Long time reader, don't post much but appreciate the wealth of knowledge of all things Savage on this forum.
I recently acquired a Savage 1899 and would appreciate any information the experts here may be willing to share. Mostly interested in Model, date of manufacture etc. This gun is obviously not all original but I got it for an excellent price (plus 60 rounds of ammo) and I am more of a shooter than a collector so I am fine. This is my fourth 99, yes they are somewhat addictive
Details
Savage 1899 Model Takedown - missing takedown latch - space fitted with brass plate, doesn't look bad but.....suspect it may have been converted to non-takedown but I haven't tried to take it down and will probably just leave it alone.
Serial# - 28049X(1926?)
Caliber: 303 Savage
Barrel Length: 20 inches
Barrel Address: Utica, N.Y.
Front site: Integral with brass blade
Rear site: Buckhorn - suspect replacement as bluing does not match the rest of the gun
Rotor: Brass
Stocks: Straight grip, no cracks, obvious refinish, but match- schnable end front
Butt plate: Hard plastic, unmarked - pretty sure replacement
Metal - 80% no rust or pitting just worn
Lever case coloring - present but faded - 60%
No extra holes
Locks up tight and everything seems to work, have not fired yet but will when time allows. It appears to be 100% functional

Thanks in advance for any information.

99-F. Given that it does not have a metal butt plate it might have a replacement butt stock. Does the stock have the flat pads on the side? Or, might have replaced a recoil pad...is it a straight cut or curved?

No pistol grip, no checkering would make it a late 1925 99F.

The 99F was a continuation of the 1899H, Savage just changed names for them in 1921 with solid frame 1899H's becoming 99E's, and takedowns becoming 99F's. Made up to 1940..

I love my 99F in 303. Took a nice 7 point buck with it last year. I was shooting Winchester 190 grain Silver Tips. If you shoot the 190’s, remember that at 300 yards they have about 28 inches of drop.

Thank you for the information and my apologies for the delinquent response, been dealing with a little natural disaster called Laura and my connectivity is spotty at best.

Rick99 - It is a straight butt stock and I am sure the pad has been replaced with a generic plastic one.

Thank you all.

Jmac4, when anyone comes on this forum requesting information, and doesn't supply at least one picture of said jewel, we hunt them down and put Biden/Harris stickers on their cars and signs in their yards! grin
just sayin!

Deerstalker, understood. One day when things return to some form of normalcy I’ll post some pics of my 99s. Internet is just too sketchy to attempt that now.
