Have a NOS L461 Never barreled action. Was thinking about building a 6.8spcII but now this 6 ARC comes along. Might do a 22 7/8 or whatever the standard old Sako length barrel was in a McM Sako stock. Might go 20” in a Sako Varmint contour barrel and stock. Any other stock options I should consider? Edge Compact with 18” #1 barrel? I’m all over the place with this one....

Can the bolt on an L461 accommodate the 6 ARC case head? Think it will be problematic to get it to feed? Did those 6ppc Sakos feed well?

I built a 6-223 on a A1 and converted a bansner mini Mauser stock - it turned out well. #2 benchmark barrel, if I remember right it was 22”.

If you go with a varmint weight Barrel, wildcat composites makes a stock, and it’s light, and extremely stiff. Excellent stock.

How difficult was it to modify the Bansner for the Sako AI? I modified a Bansner for a Colt Light Rifle once.

Wasn't that a PPC? If so, a Grendel case feeds perfectly.

Very easy. The biggest difference is around the tang - you need to add a little material there.

I ended up building a mate to this one in 222 for the new owner. Unfortunately bansner was with legendary arms or maybe just left and this stock was no longer available. We used a McMillan patterned on a actual sako stock that accuflite sells. I thought it turned out nice, but the owner says the bansner is a better fit for the little action. It should be noted that the McMillan was a standard fill and it should have been edge fill.
The best would be if wildcat started producing a sporter stock for these. They are lighter and stiffer than bansners but unfortunately they only offer the varmint style at this time.

bigJ: How do you rate Wildcat compared to McMillan?

Different animal. I will break down my thoughts on the two. But wildcat is much more similar to Bansners stocks.

McMillan:
Good: tons of models available, drop in, nicely finished
Bad: expensive (about $1100 after exchange and shipping for us Canadians.) Not very light if you're into ultralights, long wait times.

Wildcat:
Good: Light (17oz blanks on most models = 19oz finished) stiff, very accommodating (different weights, different level of finish etc) much cheaper (blanks are mostly $300USD). Much faster to get - days or weeks not months.
Bad:limited number of models to choose from, mostly sold as unfinished blanks.

Wildcat casts their inletting, they don’t machine it like McMillan. This means a mold is needed for each stock and inlet. And they arent a huge company so models are limited. The majority of them are sold as blanks, although they now offer completely fit/finished stocks for Canadians.

Don’t get me wrong, mcmillans are awesome but at $1000+ and 6month waits, I think I am done with them.

There's 9 oz of weight difference in the rifles, with the 222 being heavier . Definite difference in the balance feel of the rifle.

The 6x45 is my favorite, though the crows and magpies are going to catch hell with the 222 later this week.

The Baby Sakos are too trite in COAL,to get the goody out of a 223 and of course worse yet in 270,because 6mm boolits are longer. I've a "few". Hint.

All flavors of Grendel are a better Mouse Trap in said platform,due the much lesser case length,as compared to the 223 and it's spawn. Hint.

Because I shoot every chambering cited,I'd got 7" RPM 224 Grendel and never look back. Killer brass abounds(Lapooey),as do dies(Redding bushings),you can scoot 88's to meaningful velocities in a 20" spout(I've a few) and the 6mm cain't keep pace. Hint.

The PPC Improved has been around for many moons and Hornady is connecting more dots,than all others combined.The Deuce is a steaming piece of schit in compasrison. Should add that the first move tomorrow,will be to toss a .378" S/A 700 in a box,to meet it's 7" RPM Bart' spout and to yield another 224 Grendel. No thang to feed in ADL,BDL or in AICS footprint DBM. Hint.

Exceptional in Krunchenticker mag confines too,if only obviously.

224 Grendel is where it's at and ESPECIALLY in a Baby Sako,because you connect all dots(throat,twist and COAL) rather easily. Mounting system sucks ass,due ring spacing though. Hint.

Thinkin' I prefer the 224 Grendel to the 22 BR,mainly because I shoot 'em all.

What are my chances of getting a Grendel case to feed through a Kimber Montana, assuming I can find a smith willing to open the 223 bolt face? Anyone have some insight to share?

A pard is shooting the 22 Grendel in F class competition, and has shot several 1" groups at 600 yards. He will not tell me the load because it is warm with the 75g Bergers.

Good brass is a foundation, saves you money and frustration....start at the start. Don't get douped into schitt for brass anything that is the latest and greatest..

If I had a spare baby sako I would be looking at a 17 Fireball.

I expect Lapua will provide 6 ARC brass once 6 ARC demand exceeds 6.5 Grendel demand. That should happen pretty quickly.

In the meantime, there's Hornady brass, or resized 6.5 Grendel.

(I know you weren't necessarily talking about the 6 ARC, but it's definitely in the "latest and greatest" category, even though it's really a well known quantity.)
