Very nice!
Nice, looks like a beautiful morning too. 👍
Awesome.
And I see you used your call! How cool is that.
I think you were in my woods, I recognize that grapevine in the background. Pretty cool doing it old school.
So what's the story? Bust a flock and call it back?
It WAS a beautiful morning !!!!!

Too warm.............the deer hunting has sucked. So I decided to scrap that for the day and go shoot a turkey. Couldn't get my brother to go. So I went it alone. Knew the birds would be somewhere on our one high ridge or thereabouts. Just not sure which end. Got to a good listening spot pre-daylight and ends up the birds were about 100 yards to my right............ right below me through wide open timber. I was NOT in a good place. But I started talking to them with the tube call. In the woods, the yelp sounds like a turkey in a culvert pipe. But the kee-kee is just pretty darned impressive. About 10 minutes later I hear a cluck below me....... to my left. I'm in a crap spot to be set up. But there was a flock coming from there. So I yelped a few times and kee-kee'd. I could see 10 or a dozen of them coming around the bottom of the slope. But one or more was drifting uphill toward me. I kee-kee'd again and got the gun ready. One hen popped up in front of a maple down below me. But there were a couple small saplings in the way. Waited til she took a step and lowered the boom on her. Pretty much the end of the quick story.

Confession................ I was GONNA do it old skool and take my 1933 Model 21 Winchester 12 gauge SxS. But, I deferred to my standby turkey hammer for this hunt.

The tube call WAS the only one I took this morning. Felt funny not having a box with me or a diaphragm in my cheek. But the tube call was either gonna do it or it wasn't.

Worked like poison.
Excellent. Miss those woods this time of year.
very cool, congratulations
Nice hen I thought you didn't care to shoot turkeys in the fall ?

Thanks for all the kind words, fellers.

Truthfully............. I really don't. But this morning was kinda a different deal. Wanted to go call one in with the call that had laid in a box for 4 decades. So, at this moment........that doofy little film can has called in the first bird I ever killed and the last bird that I have killed. I would have been even happier had my brother come along and shot the bird, instead. But he had stuff to do, so......

The hunt, itself was sorta neat in that the birds weren't broken, but 30 minutes fresh off the limb. Just called the whole wad of them around the hill. From what I saw of the other 10-12, I think I ended up shooting about the smallest of the group. But she stuck her fat head up first, so........ Just wasn't her day.

Gonna do her up in the smoker.
Hen wing bones make the best yelpers!

Mature hen wingbones from about an 8 to 9 lb hen make a nice caller....

With populations declining most places hen wing bones might be like getting hens teeth again.

I may just peel them out of the carcass and have a go at that. Never tried before.
Four decades later the man awakens
Nice work.

Years ago my young son and I were kinda-sorta squirrel hunting and busted a flock. Got out my ancient Tiny Coiner and called some back and he busted one, I would’ve had one too, but I was carrying my .22/45 MKIII with an empty chamber and the POS misfed as usual.

Having them around and in season makes thing more interesting in the Fall. In this county, the season is very short, and the birds are very much a sometime thing, until rifle season for deer anyway when they’re off the menu.

And THEN..........they're EVERYWHERE. 😁
The first of several segments of fall turkey season here just closed. Ours is 10/22/22-11/4, 11/23 and 11/24, 12/5-12/31, and 1/14/23-1/28/23.
Nice Yoder!

Just got back from some bowhunthing up by my place in NE WI. I usually buy a fall turkey tag but didn't this year, so guess what I was covered up with?! Lol! They had me surrounded and, eventually, started roosting all around me. Man, do they make a racket walking through the woods! Rut's on up there too, was in the middle of it the other night. All kinds of grunting, bucks chasing does helter skelter as fast as they could run. Nothing close enough, or slow enough, to offer any kind of a shot, but really neat to see and hear. Turkeys could have cared less...
Good deal !!! The bowhunting has sucked, here. Been in the 70's..........one day 80. Looking like starting Saturday it's gonna cool off some.

That is the way it always works, don't know how they know but they know when you don't have a tag...lol
Our fall season goes Sep 15-Nov 14 and given the large number of birds I see just walking around, I might actually try next year I guess.

Same principle as (back when we had grouse) grouse turned into deer in grouse season and deer turned into grouse in deer season. 😁
