This past weekend was a local gun show and I went looking with no real purpose in mind. I saw this rifle and all of a sudden I had to have it...

High quality work. Do you have any idea who did the stock?

Nice Mk X! I like the way they straightened the swept bolt handle.

I am not a fan of the Mauser action, but this whole package was too nice to pass up. The guy that built it worked for Jaeger back in the 70’s and built this rifle in 1980. It sat around and never was fired until I took it to the range yesterday. The guy’s name is Maurice McCain...

How did it shoot?

Do you know what barrel he used?

Mausers are good, solid actions. They'll last several lifetimes.

I don't have many, but do like them.

I just shot the same ammunition I had loaded for the Model 70 I am going to sell. He used a Douglas premium barrel and it shot my Handloader fine...

Sure looks like a Mk X action, serial number and DOM on rear bridge are give aways.
That is a lovely piece.

The FN brand is usually stamped on the left side of the action.

I am having the shroud on the rear of the bolt, the grip cap and the buttplate case/colored. Any suggestions on what improvements to the rings or bases???
Posted By: irfubar Re: Custom 257 Roberts - 07/21/18
I would recommend S&K rings and bases for your Mauser.

I will have to see how hard it would be to case/color the base or rings. Steel that thin can warp easily...

+1. I have a set on my original FN Supreme that I took to Namibia a couple of months ago.

You may want to check the S&K website, I believe they also have traditional split ring for those bases. Not sure and have no experience with them?

As far as case hardening that I don't know either, best ask an expert? The rings seem to made of a soft malleable steel and maybe case hardening will make them brittle?

I've never seen those case hardened.

They are about the slickest rings going.

What's the story on your rifle?

Shrap, I'd call the company and see what they think. Those get bent a good bit, fitting them on the scope.

Dirtfarmer,
The first rifle with the S&K rings and bases is a 1909 Argentine action with a Douglas #1 contour 1/8 twist barrel in 240 Wby mag. Stocked in black walnut.
The second close up pic is my G33/40 with a Douglas featherweight in 30-06.
I built both myself.
