Hello just joined today! You all seem to know a lot about a lot!! So I have a finished at 24 shilen 1-14 twist barrel sitting here from a build I had done a few years ago a 358 Hoosier! Now that we in Indiana can hunt with about anything I'm thinking about reaming it to neck up 300wsm to 358! But my only concern is does a rem 700 short action have enough coal room to load 200 gr nosler accubonds or Barnes 200 ttsx with out the ogive of the bullet being down in the neck of brass so far you have to role crimp?? Or will what bullets you guys shoot with best luck? And what powders an any guys have a load sheet or any advice on this I'd love to talk about it!! The 200 gr accubond I loved in the 358 Hoosier! Thanks for any advice!

No experience with either cartridge you mention. That said I have a fair amount of experience with various remingtons in 350 remington which is very similar to your 358/300wsm. Yet to find a remington that will play nice with an OAL much more than 2.800. I know for a fact the 200 gr noslers teeter on the very edge of ogive entering the case mouth. The accubond is nearly identical to the old 35 caliber ballistic tips. Nosler actually labeled those for the 35 whelan because of the ogive and case mouth issue with other cartridges. The barnes will probable be ok but keep in mind the length is going to be closer to a 225 to 250 grain bullet. Bullets are going to take up powder space.

All that said I would suggest skipping these bullet options and go with the 180 grain TTSX. Assuming this is a deer load. I run the 180s in my 350 mags at just over 3000 fps. Accurate as can be and hell on deer. The 358/300wsm has about 5 more grains of capacity so you could run them even faster probable. I have had amazing results with TAC. I run 64 grains under the 180s. Which is listed as the max but again the 350 is slightly smaller case.

With any bullet you choose keep in mind you could just trim the cases slightly to drop the case mouth below the ogive. I have done this with my 358 winchesters to be able to use the 180 grain TTSX

Now other considerations you may or may not have thought of. . If you were running a hoosier I assume your dealing with a 308 action You will need a bolt face for the 300 wsm and getting those short fat wsm to feed from a action not originally designed for it may or may take some work.

If it were me I would rechamber to 358 winchester. No bolt issues no feeding issues. Just trim the cases slightly to be able to run the 180 grain TTSX. Despite it being a "woods" cartridge. With the 180s it is a 300 to 350 yard cartridge easy. Should be able to get into the 2800 to 2900 FPS range with TAC. TAC in general has been excellent in 35 caliber cartridges.

Heck yea I did have bolt opened up to mag face! Was going to have a 7mm saum built but ended up putting it on a tikka action! So now have a 358 barrel that's threaded for rem action an a magnum bolt face and already have 350 rem mag in a Ruger

Then your ready to go for the for the 358/300. Hopefully someone will be able to offer some advice based on hands on experience with the cartridge. I also run a Ruger in 350. Probable the favorite of all the 35s I own.

OP, I don't have experience with the 358-300WSM wildcat, but have a lot of experience with the 300WSM based on a Rem SA, with max mag length 2.800".

Looking at the Nosler Partition specs, the .308" 180 grain Protected Tip Partition - the bullet I use exclusively in my 300WSM - has an OAL = 1.180" while the .358" 200 grain Partition OAL = 1.175". So cartridge OAL shouldn't be a problem. The ABs are both significantly longer than either PT, so may pose COAL magazine constraints and/or case capacity reductions.

The Partition, especially the Protected Tip design, IMHO is particularly suitable for the WSMs, because of magazine OAL and chamber leade length design requirements. I assume that in IN you plan to use the 358-300WSM on WD, but the Partition design will produce very good nose expansion, despite the ability of the rear core to penetrate very well.

The sharper ogive of the ABs may work in the WSM chamber, but I'd be concerned about the COAL fit in the magazine. Just my 2 cents.

You can run COAL as long as ~2.970 with an AICS Mag. Just buy a bottom metal from CDI or Badger and a WSM/SAUM magazine (no spacer) from Accurate Magazine. You’ll also need to have a small notch cut in the feedramp on a standard 700 action to feed from a no-spacer magazine. I have several rifles set up this way and it all works great. You’ll have MUCH better feeding from the mag than from a standard WSM box also.
