carved to their pattern this summer, then probably a McSwirly from McMillan for the wet weather months.
