I am looking forward to spring gobbler!

Had a pretty disappointing Deer season, hoping to make it up on a couple turkey! Going to try to connect with a Eastern and Osceola this year.

A little more than two months here before opening day, but I'm ready for it to get here.

Going to try a 20 gauge this year, if I can find some good Tungsten shot/ammo.

I've used a 20 exclusively the last 5 years-- Federal Heavyweight #6s-- plenty of pattern density and energy to 40 yards!

I drew Illinois and Wisconsin tags, really looking forward to it! I missed all of deer firearms season last year due to a really bad back. Had some extensive spinal surgery middle of December that worked out better than I could have imagined! Now I'm on the mend and committed to getting back in shape so I can use those tags. I've been thinking I need a new, dedicated, 20 gauge turkey gun to celebrate! Lol!

Listened all the way through. I was totally taken in. Sat here with my eyes closed and was lost in the sounds. Sure was a touch of the turkey woods for a while. The heart rate appears to have returned to an almost near normal now.

Think I'll go and hold the 20ga and grin a little before I turn in.

May 1 is our opening day. My calls will be one pot, a diaphragm, and an old (1986) Dennis Kirk Walnut box. When I was a younger man I had a "Turkey Jacket" with a bunch of pockets all filled with all the latest calls, Camo umbrella, 3 sets of gloves, a backpack loaded with various and different regalia, all the newest gadgets. Somehow inspite of all that equipment I managed to fill my tags each year after I learned to call them. Got older and found my voice would work, a diaphragm will work, my old glass pot will work, and if all else fails the old Kirk box almost always works.

I still wear that old jacket. It got rather sun bleached so some Rustolium, and Sharpies have helped remake somewhat of a breakup pattern, As long as I don't move they come in. I won't shoot unless they are inside 35 yards. Get most that I call except Jakes. I just mess with them and see how close they will come in. Usually about 12 feet.

Shamanic Podcasts

For me, the month before the start of Spring Gobbler Season is podcast season. I go out with my trusty umbrella mic and record the turkeys as best as I can. Come season, I take the Digital Audio Recorder off the umbrella and keep it running while I hunt.

The past few seasons have been busts. Either the turkeys have been uncooperative or the hardware. Last year, my favorite bunch of birds just up and disappeared on me. They were silent for the whole season. It actually made for better gobbler hunting, but I didn't have any hens to record. When it came time to actually cap a gob, the recorder wasn't working. I can't wait for March to give it another try.

I hate to spend the money, but I'm going to give Apex Ammo a shot (pun intended) this year.

Saw two strutting saturday afternoon!

I'm ready and have been since I put the turkey choke in the Browning last December. I keep the calls in the vest which is stored in a bin with the ammo. It takes me longer to find appropriate foot wear than the rest of the gear.

I've been seeing 40+ birds in the cornfields out back. I will see them until we get enough snow to make it too difficult to reach the waste corn. The birds will be back once the snow melts. Then they will disappear once the season starts if anything like the last couple years. I used to have a couple opportunities a day but now take the first shot offered. I am not averaging as mature of birds as I used to. The toms have been real silent too, something that happened only once several years ago.

Apex always sells out, like now, on most of their ammo line. I use Federal Heavyweight TSS 3" 20 gauge # 7 or #9 out to 55 yards with killing results, and they are cheaper!
