Anybody use it? I had some given to me from the Oregon manufacture and wondered what anyone thought of it. I do use a Kicks choke on my 12 Gauge turkey guns so is it alright to use it with the kicks chokes?
Posted By: Bearcat74 Re: Hevishot - 03/18/20

I shoot hevi 6’s and 7’s through a Kicks .660. It’s the real deal.
Posted By: Highoctane Re: Hevishot - 03/18/20

Good stuff but TSS is better. BUT, if it was given to you it's hard to beat FREE...Good luck
Posted By: humdinger Re: Hevishot - 03/19/20
I use it with a primos choke because I hunt federal land that requires non toxic shot.

I started with 5 shot because I used 5 in lead.... Now I use the mixed shot size becaause Ive learned about the benefits of denser shot.

I like they put a heavy load in it.

It works.

I understand that this stuff is good, but I ain't paying $56-$63 for 5 shotgun shells.

Shells are the cheapest part of any hunt but I can understand where you coming from. I thought the same until I tried it. If I used a 12 ga I probably wouldn't use TSS but I use a 20 ga and TSS makes the little 20 ga a 12 ga without all the retina detaching recoil!! Good luck this season..

Get yourself a .410 and it's only $25 a box. Mine lands today. Already have the choke and shells.

Before I started hand loading my 20 gauge tss I shot the hevi-shot magblends in a 3.5 12 gauge. It worked very well and only stopped using it because I can do the same thing with my 20 gauge and I don’t like all the recoil.
It will kill with authority

Federal Hevi 13 and TSS are different shot. Hevi 13 is far less expensive. I have began using Federal Hevi 13 #7 about 10 years ago in my 12 ga (Stoeger 2000) The Hevi 13 in #7 gave me a much denser pattern than the best lead #6 that I had previously used. Took turkeys out as far as the #6.
I found it DEADLY! I now use it in a 20ga #7 and it gives me great patterns. My longest shot with 20ga has been 43 yards. Bang, instantly dead bird.
It has lengthened my range and allowed a lighter, smaller shotgun; 20 ga.single shot, #7 Hevi13 shot. I love the stuff.

I bought some for a back-up gun because it was cheap. Hevi was the best for a period, but was surpassed by heavyweigh 15g/cc and now TSS. Kicks was marked lead only but lots of people used Hevi with them.

That’s the most expensive factory tss load on the market, and isn’t the regular hevi13. You can find the tss much cheaper. I snagged a case of it in the off season for $270 shipped, so $27 bux a box. Hard to beat that performance for the price.

I've been using 12 Ga, 3" Hevi-Shot Magnum Blends through a Pure Gold .670 extended choke tube since Environ-metal introduced the load. I'm intrigued by the Federal TSS but I have enough Hevi-Shot Magnum Blends (four boxes) to last me another 10 to 12 years, not changing now.
Posted By: Sako76 Re: Hevishot - 03/25/20
I shoot a Reminton 11-87 12 Ga. turkey gun with 3 1/2" Hevi-Shot Mag Blends. I'm 3 for 3 on kills over 50 yards although I prefer them much closer. Good stuff.
Posted By: humdinger Re: Hevishot - 03/25/20
Side question - I have hevishot in #5 and mixed blend and I tend to pattern with the 5 (when I put my red dot on) and hunt with the mix, but never compared the patterns.

I assume the blended is better stuff.

Anyone keep pictures of their patterns of blended?

Any performance difference?
Pellet count?
Posted By: MOGC Re: Hevishot - 03/25/20
The Blend actually patterned worse for me than the straight 3-2-6 load. I shoot a Benelli M1 24" barrel with a Kick's .660" GT choke and squeeze right at 185 pellets in 10" @ 40 measured yards. It's a beautiful 60/40 pattern dead on the bead. Pure gobbler poison!
Posted By: Bearcat74 Re: Hevishot - 03/25/20

I was straight 3-2-6 until I shot the 3-2-7 from my 12 gauge. I’ve never shot the blends and 5 hevi pattern worse than 4 lead for me.

6’s ran mid-high 160’s and 7’s were 230-240 @ 42yds from my 20” barrel I’ve seen the 7’s work devastatingly at 50yds.

Pass me the straight 7’s

I also shoot a Kicks .660

Agree!
I shoot them (#7 Hevi Shot 13) in my 20ga. 20 inch barrel single shot. Bang, flop, flutter, over. I'll not be searching for anything different.

I did ALOT of shellology and chokeology stuff in 01 and 02
with mossberg 835,s
Prior to that I used a savage stevens 12 ga 311 sxs
Shot hevi 13 3.5" 2 and a quarter # 6,s back in the day
225 in 10 at 40 with SSX .670
Waylay birds with that load.
Shot nitro rays 4c 5c 7h 501l load with rhino.680
310 to 325 in 10 at 40
Waylay birds
Shot 3.5 magnum blend with rhino.680
275 280 in 10 at 40
Waylay bitds

It seems all manufactuers make some good shells
Get people on em like crack addicts
Then start scrimping.
I have noticed this thruout the years
Breaking down shells and counting pellets is the proof.
Even have weighed just the pellet payloads.
The 1st 2 yrs the Win LB 3.5 # 6 shells came out they shot 250 to 265 outta my 835 with a Rhino .670
Waylay birds.
Many others have noticed a downward trend with them
I tore one of my 1st yr ones down and a new one
50 + less pellet in the new ones once you break down the shot lok compound and count em
The shot lok matrix on the new one was also less firm and already cracked in many places instead of firm and solid and uncracked like the 1st gen shells.
Also poa poi shifts from shell to shell happen
Many on Oldgobbler.com also have experienced samr things.

This picture is from last friday with a .670 SSX strut stopper extreme
A 160 into 10 at 40
I made no sight adjustment off this.
Fugg that.....

I am seriously think of getting into tss loading
Cause im tired of being basically ripped off and getting hit with bait and switch games by shell manufacturers.

These is today with hevi 13 3.5 2 1/4 th oz # 7
214 in 10 (adjusted) at 40
SSX .670
Temp 46° which is a factor
Made no sight adjustment of this.

I can hang with this pattern hunting tommorow morning and the rest of the season.
Hevi 13 3.5 2 1/4th oz # 7
I'm sure these 7,s can waylay a bird if given the shot.
Rhino .670, mossberg 835 ulti mag, tru glo pro series sights, limbsaver pad, 14 oz of sinkers stuffed in buttstock with wally world bags to hold em in place.
46°
243 in 10 at 40.
Range count was 238
Recount at home came to 243.
I probably coulda tweaked my sights about 1.5 to 2 inches right.
Was shooting off bags and bench.
But then shooting in the feild I might jerk a little right which is not uncommon. This pattern will be fine.
No sight adjustment made.
Temps in the mid 60,s to mid 70,s probably pick up another 15 to 25 in the pellet count.

Hevi 13 and mag blend have a 10 dollar rebate per box up to 2 boxes going on now
So end cost is around 21 bucks a box of 5.

I use Hevi #6 with 12ga, 2 3/4, 1952 Wingmaster, Mod choke. Deadly out to 30-35 yards.
Posted By: Ky221 Re: Hevishot - 04/05/20
Let me start off by saying idc what anyone shoots and I wish everyone the best of luck with filling their tags.

But I never dreamed that I’d hear grown men complaining over the recoil generated by turkey loads. Especially when you shoot it what? maybe once or twice a year minus the patterning board?

No ego here, I don’t shoot magnum rifles unless you count the 22WMR, etc etc. I understand that the TSS patterns well, I also understand it for younger shooters, shoulder injury shooters etc.

But when I can pay 10-15$ for 10 3” 12s vs whatever TSS runs all just to save a little recoil that I likely won’t feel in the first place. I’m just drawing a blank. It’s not like you’re taking it on a doveshoot. What also strikes me as odd, on the local forums here in KY, I read about the TSS allowing guys to kill birds at 70yards, then the same guys tell will turn around and say turkey hunting with a rifle is unethical because the name of the game is to call them in close.....really makes me scratch my head. Shooting turkeys with a rifle is illegal in my state but I wish it were as that’s how I would hunt them. But it seems kind of oxymoronic that when someone suggests making it legal this is the attitude it’s met with.....

YMMV

i just feel Hevi-shot is way over priced so i just buy 3 in no.4 lead turkey loads works just fine, just had i puffed up gobbler in the field next to my home about a 10 inch beard our season is not open yet. wish you all a great spring turkey season ,Pete53

For the guys that question why you need to consider a hevishot or non-lead product, sometimes you are forced to by federal land rules not to shoot lead on it.

Otherwise I would be trying winchester longbeard.
