Can a Remington 700 short action with a standard bolt face be rebarreled to a .284 Winchester without any modifications? How many rounds will a ADL hold down. Will it feed OK? I know the magazine box will be tight but I plan on running 140 grainers.

My 25-284 and 6.5-284 Remingtons feed better with the SAUM/WSM mag box and followers.

I think that the 7mm-08 fits the 700 SA better than the 284, 'cause the 4mm shorter case allows for more bullet seating latitude and the difference in case capacity doesn't make an obvious difference in field performance until you get out beyond the 300+/- ranges that I shoot game.

I think that the 284 got benched the day that the 270 WSM, 7mm SAUM, and 7mm WSM were introduced.

Thanks for the input guys. I think that I will go the 7mm-08 route and save me a few headaches.

284 will work fine as 260remguy said. A factory Shamu follower would be good insurance against any feeding problems.

But I'd agree with the 7mm-08 suggestion unless you're just a fan of the 284 case........which I am......and I love my 284 and my 25-284 and never had a problem with either feeding or stuffing bullets into the case to meet the 2.825" mag restriction. I'd take that one step further and do up a 7mm-08AI it just to eak out that last bit of speed. You're a reloader, I'm guessin', just because of your consideration of the 284 in the first place.
You can add a wyatt's mag box for more bullet seating leeway too.
I'm in the middle of a .284 build on a Model 7. I have some experience with the .284 and have had no issues feeding the .284 in the standard box of a M7 or a 700 SA.
You can easily reach .270 velocities with a .284 an a box that will let you seat out to 2.85"
Wyatts is another very good option for any 700.
When you use a Wyatts box, it appears that you lose the hole for the front screw of a adl trigger guard. Is this correct?
I don't like the idea of having to modify action just to fit the Wyatt box. Just came back from the range with my LH Ruger 7-08 3 different loads with 140 gr bullets around 1" groups up to 2900 FPS. I prefer the 7-08 in 2.8 " mag box. After owning several 284,s 2 Win 88,s 1 Savage 99 and 1 LH Rem 700 Short Action.
Just curious, but what is the COAL of a Wyatts box, versus a SA M70?

Correct. But who cares? None of my ADL's have the middle screw in them anyway. Just another pressure point that COULD mess up the total equation.

ID of the box is supposed to be 2.995". I think you could load to 2.98" COL or so and be fine.

Wyatt's website says 2.995" giving a .110" increase over a standard box. This doesn't quite add up for me, because my standard boxes have a useable COAL of 2.830"' which is 0.165" shorter than the Wyatt's

The Wyatt's going on my 300 wsm does measure right at about 2.995". I'm having it throated for kissing with a 208 amax at 2.95 which doesnt leave a lot of room for chasing but my last 300 wsm shot them well with some jump so it should be ok.

This may be a bit "off-topic" but the question arose about a custom box VS a SA Win so here goes. I just finished a Winchester [push-feed] Mod 70 into a sweet 6.5 Swede. If a guy removes the little rolled steel gizzy at the rear of the Win mag box he can about 3.105 or so and thus have plenty for the [standard] factory Remmy 140 gr ammo. Also this is just about perfect for the recommended OAL in the Hornady reloading manual which, I think, recommends about 3.126 or so.
As to the 284 case in the 700 SA? It does feed a LOT better with the SAUM magazine as the 284 case is a rebated head/magnum case body cartridge. I have found the SA Rem 700 [600] are at their best with the 25/284 but, with the longer beautiful 6.5 slugs you lose a bit of case capacity if you seat the 140s back to clear the box length thus I limit the SA to the 25 cal. It is a shooting match. Seat the bullets out to the base and lose function--seat the bullets back to get the feeding and lose case capacity? Which can you live with the easiest. 7-08 AI? Not really my first choice but the 263 Express[ Mr Ken Waters] aka the 260 Remington AI? No moss grows on this either.

Good idea.

In the late 80's I built a 284W on a S/A M700. It fed....OK...not great, but nor did it ever jam on me either. Just didn't evoke a lot of confidence.

Besides, if comparing apples to apples, my 270 still had more "oomph"....

Plus, the 7mm-08 is sooo easy to load for.

I've got a Wyatt's box .. installed by Kevin Wyatt. He's "good people." I can load to 2.97". Factory on that gun was 2.82" max. So .15" gain.

I've done a 6x.284 on a std 700. It worked ok with the factory .308 family sheet metal and follower. Didn't feed super smooth, but it did feed. Think I was 3-down plus one up the spout.
