I have a Custom 300 h&h on a 700. I think the barrel is done. Can a sporter contour be set back? I included a pic of the shoulder/contour. Other option would be to Re-bore to 338wm? Would that clean up the current chamber? Any other great ideas?
Thanks.

I've never heard of anyone shooting the barrel out of a 300 H&H before, is the throat eroded out of it, how many rounds through it?

Yes it can be set-back,had it done on a Feather weight barrel, good luck.

Really, you set back a .300 H&H barrel and had it rebored to .338 Win Mag?

To clean up the old chamber you'd have to set back the barrel at least .350". Could be done but you'd probably be better off just getting a new barrel with the same contour as your existing barrel.

Unknown round count, bought it used.

Yes, the throat is looking really bad with a scope.

340 weatherby would be the cats a$$.... Mine would be a AI in 375H. Cool factor very high......Or a 358STA if you have time to prep brass....

So, can you reach the lands with a bullet and sufficient neck grab, and still fit the magazine? If so, it's not shot out yet.

Rebarrel.. Great caliber, better than the rebore jobs.. The best I think would be a .340.. I have one, like it, but like the H & H 10-1 over the .340!!

Shooting the throat out of a hot rifle is not that difficult if you shoot a great deal.. My old .300 is on its third barrel.. Doubt this one ever gets the rebarrel job, as I no longer test loads like I once did.. But just the same, I have a new .30 blank waiting just in case..

Id question the barrel being "done". If it is, then good going. Borescopes dont carry the weight of powder and bullets.

Id be feeding it two hundreds, just to be sure. No sense in a set back and re-bore to something that essentially does the same on game or target.

I have one set back chambered gun. It had a pretty short life even though it lost nearly 2" cleaning out every speck of borescoped disease.
A re- barrel gets my vote.

Whether you can set it back depends on how bad the throat is. I'd take it to Rick Freudenberg in Everett, WA, and listen to what he has to say.

I am sending you a deal on a new ss 4 groove barrel.

I've had a couple of "shot out" barrels that would require a lot of cleaning to get shooting accurately. If that is the issue with your 300 why not try Dura Coat finish. I've just got through Dura Coating a barrel that has erosion issues - the jury is still out as to how that is going to work out though.

My guess is that the bullets seated to mag length are no longer accurate due to throat growth. If this is the case, then go to a bullet with more bearing surface which will allow you to get closer to the lands

For example:

OAL for a 180g Berger VLD Hunting vs a 180g Sierra BTSP.

Try a thorough cleaning a couple of the Tubbs throat maintenance bullets then Dyna Bore coat. I would do this only on a barrel that looks like it is a goner but you have nothing to loose. The barrel may surprise you. Unless it is a known accuracy barrel I would replace it as usually throat erosion goes for a couple of inches if it is bad. A new barrel is almost a sure thing for accuracy if screwed on right. 300 H&H has a cool factor and for some reason kicks a lot less than a Winchester at almost the same velocities.

This may be due to the long sloping shoulders and this could be a factor in throat erosion too. Angle of the shoulders apex is into the throat.
