Just wonder if anyone is contemplating selling a 1945-early 1950ish 99EG in 250 Savage. Like the checkered versions vs the older pre 1940 smoothie's. Want one stock, ie. no buttpad or receiver drilling. Have been checking the classifieds for some time with no luck, also GunBroker and Guns International. GB and GI ones usually have something that steers me clear and/or are wanting to much IMO, guess that's the new norm for 99's right now.

Had a sack over my head and my pants down about three weeks ago on a nice one out of one of the NE states. Really nice shape, all original, talked with gunshop seller. He advised selling for one of his customers that was part of his late Dad's collection. Advised that it hadn't been shot much and very well cared for. First 5-7 day or so bidding went without one bid. Could have bid on at the last and had it for around $1100, but I was bidding on a Smith and Wesson Model 27 5" revolver at the time so let it go. The Smith 27 bidding went nuts and by the time it was sold, the EG had expired. On the second 5-7 day listing the last hour or so frenzy took it I believe up to $1600. Snooze ya lose!!!! Will consider any offers if any of ya want to part with one. smile

I don't have one in 250 but I do have three EGs, two 50s-era 300s and one prewar 300. While I am a long time fan of the 50s era 99s, I do have to say that a good prewar EG is a cut above those that came after the war. Its just one of those things that's hard to put a name on but you can sense it when you pick one up. Same as with the pre vs post war Winchester 94s.

Didn't the checkered prewar EG's just start in 1940 and shortly after that very few were made until after 45 (end of WW2). If I can recall reading Dave Royals book, the wood on EG's in around 1940 when they started checkering them was a tighter grain, higher quality wood. I'd go for a 1940 era one with no problem. I've put my want list for a EG for those made in the 1945-50/51 or so because some of what I've read of the early mid 50 99's had this and that changed from earlier ones, ie' steel rotors instead of brass. I could be all wrong on this, but that's what I've gleaned from reading books and seen on forum posts.

Very close. Checkered EG's actually started at the end of 1939, but quite a few were made in 1940-1942. I haven't seen any real difference to the stock from the 1940 era to the 1950's, though the stock does change a bit when you get close to 1950 with a bit heavier of a schnabel, etc.

1941 99EG in 250 here.

If you could live with a 300, your search will become easier and cheaper.
Posted By: Savage94C Re: Savage EG 250 Caliber - 09/27/20
True words there 'RAS' reference the availability and probably $$$. I've noticed on GB and GI there are alot more 99EG 300's offered than 250's and depending on condition a few dollars less. Can't recall if it was in Royals book or Murray's that it stated that more EG's were produced in 300 Savage than any other caliber and are more obtainable. If it was model only I wanted, I'd maybe consider that route, but l love that 250/3000 caliber. I do have a 99G Takedown already, scoped with a Weaver 330 on a Stith mount. Have original rear sight and box the Stith came in with instructions. Also have a PW 99R in 300 Savage and two Remington 81's in 300, so I'm pretty well set in that caliber. Also have a Ruger 77 top tang safety Leupold scoped in 250 Savage that is a 'reach out and touch em' killer on coyote. Like the little heavier bullet for wind buckin abilities over a smaller 22 caliber. Never got into the .243, 22/250, or offshoot modern calibers for fox/coyote.

As I stated I love the 250 as my 75-87 grain handloads are accurate and the caliber isn't a kicker like some. Also, I'd like a Savage 99 lever gun with the Schnabel fore end in 250 Savage just to shoot with the iron sights. I don't want to take the scope and Stith on and off on my 99G to do so, that's why I'm looking for an EG in 250. I know that some may regard the 300 as a better deer gun, but Iowa law doesn't permit any bottleneck rifle's for hunting deer, just a few specified straight wall cartridge's. Doubt I'll ever go out of state hunting, just love the guns and killing milk jugs full of water, large tin cans, and tearing up paper with them. Doubt I'll ever go to war either with my assortment of WW1/WW2 bolt guns or Garands that terrorize my backstop or a local abandoned sand quarry. Great guns and fun shooters. grin grin
Nice lookin EG Calhoun!!!

Nothing wrong with a 250 in a Savage levergun.

Save for the checkering, the most significant differences between the stocks of pre and post WWII EGs I've seen is that the 50-s era rifles have a pronounced hump on the butt stock behind the tang that the earlier guns don't and the forearms are thicker. I suspect Savage added more wood in these areas to mitigate the cracking behind the tangs and the forward part of the forearm you see on earlier 99s.

If I was going to get a pre-mil in 250, I would get a post war 99R. I do have one and it’s a laser. I think I have 6 Savage 99s in 250, and the 99R is the most accurate. The 99A is the most handy. The 1899 Deluxe is the most pretty. The 99H barrel band is the most cool!

Ifin I were given the choice, I'd probably take a First Edition 99E in 250 over a 99EG in 250, BUT, they're pretty scarce and alot pricier, although if not out of line, I'd sell the wife's jewelry and tell her they must have been stolen.. eek grin Nah told her once that that would be a good gun funding idea, she advised I'd end up in the freezer..... Anyway, if reasonable, I'd be really tempted to buy.....Paid more than what I've seen the 99E's sell for for a few other wants and not needs. smile I'd be happy with a EG though in the 1940 through real early 50's without a doubt.(or late 30's if it was checkered).

Keith your 1899 is nice looking, In my area 99's are a rare commodity to be had except buying online or maybe someone on the forum selling one. I was in Des Moines last weekend at the 'Big Show' at the Iowa State Fairground. Only three 99's to be seen. Several really hard used ones (pretty rough IMO), not sure of models selling for around $800 and a nice I believe it was a G in 250 with Stith mount, Weaver 330 Scope, original rear sight, and had a Lyman peep mounted. Not to bad of shape, wanted I believe north of $2000 for it. Just don't see many in Iowa or the Remington 8/81's that I'm fond of also.

How about a matched pair of 1961 and 1962 99F's in 250 and 358 respectively?

OK, UPDATE!!!! Saturday the 30th I hit the lottery in gaining a new 99. A beautiful 99EG 250 Savage calibered rifle (51 DOB). Bought it from a forum member that was a joy to meet and talk with personally (and his wife). Made a 4 1/2 hour drive (one way) to see it and buy. Wood on it is sort of tiger striped in appearance and shimmers when ya move it back and forth in light. Metal and bluing top shelf. Plan is today to forget about list of things needed to be done, clean the bore (which is excellent), set up a target, and shoot!!!! Christmas and Birthday in October.!! grin grin I've never posted pictures here, will 'endeavor to persevere' in doing so, pics of it and my 99G and prewar R also. Well I'll probably not spend the whole day doing so. grin Saw my first perch belly 1899 250 Savage rifle also-beautiful rifle.

Sounds like you did good. And the wood on your gun is probably exemplary of standard “off the shelf” stuff back then.
