Im having a pre 64 model 70 rebarreled to .270 and I am looking for soemone to do it. I have read a lot of reviews on Pac Nor , Douglas, Shlien, etc. and there seems to be a lot of opinions on all of them? Also anyone have any reccomendations on who to install it?

Thanks

I have had four Pac-Nor barrels installed by them and all have shot extremely well, and a fairly fast turn-around time.

I have not had a problem with any of them but always had in the back of my mind that if there were a problem and they had provided the barrel and fitting then it would be easier to deal with then having to deal with multiple entities.

Definitely Redneck. Bartlein, Brux and Rock creek are my top choices.

Jim Kobe in Bloomington Mn does a very good job of rebarreling.
He has done a number of them for me and they all shoot very good.
I have used Shilen, Lilja and Kreiger.

Um....if you look I side and see monkeys. Wrong barrel. Barrels full of monkeys are generally found in the toy isle. wink
You should narrow your barrel maker down first.

Do you want a chrome moly barrel (i.e. for bluing) or a stainless barrel? Not all makers advertise chrome moly barrels.

Do you want a specific contour? Several makers, i.e. Krieger, will not make a skinny or standard weight stainless barrel.

Do you have a preference for cut rifled vs button rifled?

Do you have a preference for a barrel maker from a particular part of the country?

Do you have a specific timeline, i.e. less than 6 months?

Do you have a gunsmith, or do you want the barrel maker to install the barrel?

Once you start answering these questions for yourself, you start whittling down barrel makers.

As for a gunsmith, both Lee Christianson (Redneck) and Jim Kobe (JKob) have done work for me and both are excellent. I would also recommend Dennis Olson.

I like Broughton and Hart.

I've had a couple ER Shaw barrels that shot very well and cleaned easy. In the process of building a pair of .270s with their #1 contour 24", I like them very much. I bought one of their Mark VII rifles a few years ago and they do a fantastic polished blue if you have them do the barrel work.

If you have Redneck or JKob do the work, I'd use whatever they recommend. I would imagine they have makers they prefer to use and you don't get reputations like those gentlemen by accident.

I put this Pac Nor 270 barrel on this pre 64 M70 [originally 30-06]

I have also put Shilen select match stainless 257 #3 taper 9" twist barrel on a pre 64 M70 [originally 30-06] and chambered for 25-06

I am about to put a Benchmark 243 barrel on a pre 64 M70 [originally 308]

Who ever barrels the old M70, it is nice if he has one of these

You should find a gunsmith first and see what barrel he recommends.
Jim Kobe has my latest rifle.

I will do most any barrel except Pac-nor (In my experience they won't stand behind their barrels), or ER Shaw. I prefer SHilen for hunting application and I will do most actions, prefering M70's, Remingtons and Mauser.

This and I'd throw in krieger.

The better barrels like these mentioned are only 20-30 bucks more than cheaper barrels so why not use the best?

Redneck is your guy.

I have had great luck with Brux and they will stand behind their barrels.
