So I have a savage marked 110 in 308 winchester. It was made in chicopee falls mass. I noticed that the action seemed longer than a standard short action. I was told that at that time savage made some intermediate lenth actions and chambered them for short action rounds. Im in the proccess of having a 20" barrel instaled in 358 winchester. The stock that it came with is useless and is gonna become a piece of firewood.lol. Does anyone know of someone who might make a stock for this rifle? or if not maybe a custom stock maker who isnt gonna break the bank?

There were three action lengths made for the short action Savage and one length for the long action Savage.
The center to center lengths were as follows.
4.522" for the first generation.
4.275" for the second gen.
4.400" for third gen.
The long action measures 5.062"
From 1988 to 1997 all Savages used the long action.

I have a new, unused, walnut Savage 110 stock for a medium action rifle. I only have the stock, not the bottom metal. PM if you're interested.

I always thought Savage used one action until the 90s.
I saw a 222 on a long action, probably a 70s gun.

Back in the 1960s, Savage made a shorter than standard 110 action for a few years. Longer than the short action and shorter than the long action, generally a PITA to find parts for. I have the stock because the seller assured me that it was a short action stock and refused to reply to my emails after I'd bought it.

The intermediate length action is commonly referred to as the "J" series action and will have the 4.522" action screw spacing.
Savage never had a true short action until the 4.275" spaced SA came out in 1998.

I'm sure that will be useful information for somebody. Do you know the year that they were introduced and the year that they were no longer being cataloged?

The intermediate length actions were introduced in 1959 and soldiered on through 1987.
They were then replaced by the regular long action with magazine and bolt baffle/bolt stop modifications to handle the shorter cartridges. There were no intermediate or short action Savages at all from 1988-1997.
The true SA Savage was introduced in 1998 with a 4.275" spacing. These were replaced in late 2006 by the current SA Savage with centerfeed mags and a 4.400" spacing.

I'm surprise that if Savage made the intermediate length action 110s for 28 years, 1959-1987, why are they so uncommon?

SO which one of these would be best for a .257 Roberts? Going light as possible and still being able to seat bullets out as far as possible

The "J" series 4.522" actions have the same length magazines (~2.85")as the true short action 4.275" so going with the 4.275" would save a bit of weight but more importantly would have the most aftermarket stocks available for it.

I can only speculate but I think it has to do with the market Savage appealed to.
Savage was decidedly low end at this point and the casual hunters who liked the Savage price point also liked the cartridges with the deer camp popularity. Hence the 30-06, 270, 300WM and 7mm RM predominated among these buyers. The rifle looneys who appreciated the 243, 308 or the 358 gravitated towards Remingtons Winchesters or the various Mauser actioned rifles.

The 70's and early 80's were truly a very dark point in Savage history and I think their advertising and appeal suffered badly.

Rather than trying to squeeze some fractional additional velocity out of a "seat bullets out as far as possible" 257 Roberts, why not just do a long action in 25-06? That seems like an easier, cheaper, solution to get more velocity from a .257" rifle using a cartridge case with a .473" head diameter. Just a thought.

Savage did make a limited run of 110s in 257R several years
ago, but you dont see them very often.
