Made up a dummy round with a 80 grain Berger seated to where I wanted it,
and sent it off the JGS to grind the reamer.

Came out perfect, with a loaded round at 2.550" OAL seated in the lands:

That 22 should really scoot. Should fall right betwixed the 22-250 and 22-50 AI?

What are you going to do for an encore? *grins*
Very Nice Rig!
Sweet rifle. I dig a McMillian Edge in the buff.
Can you take a shot of your 22x47 side by side with a few other similar cartridges, e.g. 22-250, 22-250 AI, 222 Mag, 223. I don't know if you've got any of these loaded with heavies for fast twists, but I'd be cool to see.

And to squelch the peanut gallery ......this was not a new build.....ha ha.....

I took a 6x47 Lapua barrel off this rig to scratch a lingering 22 itch.

It does that in spades........

That's what my research showed. Results seem to favor the AI side.

Next a 7x47 Lapua.. Should make fine hunting cartridge!!

Its a shame the 6.5 Laupa did not gain more ground, instead the copycat Creedmore got all the advertisement money.
Just curious as to the velocities with 80-grainers?

That 80 grain .224" Berger is a great killing bullet too...

Low tech farting around comparing capacities using AA-2230 to the bottom of the necks, the 22x47 has a grain and a half advantage over a 22-250 in fired brass. Likely more if I'd only gone to the shoulder.

The 22-250 has around .050" total case taper with a 28* shoulder, the 47 has .013 taper and a 30* shoulder angle. Damn close to a factory "Improved" case

I've got high hopes......

Killed a half dozen coyotes last year with them, & they worked great, but I'm adding another 350 FPS to the mix.

and Sold!

Looks like I've got something to do this winter!

Thanks for the pics!
My 6x47 is quite simply the most accurate gun I've ever owned. Next gun I put together will be a 7x47 lapua.
Love that gun you have there.

Mm

So load work consisted of the 80 VLD's in the lands, and three powders that I had on the shelf, Varget, H-4350, and H4831-SC. Based on research, and past experience with a 22-250 AI, I figured the H-4350 was the place to be, but I wanted to explore both sides of it, speed wise. An extra 6.5-20x50 LRT Leupold was mounted up, and testing commenced.

As figured, 4831 was a touch too slow, and crunching powder before reaching top velocity. I found a good load with the other pair, so I had a shoot off between them, while testing bullet seating at the same time. I found pretty good accuracy at .060" off, but it still didn't match in the lands. When the smoke cleared, H-4350 with the Bergers in the lands won out.

Final check to confirm shows I made the right choice:

The wind got a little sporty by the time I got back to 400,
but the minimal vertical is the standout feature:

Comparisons at 800 yards for conversation.....

22x47 - 80 VLD at 3370 - 13.9 MOA drop - 5.3 MOA drift - 597 ft lbs energy

6x47 - 105 VLD at 3030 - 16.1 MOA drop - 4.9 MOA drift - 777 ft lbs energy

6.5x47 - 130 VLD at 2820 - 19.0 MOA drop - 5.5 MOA drift - 784 ft lbs energy

7-08 - 140 BT at 2940 - 18.1 MOA drop - 5.8 MOA drift - 841 ft lbs energy

Pretty sure this one's staying home from the deer hunt. I've got others more suited for PD's I could toss in the truck that won't trash the barrel in one outing.

Would make a cool twofer hunt if the weather would cooperate.

Thanks.....

Got alot of experience with 75 VLD's at 3075 on coyotes....great performance.

Stepped up to the 80's at 3025 for a handful last winter w/equal results. Typical small exit on broadside shots.

Not sure whether to expect a big/bigger/huge mess stepping up the velocity, or maybe staying inside. Doesn't matter around here for hides, but can/does when I head west.
Hey Aalf that looks great, I have a couple of questions if you don't mind.

It seems like you like the 32 mm Nightforce over the 40 mm one, is there any real reason for that, and also I hear a lot of people who like them are not real keen on the IHR reticle in particular.

I'm not really in a position to buy a top end scope at the moment but could probably stretch it to a Nightforce SHV 3-10 , I am wondering if you have looked at them and if so what reticule would you choose, considering they are not illuminated.

I like the smaller profile of the 32's over the 40's. & while I'd like to have the side focus of the 40, I prefer the illumination format of the 32.

My 1st couple had the NP-R2 reticle, which I thought was a tad fine for coyote, but the illumination negated that in low light.

Then I bought a 32 w/ the MOAR reticle. I liked it, but really didn't need/want the whole reticle to light up, but just the center section like the SHV's do. Never felt I would use the hash marks for hold when it was so dark you needed the reticle lit. You did need to be careful not to over power your view w/ too much intesity in low light

So next I bought an IHR for the 6.5x47, & liked it from the get go. No clutter, the thicker portions lead your eye to the center like a duplex, but you still can use the X for 3 MOA down & dirty quick holds, and only the center lights up. The center X is relatively thin, which makes it great for shooting longer distances w/o covering up your target. It does disappear way before a regular duplex, but again, with illumination it make it a moot point.

I don't have any experience with a SHV......yet.
Thanks for the detailed response, much appreciated

Not talking about PD's. We couldn't toast it on any dog towns I shoot right now anyway. Throw it in that shiny black truck.
