Got an action and barrel, bdl stock on the way...will be 250 savage on my remington 700.

Er shaw 24 inch chrome moly 250-3000 barrel, 10 twist.

Before I have my gunsmith buddy screw it together...is it worth it to go Ackley improved?

I have no problem fire forming and it seems to me once I get a sizing die it's no different than any other cartridge right?

If i can have 257 Roberts type speed, why not?

85's at 3350 from my 21" tube and 110's at 2950, that's the AI of course.

That's the idea. That improved velocity would be nice. And I have not decided how short to go with the barrel so I started at 24 and we will see how it balances

If memory serves me, P.O. Ackley felt the 250 Improved was one of the best of the improved rounds. It will minimize stretching. Once you form the brass, you will not know the difference while loading.

I built a 250 Sav on a Sav12 action last September and sighted it in in October.

Excellent. I have cfe223 on hand too

This is an Ackley?

I have a pre'64 Winchester M/70 Featherweight whose previous owner rebarreled with a Douglass premium barrel 22" long, caliber .257 Roberts. I feel that 22" is the ideal barrel length for me, my previous Roberts was a standard weight M/70 with a 24" barrel.

I have a 250Ackley Improved on a '94 Brazilian action. I shoot the original 90gr X @ 3250. Kills deer like a lazer beam. I still love the regular 250Savage though. powdr

A 250AI is basically a 25 Creedmore. Steelhead is spot on in "AI" the 250 savage is never a mistake.

Having trouble finding Ackley dies in stock. You guys have suggestions?

The 250-3000 has 45/46 grains capacity while the 250AI increases that to 51/52 grains, one of the larger, percentage wise, gains by going AI.

If your barrel wasn't already chambered, I'd suggest that you might consider the 25 Souper in lieu of the 250AI, but since it is, that is probably as less viable option.

www.midwayusa.com has Reddings for $104.

Thanks

Check out the article by Richard Mann in Handloader 307, April 2017. He and some WV guys necked down 6.5 CM brass and called it the .257 Wildcat, which is pretty much the same as the AI and .25 CM. Might pick up some data or other tips there.

I read that article. Pretty good stuff

You can use the Wilson neck die for a 22-250 AI with the appropriate bushing for neck sizing. For that matter most any maker's bushing die in 22-250 AI will work by just swapping out the bushing. Seating dies are a little more challenging. Plus the Redding dies mentioned above.

Hope I can do you proud.

Or, I if I can find a donor...lol

As an update, spoke with a local smith, and he was hesitant to move forward because he doesn't have an
250 AI reamer on hand. Also spoke with Karl Feldcamp ( used his services previously for bolt fluting) and same thing. Difference being Karl indicated that it should be a non-issue to rent the reamer, and seemed intrigued by the project.

The only other "customized" rifle I own is a 700 in 280 AI smithed by Mickey Coleman, bought used here on the 'fire.
Dang thing shoots everything into tiny groups.

Leaning hard toward sending the stuff to Karl and letting him work his magic.

Any info would be appreciated.

My Kampfeld 250AI

I wrote 5lbs 12oz but it’s actually 5lbs 6 oz

That is freaking awesome !

Hope you have some pictures of dead stuff & targets To go with?

Do you like the action cut? I guess my real question would be : Is the cut a worthwhile change?

I will say I figure the shorter opening of the Model a Seven action MIGHT benefit from the cut....and it does look cool

How does it shoot??

No target that I can find. It’s a laser with 85gr Barnes bullets. Zero’d at 200 with Leupold 2.5-8 B&C reticle it’s goot out to 400 MOA. That’s as far as I’ve gotten.

208 yards laser’d offhand shooting a bucket across a field.

Here’s a spike it rolled down a gully. After the stock was dipped.

I’ll never sell this one! Karl did this back when wait for a build as about 2-3 months. The cuts were his recommendation and the first one he did. They were not on his build sheet when he did it.

Should have mentioned the only bullets I roll for this is 85gr Barnes. It was inspired by Scott’s crown royal post in Alaska back years ago......damn time flys.

Found the load work up pic from ‘08
