I've got a Model 70 '06 that's ready to start its new life, but thought I'd better check. Does anyone know if this round typically feeds okay from a standard M70 box?
Well, apparently there's no problem at all. I located some rounds locally and found that they seem to feed just fine.
There really should be very little problem. It might be that a magnum magazine box works marginally better.
I figured as much, but the 'smith asked me to check before sending him the gun. Said he knew Remingtons and Rugers would work just fine, but couldn't recall with the M70 as he hadn't done a Winchester in some time.
What vintage M70?
1995 Classic Stainless
The pre 64 in either 270 or 30-06 works perfectly according to D'Arcy Echols who is more persnickety than anyone. The Classic action is not the same as the pre 64.
My pre-64 9.3X62 was a 30-06, and the feed rails are unmodified. It feeds empty 9.3X62 cases perfectly from the right side of the mag. Those coming out the left side catch on the extractor cut; no big surprise there.

But zero feeding issues with ammo.

I had a neat little P-64 carbine, made from re-boring a .30-06 Std.rifle, chopping the barrel and putting the ramp back on. It was then bedded into a much-modded Boyd's "nutmeg" laminate stock and was light, very nicely balanced and just a super little piece.

My best friend built it, sold it to me, then "needed" it back and decided that I should take his minty P-64 .300H&H instead. I had/have several custom 9.3x62 rifles and so I agreed to the deal.

However, I cannot imagine why any P-64 "standard" action would not function perfectly with the 9.3. I tend to prefer Euro. rounds in Euro. actions and US cartridges in US-made actions and so I now have two custom Brno ZGs, a CZ-550 custom and an original Oberndorf Type B in this fine old round.

If, I did another P-64 custom, especially a carbine type, it would be a .35Whelen and this would also function much as the 9.3s do. In now 7 years of owning/shooting rifles in 9.3x62, 7 different rifles so chambered, I have NEVER had a feeding issue and think this is typical of this well-designed cartridge.
While we're kinda on the subject guys and as the OP's question is sorted - anyone know from experience if 30.06AI will feed ok from a pre'64 standard magazine box?
I can say it feeds fine when AI'd and necked to .284 in my Pre64.

Can't see where the standard 30-06 case AI'd would not?
Thanks Mooner, I was building a 338/06 but my local range just banned all 8mm and above so had to rethink things to be practical.
A 30.06 throated for the heavies will do the same job and will be a bit more versatile I guess. My gunsmith has a AI reamer so am considering that.
I must have got the oddball P-64 action (originally 30-06) as it would not feed the 9.3x62 off the left side. I tried a new spring and follower and it did not help. A trip to Redneck's shop and it works perfectly now.
