I got one of the last M40A1 stocks but alas it has no bottom metal. Can I bed factory metal or?? I really don't want to spend $150 or more metal.
Idea's please.

Dave
I bought, from McM, the bottom metal for an M40A1. Had it fitted to a Remington 700 VSFS. Also had the magazine box modified to take 5 rds. I'm very happy with all of it. Since it's basically an M70 FP & TG, it looks good too.
Something to consider.
Otherwise, you'd have to see how the stock 700 bottom metal will match up and glass it in. E
Dave, check e-bay
McMillan said to call GAP. Didn't find anything on ebay.

What do they do to make M70 metal fit a 700?

Dave
I don't think they fit the M70 to the Remington inletted stock. I think they inlet the stock to accept M70-type bottom metal. The M40A1 bottom metal is set up with a separate trigger guard using two action screws (much like an ADL). The TG has a release on its front (like the Williams) where the bottom metal latches. The BM is held to the stock using the front action screw and the latch on the TG.

I'd be willing to bet a Williams BM/TG set up would come close to fitting and would be more period-specific than the factory Remington BDL offering.
Dave,

You have to shorten and reshape the Winchester floorplate. It isn't all that tough, it just takes time and know-how. I imagine that the guys at GA could knock it out pretty quick, but I'd be surprised if they took on such a small job without doing a complete install on the stock. I know I wouldn't do it.

Thanks CAS that's what I was wondering. How M70 metal was fitting a M700.

Dave
DaveH, my stock from this batch came sans floorplate. I did get a TG though.

Here is a link to a post George has talking about the bottom metal. I am just going to order a floorplate from Williams and do it myself.
