What is your most effective set up for turkey hunting regarding your sighting system, choke and best shot load? Anybody shooting a ghost ring style sighting setup? Happy hunting!

I really like a Burris Fastfire, especially with my eyes in their mid-40s

Last year i shot Federal TSS and a Rhino choke in my 12 ga and factory full in my 20. Both were solid 40 yard guns with that set up but not as good as they could be. Shooting Sumtoy chokes this year and getting slightly better results - still not up to potential - but plenty good to hunt with.

Next season i may switch to Apex or Nitro TSS shells. Not sure why i’m Not getting the pattern density at 40 yards i expect - the 12ga is stock and the 20ga has had the forcing cone lengthened

Have used regular rear before but have a set coming plus the ghost ring aperture.

Star Dot Invector Plus choke.

3" LB #5 for fields or Thug #6 for timber.

Browning Gold NWTF 3" gun.

Silver bead, Remchoke Xfull, 2 1/8 oz of bismuth #4 in 26” SP10.

Kinda sucks if you have to carry it several miles but you asked for effective.

Also killed a truckload of gobblers with a Mossberg 185 3” boltgun with a polychoke and a camo paint job. 3” unplated Winchester SuperX 6s with the choke a 1/4 turn past full. It’s a shredder and kills at both ends, ugly as used dog schit anyway so you don’t mind dragging it around crawling through the rocks and cactus.

Rem 1187 20 gauge with 21” barrel, ic 560 choke and a Burris ff3 sight. Hand loaded “little hammer” tss load

I think too many turkey hunters over complicate things. I have killed a ton of turkey with a 20 gauge 870 and factory full choke barrel. Lately, I kill them with a 20 gauge flintlock trade gun with a cylinder bore.
Any shotgun works if you take time to pattern the gun and load and learn to call turkey. If you don't want to call them in close, may as well shoot them with a rifle.

That's how I see it. Your mileage may differ and that's OK too.

The bead at the end of the barrel and my eye for sights; whatever constriction Browning uses for Modified or whatever the choke that came with the gun is; and whatever turkey loads using 4,5, or 6 shot I grab out of the bin. I am getting less fussy about shells as I hunt in the woods and a long shot is 30 yards. A friend has killed her last 3 or 4 turkeys with her pheasant load of an ounce of 5s and the standard Full choke tube. As has been mentioned, bring the birds in close enough and much does not matter.

I think you're probably right. I do have a scope one of my guns, and fiber optic sights on the other, and after market chokes. That's mostly to compensate for aging eyes. As far as shells go, I don't use those 4 or 5 dollar a piece ones. You don't need to overthink things. Call them in close enough, and most any gun and setup will work.
