#3 Lilja at 23" .284"/.280 Rem.

McMillan standard fill (haven't decided on style yet)

Remmy 700 action

BDL - Factory bottom metal

7.0 lbs? More? Less?

Thought about doing an EDGE fill to save some weight, but I REALLY like my rifles to balance in the middle/front action screw.

I now this won't help at all but to me the #3 Lilja is quite a bit. Now I love the #2 and I would go with it, and with the Edge fill and I feel you'll get the balance you like. Though it might be a bit more weight forward?

I do love them weight forward though.

That'll be close....

For comparision 23" #4 Rock, lightly fluted, standard BDL Classic, 16 oz scope in Talleys goes 8-3

Dober,

The last rifle I built (.270 Win. - recently sold to NSAQAM) was with a Hunters EDGE and #2 Lilja at 24" weighed right at 6 1/2lbs. Balance was nice, but a SMIDGE more barrel weighted than I would like. Maybe the same setup with barrel at 23" or 22.5" would be snazzy.

Just was thinking that if I went #3 Lilja, the standard fill McM might balance out the barrel weight.

Thoughts?

Lilja says a #3 in .308 is 3.11lbs. I'm guessing a .284 is fairly close to that as their formula adds and subtracts at .308 so while the .284 will be a heavier barrel inch for inch, their formula also subtracts more....so I'd call it a push....you could also shorten the shank from what they have too.

IIRC a 700 LA with all the fixins is 2.75lbs so I think that puts you right at about 8#s

Something else that really throws me off.....

I had a .300 Winny built that came in about 1/2lb. less than expected.

Stiller Predator
24" Hart #4
McMillan Hunter standard fill
Factory 700 Bottom metal.
7.2lbs without scope/rings.

Does that sound a shade light to anyone else?

300 is a bigger hole maybe? All of these weights are pretty close. A #3 barrel in a swirl (standard fill) is what Im going with and is perfect (to me). good luck

P.S. the only thing I can suggest is check out OregonMuley's builds on here.

Classic Edge and #3 fluted and quite nice looking. 7 1/2 pounds i think with scope 7 even without fluting maybe

Hrmm, a Hart #4 is .650 where a lilja #3 is .625 so not too much difference and then there's any differences in shank.

I wonder if the Stiller is significantly different than a 700?

That particular barrel was made by Hart, which I THINK I understand to run a tad more trim that other makers.

Also, I haven't run across many barrel makers who will flute anything smaller than a #4, and then only from .284" dia or smaller.

Lilja's muzzle diameter is taken at 27" remember

Damn this can be frustrating when you don't know 100% what you want!

I have a fluted #3 Lilja @ 23 in a Classic Edge & aluminum PTG Oberndorf b/m. Rifle only sans scope & rings is 6 lbs 4 ozs for a .243. So figuring the standard fill stock should add about 6-8 ozs maybe and a couple for a LA and you should still be a little less than 7 lbs I think you should be fine.
