I was wondering if I could get some advice on once again. I am in the process of getting a barrel ordered for an 7stw build, but I can not choose between a 1:8 and a 1:9 twist. I plan on using bullets that are between 160 and 175 and using it for deer, elk, and long range shooting what one would fit my needs the best and what brand would you suggest

thank you!

No need to contemplate
Go 1 in 8

1:8

No downside to the faster twist for a hunting rifle.

As for barrel maker:

You should narrow your choices first.

Do you want a chrome moly barrel (i.e. for bluing) or a stainless barrel? Not all makers make chrome moly barrels.

Do you want a specific contour? Several makers, i.e. Krieger, will not make a skinny or standard weight stainless barrel.

Do you have a preference for cut rifled vs button rifled?

Do you have a preference for a barrel maker from a particular part of the country?

Do you have a specific timeline, i.e. less than 6 months?

Do you have a gunsmith, or do you want the barrel maker to install the barrel?

Once you start answering these questions for yourself, you start whittling down barrel makers.

If you go 1-8 just make sure you use a bullet that has a tuff jacket a 7STW will push the grain of bullet you want to use so your RPM's will be up there. High RPM's tend to stress thinner jacket bullets, but you need enough to stabilize also. There are alot of factors to consider, altitude, velocity, and caliber. I'm hearing more and more about some 195's splashing with the 28 Nosler on game, don't know if it's a to thin a jacket problem versus rpms or what. I know some here are gonna say they have had no problem could be a lot # problem I'm just hearing of problems from people who I trust telling me this. Just my 2 cents
