Considering rebarreling a 70 classic wsm action and have a question in contour. Has standard sporter right now and am wondering what contour would be similar? Or I’d like the muzzle to be a little larger, ending at .6-.62” with 24” but don’t want to add a ton of weight. It’s going to be a 300wsm, with a goal end weight of 7.5-8lbs with Leupold 3-10 in Talley Lw.

If you are so inclined, you can go to Lilja's website and download one of his barrel weight calculator Excel files to determine weight gain/loss by changing profiles and dimensions. While I am not always able to replicate the exact weight of a particular barrel, the calculator gives a fairly accurate estimate of the weight difference between two contours, (or, the weight difference between two bore diameters).

If you plug in your current barrel dimensions, you can then adjust the contour dimensions to see how much adding 0.025" or 0.050" to the muzzle will increase the overall weight of your rifle.

That's what my EW weighed (7.75 pounds) and it had a Mcmillan hunters compact edge on it, with that same scope and ring set-up. You may want to look into that contour and see what dimensions it has (I believe it's about the same as a sporter, but fluted). Keep in mind, you'll have to replace the factory stock to stay at your weight goal...

Thanks for the info guys. I have an aluminum bottom metal already and will definitely be going with a lightweight stock, just trying to figure out the barrel. I’ll check out lilja calculator

PacNor has a weight/contour calculator too.

In the past I have had Pac-Nor copy the winny sporter contour, it turned out perfect.

Sounds like a Bartlein 2b or 3 would work out great for your 300wsm

Bartlein 2B was almost a drop in fit for the Classic Lt Sporter barrel channel. A number 3 took some scraping and sanding to fit a feather weight sporter contour stock.
The taper to the muzzle is not as fast so might be what you are looking for. If the shank of my 2B barrel was shortened just an eighth of an inch it would have been a drop in.

your at .6 now at the muzzle,

blued or stainless? Big difference in the process there.

Bartlein 2b will put you over 8 lbs easily.

I'm currently in this process right now, You might just want Pacnor to copy factory.

Only a few barrel makers will copy a factory 2 in stainless.

It’s actually at .58 right now, not .6”. Looking to stay with stainless and I might just get someone to copy the factory profile and make slight modifications to the rapper toward the muzzle. I was hoping there might be a pattern already out there that was a standard contour that would work.

Interesting, I have two of those rifles in .30 cal, both are right at .6 at the muzzle and .800 at 6 inches..

Your very close to a Rock Creek #2, they will not do a .30 cal at those dimensions in SS, very few will....

shooter71 here will copy yours I believe, send him a pm.

I currently have one rifle being done just has your describing, We'll see how it turns out...

You don't have a featherweight do you?

Definitely not a featherweight. I’ll take a few more measurements and post the info

Hart did a perfect job on a barrel for me. I wanted the featherweight step down at the receiver then the muzzle end up 0.600 at 22” and they nailed it.
It a touch beefier thru the mid section than the factory FWT contour which gives it a little more forward weight. It handles and balances perfectly.
8lbs on the nose scoped.
