Picked up a severely bubba'd and worn out No. 1 Mk. III* a while back and I'm in process of turning it into a nice 7x57R rifle. Rebarreled it and fitted it with some Boyds wood so far, still on the agenda is removing what's left of the charger bridge, fitting it with some sights, reshaping the wood (at a minimum I'm going to reprofile the grip and either slim up and shorten the forend or place do something a little european with it), bed the forend, and applying a finish to the wood and the metal. Headspaced off the shoulder to hopefully avoid the issues the Lees usually have with brass life.

lot's of shank left so you can install it on another action. Good luck but there can be lots o frustrations with the old No. 1. Head separations at the top of the list.

A lot of the issues with head separation on those have to do with the looser chambers inherent to military 303 rifles. I headspaced this one off the shoulder like a regular 7x57 to avoid that issue.

Put a little more work into it today. Finished the reshaping on the buttstock, applied BLO, and shortened/crowned the barrel at 22.5 inches. Likely will end up having the metal ceracoated to a color similar to the suncorite the British used as there are a couple machine marks that didn't polish out on the barrel and will show up if blued. Have yet to decide how I'm doing the forend, whether schnabel, slimming like the Lee speed, or leaving it chunky and grafting another wood onto the tip. Shaping up well however.

It would be nice to be able to see a picture of this rifle....all I get is "This content is no longer available."

That's mildly disappointing. I'll have to get around to actually uploading the pictures to imager then, instead of being lazy and trying to do it the way I've been doing it

I'll look forward to it. I've been working on a similar project but leaving it in 303. Seems like it is going to be a continuing project for me. I just keep seeing things I want to change.

Imgur is fighting me so I'll have to figure out another photo hosting of some sort.

Looks good, was that the basic walnut there or did you get fancy?

Here are photos. Reshaped the boyds stock to flatten the wrist to comb joint, similar to prewar sporters, and then added a maple? tip made from leftovers from the 88/05 stock I'm working on to the forend while shortening it a bit. Only have one coat of blo on it currently, but will probably get up to 4-5.

That’s just the plain walnut. I shortened and slimmed the forearm a little. The barrel now has a barrel band swivel on it. The front sight base is from a 1903 Springfield with a bead sight. Rear sight is a Williams peep. I haven’t decided to take off the stripper clip guide yet, but that will probably go next.

After looking at yours, the clip guide has to go. It makes a much slimmer looking action.

I like your sight combo, was already looking into a Lyman rear but hadn't decided on a front yet. Think I'll give it a look see
