Looking for any I fo I can get regarding a .375 built on the 338 RCM case. Would be looking at an OAL of around 3" to maximize case capacity for use in a intermediate length Mauser. Any help would be appreciated. Anyone build one? What kind of velocities can I expect from a 22" barrel? Would shoot mostly 235gr bullets.

Why the .375" bore size and why 235's?

I bet you would have around the same case capacity as a 375 Whelen which can drive a 235 to 2475-2500 fps

I have several hundred 235 gr .375 bullets, an extra barrel blank and a intermediate length Mauser on my hands. Be a nice, lightweight rifle to carry in Grizz country where I live but I might just opt for the 376 Steyr instead. Probably less Hassel and can still run through the short Mauser at upwards of 2750 fps.

IIRC Rick Bin has done it, he called it the 375 Campfire.

Steyr would be a powerhouse on that action with 20 or 21-inch barrel having OACL at 3.110 and would require no real action adjustments for solid feed and extraction.

I went the Steyr route on this Mark X.

IF it was me, I would chamber the rifle in .375 Whelen, as those cases are EASILY reformed from .30-06 AND it's a KILLER w/o tearing your shoulder off with excess recoil. = Your targeted animals won't care that they were killed by a cheap/easily made/efficient caliber.

Btw, within 30-45 days, I'll have a .400 Brown-Whelen Improved Model 760 Remington that Jessie at JES will remodel for me, from my "garage sale" .30-06 that has a BADLY pitted barrel.
(The .400 B-WI is the most powerful cartridge that can be made from .30-06 cases.)

Jessie's work is peerless & money won't buy the "old school" 9.3x62mm Model 760 that he reformatted for me. =====> A 5-shot group, off the bench, from that rifle (presuming that I do my part) at 150M can be covered with a US quarter.

Thanks Tex, sounds great except it won't fit in a intermediate length Mauser. Would need the standard length 98 which I have bit it's for a different project. Will probably go with the Steyr and a 22" barrel. Think it would make for a darn good elk rifle in bear country. Overkill for elk if there is such a thing but I believe Mr Grizz would regret getting into an altercation with it.

Will the Intermediate length Mauser action accept a .308WCF case?? (I'm not sure that I've ever seen an "intermediate length" Mauser action.) = IF it will, there is a similar .375 and a .400 caliber wildcat that will do most anything that the reformed .30-06-based cartridges will.
(Obviously there are LOTS of Lake City .762 NATO brass around & for CHEAP. - I like CHEAP/efficient.)

I seriously doubt that "Papa Bear" would know the difference in being hit by either the ."short case" 375 or by the .400 caliber "little brothers" vs the .30-06 versions.

In case you haven't guessed, I'm partial to a BIG, "heavy for caliber", load for hunting anything that is likely to maul/gore/stomp/claw/eat my old & increasingly tender body.

Fyi, I talked to a hand-loader here in SATX last night on one of the TX gun forums & he calls his full-length/reformed 7.62 NATO case in .375, "the 9.5x51mm Lone Star Express". = He says that a GCCB (made out of wheel-weights) at 2000FPS will routinely do the "Texas heart shot" on elk & the other "introduced species" here in TX.

You could always look at the 375 Raptor a true SA that has proven to be an extremely accurate cartridge shooting 235s close to 2,600 fps and 350s at 2,250 fps. Your action, if barrel is throated properly would allow seating heavy for caliber bullets out to generous length and allow a significant boost powder capacity.
