Have you considered the retro look?

Here's my last two Mauser projects:

Here is my son's Turk. Standard Bob, trimmed back Tupperware backed w/ flip-flop, buehler safety, forged and flattened (ala FN) knob. Vertical Leupold Rifleman rings & Weaver K3:

[Linked Image]

It's in Mike McCabe's capable hands currently having a Chapman-style safety, and then it's off to my local 'smith for a Ruger-style Brownell knob. I picked up an M8 4x that's going into Burris Sig Zees.

Gonna get it all bead blasted & parkerized for durability.

Stock is in the works awaiting his arrival at "full grown" status. Don't know if he'll follow his old man in disdain of synthetic or go for its utility. We shall see, but I bet by then he'll already have dropped several big game animals!

I like Mauser projects!

Here's the last one I did. I need to get some new pics now that I conned a friend into checkering it and I put the scope on it.

Interesting bottom metal, may I ask who made/makes this and is it steel or some alloy?

I love re-worked, very basic and simple Mauser 98 types, old FNs, Husqies, good examples of military actions and, especially, the superb Brno 21/22 and ZG actions. I like these as basic as possible, meticulous workmanship and slightly under "average" weight for the chambering, as in my just over 7 lb. full custom HVA in .280 Rem.

You have a couple of really nice rifles there, good luck hunting with them!

PS: WHAT is that neat little "peep" sight on the rear mount base of the top rifle? I like that sort of setup VERY much.

That top rifle is lovely. What brand front sight? What stock? Thanks for sharing.

Bottom metal on the cheap gun was one I pickup up for dirt cheap off of ebay because the floorplate was missing. I just made a replacement, it is a lightweight alloy. I used alum to make the plate. The peep on the top one is a ghost ring made by williams gun sight in town here and I made the base to fit the 7/16" dovetails on the bases I made for some PME ring I got. Funny the bases started out to be for talleys and I make a wrong cut so I recut them and got a set of ring from Kobe. Sometimes projects change midstream and you need to just go with it.

I just started a Mauser project, it's going to be a light weight (hopefully) 7x57. The donor was a mismatched 1908 Brazilian with a bad bore.

Ray, I never weighted it but it is light. 30-06 build on a recarberized 1909 action. Stock was one I heavily reworked from Richards. Here it is with the scope and checkered. Last pic is one of the stock when I first started with it.

Again, that is a fine, fine looking rig. I've always wondered about Richards stocks. Looks like you're pretty handy. I'm working over a Boyds Classic walnut this morning myself.

Here is a link to my Zastava .25-06 I built a few years back.

Still have to give serious thanks to Karnis for helping me complete the rifle.

I have a couple of really nice '09 Argentine's that "should" become something post retirement. We shall see.
Posted By: custombolt Re: mauser project - 07/08/13
Don. I'm ' diggin' the cheek piece and also I see that you trimmed the rollover down nicely. I did the same thing on a Wenig's rollover. Interesting graft line in the wood.

I would have gone a little darker, but that is a nifty looking setup.
Posted By: efw Re: mauser project - 07/16/13
They only do the one color; different from Cerakote, Metalife is plating. It molecularly bonds to the steel rather than sitting on top and is harder and more corrosion-resistant than stainless. Higher lubricity than cerakote, too.

I am UBBER excited to get er shooting!

Starting with this:

Going to screw it into this:

Haven't decided on overall length for the barrel yet, nor the final chambering. It's a Shilen 6.5x55 #2 contour, 9 twist chrome moly, presently 26 inches, not likely to stay there though. Husqvarna action with a magazine long enough that 6.5/06 wildcat of some sort may earn a little consideration. But I do like sticking with a Swedish theme here (Norma brass, powders and maybe even bullets warrant consideration too).

Still stock shopping for the Swede. Haven't settled on anything yet.

Then there's another project:

Sold my last Argentine Mauser Sporter when I needed funds for an Estonian trip about 2 years ago and have really wanted one since. So, I found one for $139 at Cabelas in Grand Junction, but it might not be as simple as I was hoping to throw her in a sporter stock, Timney trigger, new bolt, proper scope mounts and go to work.... I can't chamber any of my old 7.65x53 ammo, so a chamber cast may be in order. Many of these guns have been converted to .308, so that might be what happened here. Got two .308s in the house, so really would have preferred this gun to have been a 7.65x53.

Did some minor file work to the 91 stock last Sunday. Had to remove some excess wood from around the rear action screw and trigger guard area. Then thinned the grip and forearm a little bit and tried to accentuate the cheek piece slightly. After that I sanded her down to 600 grit. Mineral spirits added to see the color and figure...and for fun.

Keep in mind this is a cheap stock for a cheap gun and I'm an amateur, but I like it so far.

One more "project"

This is my 8mm-06 AI. Would like to extend the magazine box and maybe even the throat so I'm not sidled with 8x57 length rounds. Also wouldn't mind altering the bolt a bit to fit a better and lower scope. Otherwise, she's a beater and will resemble that until I change my mind.
