I am beginning to plan my next rifle, and want a short lightweight (i.e. 7 1/2lbs. all up) "brush" gun, and am really having trouble deciding between the 358 win or the 350 rem mag. I am by no means recoil shy, but want a gun that I can readily move onto a second or third shot with, and nobody I know has a 350 rem mag. So onto the big question, which caliber is preferred by those of you who have hunted with both?
Find Mtn Hunters 350 rem mag, dupe it and you're golden.

Dober
I haven't hunted with both, but do have a .358 Win made up on a MRC 1999 action with a 21-inch barrel. For a brush gun, or for ranges out to about 200 yards, I think it's fine. I use 200 gr Hornady spire points, 200 gr TSx or 225 Partitions in mine. I get a bit over 2500 FPS with the 225 gr bullet. With a MacMillan Edge stock and a Leupold compact scope, it goes right about 7 pounds.

350 mag hands down. by far the handiest sledgehammer in the forest...... if you can find a classic just dump it in an edge or bansner and shoot it.... the clssics are one slick platform.....

Both are good but I personally would prefer the 350 Magnum as it just has more soup!

I have hunted Vermont with a .358 Winchester since 1966. I have never owned a 350 RM.

The 358 I use most is a 99F and I have taken deer with it in VT, ME, PA and NY. I could argue that anymore recoil than a 358 would make it more difficult for a second shot but to each his own.

A 99F weighs 7.75 lbs with a 2-7.

I have 358's in 99's, a MS full stock carbine and a M70 Featherweight. The 99F is by far, in my estimation, the best woods rifle of those.

Here is the MS I got at the Autumn Gun Works. Oh boy was it expensive! Its kind of thick in the middle too. I prefer the Brno 22f's over this model MS. Had to have it though as its a .358!

The 350 Mag will give you 2800 fps in a 22 inch barrel with a 200 grain Hornady or Core Lokt.

You have to see this combo thump stuff to beleve it,find one of the Rugers or Remingtons in this and you are so good to go for almost anything.

Ummm....Don't think the $7000 model 70 is in my price range, and even if it was, I would be scared to hunt with a piece of history in that kind of condition. It would make a nice showpiece though. I'm kind of partial to the 358 that Moses just sold in the classifieds, that was a beauty! It looked very similar to my 338-06, and I may have to duplicate that, as soon as I choose which caliber.

.....................In my Lyman manual and from the same barrel lengths, the 200 grainers as the maximum velocities listed for both cartridges are within 100 fps of each other, with the 350 Rem Mag owning the slight advantage.

For a brush hunting cartridge to use for short to moderate ranges, I see no real or significant advantage in the performance dept that one cartridge would have over the other. So the key would be to find the rifle that best suites your niche of a short, handy, extremely manuverable, that you can as you say, "can readily move!"

I don`t own a 358, but I do own the rifle that was chambered in a 358 Win from Ruger.

For a bolt action, assuming you`re looking for a bolt, that imo would best suite your needs, you simply cannot beat the Ruger Frontier compact. From personal experience (and I`ve handled ALOT of bolt rifles), there is no faster, manuverable or better handling bolt rifle on the planet which is as ideal for the brush. Mine happens to be chambered in the 300 WSM which Ruger discontinued.

Ruger also did chamber that same rifle in the 358 Win with the target grey stainless barrel. I`ve recently seen some NIB on Gunbroker. Some may probably still be available. My shooting and hunting friend happens to also have one chambered in the 338 Federal, with numerous hogs, 2 black bear and a bull moose to his rifle`s credit.

We go hog hunting together and very often we`re in heavy brushy areas, which is where these little carbines really excel. Sling them on your shoulder, the muzzle is well below the top of your head. Carry them by the pistol grip pointed to the ground, the muzzle is well above the ground. They balance well and really pack a punch. As my own 300 has shown and proved vs 24" 300 WSMs, the 16.5" barrels lose only between 4.2% to 4.5% in velocity to the 24" barrels in the same cartridge shooting the same ammo or reloads.

Along with using a conventional scope, the Frontier also has a scout mount should you wish to mount a scout scope. I do both. The scout mount alone also helps to stabilize the shorter barrel for free hand shooting. As opposed to the new Ruger Hawkeye compacts, the Frontiers use heavier barrels which further helps for muzzle stability.

Even for my size at 6'3" 240 lbs, the Ruger Frontier is still not at all too small. It`s 35.5" of OAL and 12.5" LOP is what makes it a great handling, very fast bolt rifle and ideal in the brush.

The 350 rem mag can be loaded down to 358 win levels, the reverse isn't possible.

I'm pretty happy with my ruger 350 rem mag, recoil is as much as I want in a reasonable weight rifle, and the accuracy is steller. With 225's @ 2700 fps its an honest 300 yd rifle.

Then again the 358 win with 225's @ 2500 fps and a 200 yd zero is an honest 250 yd gun.

Can't go wrong with either. As far as follow up shots, practice.

350 is just the best for me. rem. 600 brown pre. stock, leu-1.5 to 5 on top. nosler 225gr. does it all!!!!!!

I see your in Vermont. So my question is, what are you planning to hunt with it?

If deer and black bear only, or even an off chance moose, I can't see needing the extra powder capacity of the .350 mag.

While neither are ideal cross canyon strafing tools. Both are stellar woods rounds and as good as the man behind the rifle to 300 yards or so.

The .358 case is dirt simple and inexpensive to make. Most dies have tapered expander balls to go from .30 to .35 in one simple pass.
IMO, the Winchester offering has plenty of power with less recoil and muzzle blast than the .350 and possibly one more round in the magazine.

I used the Sierra 225gr bt for practice and deer size game and the 225gr Nosler partition for elk.

Here she is at work. A SAKO rebore carbine w/20" tube.

A light rifle in 358 would keep the recoil down, but so would light loading the Three Fitty. I went with a heavier (MRC & 22" #3)350 RM & like it a lot, but I would not want to touch off a full power 250 grain Partition in a lighter rifle! Good luck with your new build.

I always thought a .350 Remington mag in a double rifle would be quite the ticket.

Humm a .350 Rigby. What case would that be based on? I'm familiar with the .40 caliber Rigby's but not the .35 caliber Rigby's.
Posted By: 458 Lott Re: 358 win or 350 rem mag? - 10/26/09
The 350 rigby is a unique case, but it can be formed by turning the belt off of a 375 H&H case, turning down the rim, cutting a deeper extractor groove, and fl sizing the case to set the shoulder back, then trim to length. Bertram makes 350 rigby brass but it's soft, Hornbear supposedly does but I never found anyone that had it in stock. Forming cases from H&H hulls ia a PITA, but they work fairly well. The 350 rigby pre-dated the 375 H&H by 2 years.

Rimmed would be easier as all you'd need to do would be run a 375 flanged case into the fl sizer.

Somewhere I have a picture of the 350 rem mag, 35 ai whelen and 350 rigby lined up. I sold my 350 rigby this summer, the 350 rem mag is a much better balanced package, lighter gun and all I had to do was give up 25 gr of bullet for the same velocity and sub moa accuracy.

TB-

I have both the 350 and 358 and like them both. I'd say the 358 gets hunted a bit more and it's likely because of the package - it resides in a Brown Pounder with 22" tube, so it's likely in your 7.5 all-up weight range. I don't know what else is in your stable but like has been mentioned previously, you can load the 350 down to 358 but not vice versa - though not sure why you'd want to load it down. I'd not rule out picking up a M7 KS in 350 for a rig very much like you're describing.

Like Dober mentioned, your blueprint could pretty much start and end with MtnHntr's 350. Of course, you could build a Whelen too. cool

No question 350 Rem Mag. I have owned both and the 350 gets 150 fps+ more in the same barrel length. This makes a difference on bullet expansion.

My present 350 is in a 660. I owned a 600 too but I liked the 660 better. Really great cartridge. Very efficient.

I have hunted with both. I used to hunt with an older steel receiver BLR in 358 Win. Now, I use a Ruger 77 in 350 Rem Mag. This may sound strange (given what I had and what I now use) but given the parameters that you've stated, I think a 358 Win. would be ideal. It accomplishes virtually the same thing as the 350 Mag but with less powder and muzzle blast within the short to medium range category. I also found the Winchester 200 gr Silvertip load for the 358 Win. to be much more accurate in the BLR than the Remington 350 Mag 200 gr load in my Ruger. Of course, if you don't reload you'll never realize the best that either cartridge offers, not to mention that either one in factory ammo is relatively hard to find and costly.

I sold my BLR because someone offered me considerably more $ than it cost me. So, when the 35 caliber bug bit me again years later, I opted for the Ruger 350 Mag, since it was easy for me to obtain at Wally World of all places. Though I really like my 350 Mag, I have to admit that everything I've taken with the 350, I could have just as easily gotten with the 358 Win. I must also state that I hunt only deer and hogs.
Not to confuse things but the bottom line is what some of the others have stated about either caliber being ok for what you want. So, it's nice to know that you cannot make a bad decision. Good luck.
Posted By: Klikitarik Re: 358 win or 350 rem mag? - 10/27/09
In a Ruger (or Winchester), I'd opt for the 350. The 358 is a perfect partner for the Remington tube bolt. (The 358 has been plenty adequate at farther than "they" say it should be. I've got a Norma if I need more.)

You've piqued my curiousity, since I've never noticed either a 150 or 220-gn bullet in .35 caliber... What are you using??

Anyway, can't speak to the .350 but my 20" M7 .358 is a very cool package. I'd hunt anything up to elk with it, happily, and don't really see a "need" to go to a .350, with the downside that comes with... .358 flat whacks stuff, and with the 225 Partition @ 2500 fps, it's a bona-fide 400-yard gun with a quick spin of a turret...

But, what's "need" got to do with it, right?

I had an XP in 350 RM. Too much recoil so I traded it off. I'm getting a 99 rebored to 358 and am searching for a Savage barrel in 350 RM.
My philosophy: Why decide when you can have both grin
For speed of a follow up shot I don't think you can beat a Sav 99 or a Rem 7600 in 358.

TB-

It appears that most respondees favor the .350 Rem over the .358 Win. This doesn't surprise me, as with most Americans: "If a little is good, then more is better!"
It seems that many folks have not heard of the concept that "Sometimes less is more..."

I currently own four .358 Win's and have owned three or four others that I have sold... (Most regretably) frown tho' having hunted with a couple of them, I have never taken game with them. frown
I also have owned three; .350 Rem Mags. Only one I still own... A Remington M-Seven Custom KS. I have taken game with two of them. (One deer at about 80 yds and one at just over 100) I can't imagine that a .358 wouldn't have worked just as well. smile

Thus my answer: Build both! Work with both at the range, and hunt with both. I would wager that after having done that, when the time comes to head for the hill, you'll end up carrying the .358 more often than not. grin

Another thing, if it's important to you... (And It's not to me)... You get one more round in the belly with the .358...

And finally: You only have to please yourself, not matter what others may say. grin

I'm with GrassHoppa! Both are nice. Seriously, of all the Magnums, I have owned a very few, and the 350 was one, and it got sold when my buddy borrowed the 77 SS and HAMMERED (sorry JB, won't use 'like THOR'), a nice 10pt. the first time he used it, and he claimed it, since, near record class Elk, other deer, and many Hogs to it's list. Recoil not bad for a few to sight in and practice, always some 357 pistol bullets to load, down if you want, cheap too, and blast not piercing to the ears.

Mike, who's 'cut-rifled' you using?

225s at 2700 up to 300 Phil says? I thought my 338/06 slinging 225s at 2670 was good for 400 wink

So conservative!

The 35s are no frills serious game dumpers. If you don't do a DRT, there will be a trail that looks like the Red Sea to follow!

IIRC, when the .350 Rem. mag. came out, remington made three loads for the gun, a 150 gr. Core-loct, the more common 200 and 250 gr. loads. The 150 r. load got dropped early one as I recall but Remington did sell bullets in the 150 gr. size for a while after they were dropped, probably to dispose of inventory. I once bought about 800 of them for someone who wanted them and then backed out of the deal. Said he wanted 500 or more. Guess he waned them for freebies. I was only asking what I paid for them plus shipping so wasn't making a cent on the deal. I ended up selling most of them off to a guy who had a Contender in .357 Herret. He loved those bullets. I did keep a few for myself but never have gotten around to loading them. They alost look like a Hornady spire point bullet but they were made (?) by Remington according to the box they came in.

As I have very little use for any belted mags, I would go with the 358 Win. Brass is easier to come by, plus no animal never knew it was a bullet traveling 100 to 200 fps slower that killed him! Case in point, 338/06 AI vs 338 Win Mag. 30/06 vs 300 Win Mag, 284 Win vs 7mm Remington! Any 06 based cartridge will do for me, the extra velocity for the recoil is not a fair trade for me and mine!

Saying that a 358 doesn't have enought "oomph" and going to a 350RM would be like going to a 30/06 from a 308. Prolly won't get you a whole heck of a lot more for the effort.

I had a 20" Model Seven in 358Win for a time. The fellow I bought it from wanted it back, so back it went. I'm now getting together the parts for another, but on a 700 SA to replace the one I sold back. It's a good combo. You'll like it and I doubt you need more.

This is an email from an aquaintence back from Africa in 2003 on the .358:

Just back from a month in South Africa where I got about 18 days of hunting in. Had a hell of a hunt with our group of 6 taking 60 animals (granted 15 or so were warthogs & baboons) from Baboon to Giraffe. Just have to report on how impressed I am with my new "favorite" brush country/bushvelt hunting rifle. Took a new Win M70 classic featherweight in 7mm08 and sent it to Tim Carrick in NC 336-859-5273 to make me a "minature express rifle". What an awesome job he did too............. We used the factory action/stock and customized as follows:

21" med weight PacNor dlx barrel chambered in .358 Win.
Glassed the action and chamber
Full action/trigger job with 3# pull
NECG express sights
NECG barrel band fron swivel mt
Decellerator pad, 1"
Leupold QRW rings & bases
Leupold VX III 1.75x6 HDP

Project turned out even better than I had hoped. Rifle is just a smaller version of a Win M70 Express rifle. Shoots about anything you put in it well and kills game way out of proportion to it's size and recoil level (kicks about like an average 06 with 180gr loads).

Load I used most on this trip was the excellent Swift 250gr A-frame over 45 grains of Varget for an honest 2150FPS (I now know I can get up to 2275 out of this rifle now and still working my "ultimate load" combination). I shot Kudu, Blue Wildebeest, Zebra, Nyala, Warthog (8 actually), bushpig and baboon with this load. I also shot a black Wildebeest with a 225gr Barnes moly coated X over 46 grains of Varget. Everything except 2 baboons (a running shot and a offhand 150 yd shot) were one shot kills. I just can't get over how easy this rifle is to shoot and how well it puts down big tough game. Most shots gave full penetration and we only recovered 2 Swifts and as usual they were perfect and could be used in Swift advertising with perfect controlled expansion and 95%+ weight retention.

Everyone else in our group except my son used Swift A-frames exclusively and we didn't loose a single animal. My girlfriend used the 275gr A-frame in a .338 WM Sako compact hunter. Her one shot kill on a big Eland bull was further proof that this combination continues to work well. Just a lot more kick and blast for very little gain over the .358.
The other guys used .308 165gr, .30-06 180gr, 9.3x62 300gr (this is another great performer), .300 WSM 180gr and .375 300gr.. With this being my 4th trip to Africa using Swift A-frames I can conclude that they are 100% reliable on game. You recover very few bullets, but when you do they are examples of perfect controlled expansion. Ryan used factory Win Failsafes in his .375 to take Giraffe, Waterbuck and Zebra, all were one shot kills and no bullets were recovered, so this whole solid copper bullet thing seems to work well too.

I continue to be impressed with how hard African game is to kill. Often perfect hits with good bullets still resulted in the animal going up to 400 yds before going down. Most amazing was two big warthog boars, both shot thru both lungs. One took a 300gr 9.3x62 bullet and ran 150 yds like we had completely missed him. The other took a .412gr LBT out of the .480 Ruger and ran approx 300yds (not a drop of blood for the first 75yds either). Then my black Wildebeest which are supposed to be real hard to kill dropped in his tracks when hit by a 225gr Barnes X out of my .358!!!! Go figure..............

I have a .358 Win on a Model 660 action, with a 21" barrel thats a little heavier than most sporter barrels. It's a remarkably nice, short rifle - it shoots well, swings well and doesn't weigh more than I want it to. It's easy to handle in the thick stuff too. The manuals tell me I can get 2600 fps with a 200 grain bullet, juuust get 2500 fps with a 225 grain bullet, and get 2300+ with a 250. They also tell me that I have a 300 yard gun - if I sight in the 225 grain load to be 3" high @ 100 yards I'll be about 1/2" high @ 200 & 10" low at 300. It will still have close to 1700 ft-lbs of energy at 300, and plenty of bullet mass too. I've never taken a 300 yard shot in my life and maybe never will, but I can with this rifle. Mine has no recoil pad, so it becomes an issue at the bench after 10-20 rounds. I'll be adding a pad but for winter hunting I don't need one.
The numbers on the 350 mag are even better, but the 358 just doesn't leave me wanting for any more fps, and it doesn't really add much more useable range, so why take the recoil?
I like the idea of 338 Federal even more, as I'm fine with 200 & 225 grain bullets for everything, and 338's fly better than 35's. Might even get a little more velocity because people are reporting 2700+ fps (chrono'd) with the Federal Fusion 200's.

If I were doing this from scratch I would build a Model 7 or a Sako 75 in .358 or 338 Federal, and leave the 350 mag for somebody else.

Just my $.02
Cool discussion though!

Have had and used both the .358 and .350 in bolt Remy's, Love them both tremendously but when I needed some new project funds I sold the 350. There was just no need for the extra pop to accompish the same task. Can't go wrong with either choice, but I vote for the sexy .358

Not to drag up a thread more than a decade old, but I will soon have an XP-100 chambered in .350 Rem Mag with a 15" bull barrel on it in the centergrip stock configuration. I've got a lovely 190 gr. GC mold that should work well for it to load it down a bit, but would any of you with experience with the .350 Rem Mag have powder recommendations? The full-house loads have a LOT of powder to burn in a 15" barrel. I'm considering getting a Witt Machine muzzle brake for it, but I want to see how the recoil is before putting a brake on it, as they're ugly as sin, but I also know they work a treat, as I have one on my .357 Max Encore barrel that my 18 y/o daughter uses. I've got several hundred 180 gr. Speer Hot Cor bullets that I intend to use on Iowa whitetails. Any recommendations for the short barrel loads? Will I be better off on the faster end of the burn rate rather than something like H380 (of which I have an 8 pound jug) or RL 15 (of which I have a couple pounds). I've also got lots of faster burn rate options for loading it on the less brutal side, but on my bucket list is an elk hunt with a handgun, and I figured this would fit that bill quite beautifully when that day comes.

I have both. I've had my 600 350 Mag for over 50 years. I have had my 700 with 358 for a few years. I had a 358 BLR for maybe 20 years before that.

If I were going to hunt most anything in the lower 48 I think both would work. If I were going after Grizzly though, I'd go with the 350.

I really like my 350 and I like the 358. If I were to give one up??? I'd probably give up the 358, not sure.

All I've shot at game with the 350, I used 250 grain bullets. I suspect that lighter bullets would work well, I just have not tried them on game. As far as the 358 I've only used it on white tail and I have used 200 grain bullets. There definitely is a difference on recoil between these two loads.

You can easily make 358 brass out of cheap 308 brass - I do. I also have made 350 brass out of several magnums 7mm and 338 for instance, but I have a good supply of 350 brass.

I guess the argument for one or the other could be similar to the 308 vs. 30-06 except these two are both cartridges designed for short actions.
Regarding the 30-06 and the 308, I think with light bullets they are similar but with the heavier bullets the larger case comes into play.

There’s a 35 Remington and a 358 Winchester hiding in every 350 Mag. 😊

Get both. Add a 35 Whelen for when you cant get any 350 RemMag brass, & a 358 Norma just because.

depends on how fast and good you are with a bolt.where and what your hunting, also if there are grizz in the area.i have a 358 win i bought 30 years ago for thick country up close black bear hunting.only lever i own along with my 45-70.so be honest with yourself with what you handle quicker.if in open country go bolt in suitable caliber.i have several custom rifles.between 22 -250 and 416 remington.one of my favorites is my 35 whelen.also my lever guns had some modifications and action work done by brockmans gunsmithing years ago.best of luck with your choice.

Of the 2, I'd pick the 358 for most builds.

The 350 is a bit faster, but holds 2 less in the mag and kicks harder, and so far I have not found an animal or a scenario where the small increase in velocity would matter at all. And I have been hunting and guiding for over 1/2 a century.
The 358 is easily made from 308 Winchester and 308 brass (7.62 NATO) is easy to get and pretty cheep. (sometimes free)

350 Rem mag is hard to get and costly.

If you need more power than you can get from a 358 Win you need more then the small gain you get from a 350. if a 358 Win is not enough I'd step up to a 9.3X62 or a 375H&H.

Had both.
358 if I have to choose. Had a Ruger 77R 358 since 1983 until I gave in to selling it in 1995.
Had a Ruger 77 Mark II 350RM with pretty figure walnut stock.
It’s like choosing between Lynda Carter and Jessica Simpson, both are excellent!
If I have to choose, I love the 358 and always will
(Wanna buy some 350RM brass?) LOL!

IMHO... 375 Raptor... https://www.375raptor.com/load-data/

We have been doing load development for about 4-5 years now... Crazy Impressive stuff. Basically .35 Whelen performance on a .358W brass.

If you are not in a hurry... we are working on one now that should exceed the 375 Raptor... Calling it the 93Jimbo (tribute to a friend).

Norma 232 grain .366 bullets on readily available Starline .358W brass.

Going to try for 3,000 FPS, but doubt I will get quite that fast. Should remain MOA to 600 yards... should... based on lots of field work with the .375 Raptor.

Short Action and AR-10...

I might even do Garand... MAYBE.
