I picked up another very nice kimber Montana in 270 wsm at a great price yesterday. I've never been a 270 fan so I'm thinking about sending it to pac nor or someone to put an 8 or faster twist 6.5 barrel on it. I'm deciding between the 6.5 prc and the 6.5 4s.
The Montana wsm mag box should work well with either. Wondering about the feed lips and geometry and if one case would be better than the other. I'm also trying to remember the preferred freebore on the 4s.

I would guess a lot of 6.5 PRC brass is going into Hornady ammo--and you can find that. Just did a quickie Google-check and found it listed in three places. (In my rifle it shoots very well, and afterward you have brass!)

Huntsman, let me re-phrase my earlier post. PRC has more factory support behind it. Therefore, brass should be more readily available; Hornady is betting on it. You're also seeing other makers turn out factory offerings in PRC. I haven't seen one factory gun offering in a 4s headstamp.
There is a reason the target shooter are still using the 6.5 x 284 over the 6.5 PRC. The 6.5 x 284 is a more accurate cartridge. Yes the 6.5 PRC is faster, but it doesn't shoot as good.

I have, shoot and load for all 3. Granted probably have more through the 284 chambering with it being around longer, but I’ve had ZERO problems with any 6.5 SAUMs, or PRCs far as tuning and getting them to shoot extremely well.
I don’t buy the initial marketing BS about the PRC feeding better than the SAUM. Mine have fed slicker than greased owl schit in anything I’ve run them through. But the PRC of course is getting the same factory backing as the CryMores, which ain’t a bad thing. ADG offering 7/6.5 SAUM brass is good to see.

I have been to matches where they were being shot in very capable hands. They just dont shoot as good. For a hunting rifle they are just fine. But for a 600 and 1000 match rifle no.

I’ve seen plenty of competitions and can’t remember the last time I seen a 6.5x284 in one.... of course we are talking two completely different types of matches here... sitting static at a bench and shooting paper does not interest me in the least...
All the 6.5s mentioned here are/can be extremely accurate and are more so separated by the shooter than the equipment... The 284 has been around for ages so it will have a cult following but that does not make it anymore accurate than a PRC or a 4S... The PRC being backed and promoted by Hornady will make it a mainstream caliber and plenty will drink the koolaid... I’ve noticed no difference in its accuracy over the 4s...
Not too long ago while in Logan NM we went out to a course and ran the course with 5 different 6.5s... 5 shooters each running the course once with each rifle... 80 targets to engage... The results for each caliber mimicked the shooters and not the calibers...
Using those particular results I doubt I’d run out and build a herd of 284’s...
Most comps seem to be using 6mm or at least that is what I’ve seen...
To the OP I’d lean towards the PRC at this point... Available brass and ammo at large retail stores will be a plus once it catches on...
Everyone knows the 6.5SAUM is more accurate than the 6.5x284 and thus more accurate than the PRC!

I think the only real advantage of the PRC is factory ammo especially if your rebarreling and can set it up properly for the SAUM.
I have a Montana in 7 wsm that I really like. I had another in 300 wsm too that I gave to a friend that I hunt with because he helped me with some work around the house. I just like the way they point and carry. I'm still burning a bunch of 162 amaxes in the 7 then I'll move to the 180. I use the 180 in my 28 now.
I'll probably just go pacnor because they'll make the barrel and install it. Who are the other good options?

i own a couple of very accurate 6.5x284 bat action rifles and a couple of 6.5x284 hunting rifles yes all are accurate and the 6.5 PRC probably accurate too ? but to be honest for target bench shooting the little 6 BR will kick any 6.5 rearend and with very little recoil. as far as for hunting cartridge both are good the big problem is can you find ammo if needed when you go hunting away from home ? probably not better bring a 30-06 all ma-pop stores have this old reliable cartridge any place in the world.

Bullets matter more than headstamps. Pass the 7 Whizzum Montucky and the 180 ELD's.796 BC at 2900fps. I only have a "few".

Based on BC and FPS what wins to the 2000 yard line the wsm with a 180 eld-m at 2950 ie (50 FPS faster than sugartits claims) or the 135 Atip at gap speeds. You can google them and get back to me.

I shot and worked loads up with a friends he also had a 6.5 wsm that I tuned a load for. The gap if memory serves was 147 at 3125 ish. He posted on this thread if you need a hint. LOL
My Gap built 4S sure the fück will get 3125 out of the 147 and 3200 out of the 135’s. Both 100ct sets of Bertram brass are over 6 loadings and hold primers like new so they are t being abused either.

Umm, 3200 aint 3350...........Secondly, can you share your source of brass? I have a switch barrel 8 twist 7 SAUM gunning 180 ELD's with an 8.5 twist 6.5 SAUM previously gunning 140 Bergers, now 147 ELD's..................................

I picked up another very nice kimber Montana in 270 wsm at a great price yesterday. I've never been a 270 fan so I'm thinking about sending it to pac nor or someone to put an 8 or faster twist 6.5 barrel on it. I'm deciding between the 6.5 prc and the 6.5 4s.
The Montana wsm mag box should work well with either. Wondering about the feed lips and geometry and if one case would be better than the other. I'm also trying to remember the preferred freebore on the 4s.

Worked the PRC barrel a smidge today with it’s maiden 40 rounds of 147g Hornady Match. I wasn’t doing backflips over the accuracy with the 147g...Handloads will tighten it up nicely...It is a sweet handling rifle. I’m happy with it. 😎

I picked up another very nice kimber Montana in 270 wsm at a great price yesterday. I've never been a 270 fan so I'm thinking about sending it to pac nor or someone to put an 8 or faster twist 6.5 barrel on it. I'm deciding between the 6.5 prc and the 6.5 4s.
The Montana wsm mag box should work well with either. Wondering about the feed lips and geometry and if one case would be better than the other. I'm also trying to remember the preferred freebore on the 4s.

She’s looking at the gauge I posted a picture of. The reamer we have cuts .081 then it gets a bushing cutter for the last .039” but she’s so giddy about picking people apart she misses the fact few give two fûcks what she thinks.

Mine has 081, works great with 139 Scenar and 130 VLD. Send your stuff to George and sharpen your knife....
And my PRC reamer has .200" freebore, but knowing going in I was using a long action, OAL was a non issue.

I have RP 7saum and Norma 7 saum. the Norma in .293”collet has a wall thickness of .015” gives .002” of neck tension.
I’m inclined to turn or bore .0005” off them. It would give .0015” of clearance in the chamber with a .292”collet.
It’s also way over thinking it.

No I’m not. Got the brass already prepped a while back thanks to Sendero Man (Scott) and have also picked up some loads in prepped brass by Copper Creek.
I’ve seen no issues with newer lots of Hornady brass that George is selling either..

Cleaning very 20 rounds and it takes one patch of Mpro7 and two dry and it’s clean. Dang thing is like glass inside.
