I've been offered a trade on a NIB stainless model 7 in 260. Can the model 7 action accept the 6.5X284?
I would think so, but thought I'd ask...
The box is the same as a Model 700 (but you knew that). It will work, but you will have to have it throated accordingly and may have to stay away from the longer VLDs, lest the ogive be seated into the neck.
JimF has one on a 600 but I am not sure if he had a standard or extended box on it. I think regular hunting bullets would work fine like CAS said. It has been something I have contemplated for a while, just have never pulled the trigger on it, so to speak.
Isn't the actual "opening" of the action a little larger on the 7 than the SA 700? Seems that I read that somewhere around here.
May want to look at a Wyatt's mag box too.

Yes, but the 20" barrel on a Remington 7 might be a little short of optimal for the 6.5-284. As much as I like the 6.5-284, out to 250+/- yards there isn't any meaningful difference in field performance when compared to the plain vanilla 260, at least that I can see.

The cheapest way to improve the Remington 7 SS in 260 is to screw on a 700 LSS MR or 700 Ti 22" stainless barrel in 260 and install either a 7 laminated or 673 laminated stock.

That is all correct info. It is std length magazine box with a 21" barrel. As CAS stated, there is no issue with bullets up to 140 gr. NP and maybe beyond. I have used mostly lighter bullets in the 120-129 gr. range in mine as the whole mess has a wet weight of 4lb. 14.5 oz and can slap you a bit. The 21" barrel delivered velocities in excess of what we usually see quoted for the .260 in 24" tubes. I think that sometime we worry waaaay too much about an inch of barrel plus or minus.
FWIW....I have a Wyatts box on a .284 win that is possibly the best light rifle I have ever owned. Given the bullets/powders that I use, I probably would not do that again but YMMV on that one.
Having said allllll that "stuff" I think the .260 is pretty good just the way it is and unless there is an issue with the chamber, I just don't see much need to punch it out or "improve it.

My fixation with longer barrels on the Remington 7s has more to do with improving the balance and pointability of the rifle then it does for velocity. I often use the Remington 7 and 673 laminated stocks on my Remington 7s and they are a little heavier than some other stocks, so the slightly longer barrel balances out the rifles more to my taste.
FWIW, my fastest of 4 6.5-284s has the shortest barrel. It is a 22" Winchester/USRA 70 Fwt rechambered from 6.5x55 to 6.5-284. The other 6.5-284s have 24" barrel from good after-market barrel makers, but just aren't quite as fast with the same loads. It does have the longer 6.5x55 throat, as it was 1 of the 1986 vintage rifles intended for the European market.
