Anyone shooting a 7 saum ? I'm looking for some info on a future project. This will be for 180 gr mostly with a side of 195 gr, if I get the itch. I'm leaning towards a long action for this build as it was suggested to me by a friend.

Till then I'm looking for info to launch big sleek 7mm bullets without burning big spoonfuls of powder at a time.

SAUM/280 propellant appetites are alike. The 280 boasts better brass,less bullschit and an extry round in the belly,as an absolute minimum. Hint.

Go 7-08 Fieldcraft,180 ELD's,Re-17 in Alpha brass and never fhuqking look back.

I have a Rem M7 AWR in 7-SAUM. It tips 7#, 2oz scoped with a 3-10x40 VX3. It's my carry rifle, goat rifle, whatever abuse rifle. In this guise, the short action makes sense as it shaves an ounce or two off the package. Drops 140's and 160's into little 3/4" groups - plenty good for a lightweight mountain rifle.

I figure if you are loading 180's or 190's you've got to be looking at a long ranger. 28" bbl, heavy barrel, drive for max velocity in a long tube. Weight's probably not the same criteria I used.

So, what do you want to do with it?

What am I doing with it you ask ?

Well it will be a mid-weight hunter/steel banger . I practice with my 6x47L out to 750 and would like more bullet for beyond that.

The only Remington LA mag face would be a 7 mm RM to Nosler 28. Lotta options in the middle of those two.
But a Ruger mag face with a 3.340 box makes a wonderful 7wsm or 7saum. I have both and find the saum friendlier. A 7-300wsm would also give a bit more neck tension if you are after such things.

Stick hit the nail on the head here... Not much wrong with the 7 SAUM but there is damn little brass available anymore. It all got made into 6.5 SAUM and that is now being dumped for the 6.5 PRC. I bought some of the $70/box Nosler 7 SAUM ammo and it didn't shoot worth a damn in my M7 Magnum yet the reloads I made from it do. Nothing wrong with the brass or cartridge but it isn't supported by Remington worth a damn and the Nosler was to damn spendy for what you get. 280 brass ammo every where at a reasonable price. Some hope on the horizon for brass as Hornady is cataloging the 300 SAUM brass and that is just a 1 stroke conversion to 7mm SAUM. Seems to me if the OP wants a long action just 7mm Rem Mag and be done with it.

I would be looking at the 7mm Sherman short or the Sherman max. Both based off improved SAUM cases but performance is off the charts. Check out 'shermanwildcatcartridges.com. I think that's his site or just Google Sherman wildcat cartridges.

I have a saum and I love it. Have a couple more in the works. I'm sitting on plenty of brass for all. You sound jealous because you don't have one. Full disclosure I have also owned mags in both 7mm and 300. After shooting them all I would keep the saum's.
