Picked up a nice old tobacco humidor/turkey beard box....stole it for $26 bucks the turkey beards will never know it's missing the lock and has someone else's initials on top.

Free tip...throw a moth ball in there about once a year.

Never used a beard box, I just use a 12 ga shell cut off even with the brass and glue them into it.
How are you storing them in the box, just laying them in there?

I just dip the the meaty end in Mule Team Borax let them dry and pitch them in the box.

Several years ago I lost about a half a box of turkey beards to some kind of tiny beetle like insect...literally turned them into dust lucky I discovered it before I lost the entire box.

Well I'll be, something new every day. Never heard of a beard box before.
Posted By: LFC Re: Beard boxes - 07/14/22
I guess first you have to kill enough to need a box....
Posted By: mud_bogger Re: Beard boxes - 07/14/22
always tossed them in the trash along with the feathers
Posted By: pullit Re: Beard boxes - 07/14/22
I could not tell you where several of mine got off to, but a few years ago, I did start trying to keep and display them. Unless the spurs are really big, they usually pitch them with the feathers the way mud bogger does with the beards.

Hey LFC, numbers 58 and 59 this year with a Paul Meek scratch box. Those are just scratch box birds not everything else. No offense taken!!

I've got enough turkey beards to make a pretty good sized broom....but other than as just a trophy, does anyone have a "use" for them?
Same for spurs.
I keep all the wing bones to make calls.
Posted By: pullit Re: Beard boxes - 07/14/22
they collect dust pretty good

Deer horns, turkey spurs and beards are momentos of the hunt....some people are into taxidermy I'm not.

Only real use they serve is a reminder of the hunts....a lot of the horns and individual beards and spurs get lost to memory. Some will always stand out in your memory.

I notch my box and pot calls when they are used on a turkey hunt the notches only mean something to me. I have two boxes one I made in 1995 with about 80 notches the other in 2007 with well over a 100 notches. The notches represent to me kills the calls were in on.

I still have the 3 point rack from the first deer I killed when I was 13.
I'll keep keeping my deer horns, turkey beards and spurs I would never consider throwing a trophy from a hunt in the trash.

A 24 foot spur chain is impressive if you're ever in my shop and get to see it.

To me they're just a mometo or reminder of the hunts.

My wife asked me the other day if I wanted them cremated with me....I didn't reply.

Is she trying to tell you something...lol

Don't agree with you too often, Luther. But 100% on the above.

I do have some taxidermy, though. But however one decides to preserve the memories of his hunts..........one day that's all any of us will have. Ain't gonna be able to run ridges........climb clffs...........walk miles.......... travel to other states or countries. Just gonna have the recliner and the stories and memories we've preserved.......however we chose to do so.

You can simply pull the beard right off and no “meat” or flesh will be attached, no need for borax or other preservation methods. Just grab at the base and pull it off.

I've saw people pull them off and I've saw beards screwed up by pulling them off.
Posted By: pullit Re: Beard boxes - 08/09/22
I too have seen more than one beard messed up by pulling them. I just take a knife and cut them off.
Posted By: Sasha_and_Abby Re: Beard boxes - 08/09/22
I throw them out after a few years... probably dumped a five gal bucket full because of no way to keep them without shedding... wish there was a better way.
Posted By: pullit Re: Beard boxes - 08/09/22
Mine don't shed, I cut the plastic off of a shotgun shell, punch out the old primer and make a loop out of duck decoy cord (you can use anything to make the loop). I put a little hot melt glue in the bottom of the hull and insert the beard. I then fill up the rest of the hull with hot melt glue. You can hang the loop on a peg or whatever to display them. I have been doing this for long time and the beards are still in good shape.

I'm not surprised that it can be screwed up. I've yet to mess one up and have seen numerous others get pulled and not messed up. I'm probably due I suppose.

As easy as it is to slice a beard off with a decently sharp knife and borax it in a sammich baggie along with the legs............ One baggie. One zip tie. Wait a couple months and it's all preserved basically forever. Can't see any reason to go pulling them off. Seems silly to me, but...............that's just me.
Posted By: WL205 Re: Beard boxes - 08/10/22
Same as it’s silly to me to have to cut it off and borax it, when I just pull them off.
Posted By: Yoder409 Re: Beard boxes - 08/10/22
And there ya have it................

To each, his own, I reckon.
Posted By: LFC Re: Beard boxes - 08/10/22
Then we have the guy that throws turkey beards out by the 5 gallon bucket.....
Posted By: pullit Re: Beard boxes - 08/10/22
I can not lie, I lost several when I moved years ago, but I try to keep them.
Posted By: Crittergitter04 Re: Beard boxes - 09/07/22
I wish i woulda done a better job at keeping up with beards and feet. They dissapear or start shedding. Since they just lay around the garage.
Posted By: Winnie70 Re: Beard boxes - 09/13/22
Only one I care about is the one with the longest spurs I got many years ago…. 1 9/16 & 1 5/8. Don’t remember how long beard was but it was bringing up the rear LOL.
